Ok. So a coworker of mine found out I'm pretty good at fixing up electronics, so he approached me regarding his 40GB PS3 which was no longer reading discs, and asked me if I could fix it. I had seen replacement Blu-ray drives available, so figured it should be fairly simple to order one and swap it out.
I decided to give it a try. So I held the power switch down until it turned on, and then off. I then tried holding the power switch on until I heard the double beep, but it just seemed to do the exact same thing as before.
Anyways, now, when I turn on the console, the light turns from green to red, but nothing happens. No video or audio plays. I've tried using HDMI, and the composite video cables, and neither make a difference. The unit appears to be completely bricked!
The only info I can give is if I hold the power switch from standby, I hear a single beep as the light turns green. 10 seconds later I hear another single beep. 10 seconds after that, it just shuts off.
or
If I turn on the unit, and hold the power switch, it will beep 3 times in a row, and then 10 seconds later it will shut off.
Any idea's? Also, I obviously voided the warranty opening the console, will Sony still fix the console at a cost?
If you opened it and its still under warranty then consider it void. Though you did open the PS3, Sony will be more than happy to fix it for you for a fee.
Sony put in a recovery mode similar to the recovery mode on psp's with cfw's so that if it does brick you can fix it. I don't remember the specifics of how it works but if it truly is bricked and not some other kind of hardware failure look into the PS3's recovery mode.

Actually no, if that seal is broken Sony won't touch it warranty or not.
