Back before christmas I was almost sure there was going to be a drop in march, but now that its almost here I'm kinda doubting it, likewise with april.

Sony is happy that they are finally almost making money off each console sold which is why they've been waiting at this price, they only achieved profit off each console sold recently and will likely want to maintain that so they will likely wait even longer so that when they do drop it they will still make money off each console sold. That's the way I'm seeing things atm.

If this was last year, I wouldn't believe that Sony would even consider a price cut. But now....it would be smart for Sony to consider dropping the price by $100, although I'm not sure if it would make a huge impact on sales. Mainly because they are competing with a crippled economy. I see US sales dropping across the board. The stimulus package just gives most an extra $15-$20/week in their paycheck. And that is pretty much eaten by the increase in gas, food and state taxes. I can see people who already own consoles investing in discounted games for entertainment, but I predict larger investments will be curbed. Those who are in debt now will probably be trying hard to get out now for fear of losing their job and not being able to pay their bills. The difference of $100 still might not be enough. I predict parents who want to invest in a video game system for their kids will still gravitate to the Wii and the stripped down 360.

Bottom line is, people who want to buy a PS3 are people who can afford it (as opposed to how it used to be, where people would buy it even though they couldn't afford it). For most now, it's all about the necessities. And if money is put aside for luxury items or entertainment, I think it will be the cheapest they can find. It's a choice between cheap gaming, or a multi-funtional, high performance entertainment machine with bluray capability. And if DVD quality is adequate, then I don't see people buying a PS3 just for the bluray capability.

That's my opinion. I'm really interested as to how all of this plays out.

Sony is run by an arrogant group who just because they have the best system always forget that that reason alone wont help the sale of the console. I'd like to see it happen just so that the ps3 catches the wii and xbox in terms of sales. I doubt it will ever happen

I'm guessing you didnt factor in what comes with the ps3 compared to what competitors offer when you made this statement.

@manny2564

Look stop being an idiot. This is why you are being idiotic.

a\ You are flaming. It's called keeping your opinions to yourself. I have my own positive and negative veiws about both the 360 and the Wii and but I don't go spouting the words "WII CRAP X360 RUBBISH PS3 FTW ASSHOLES!" all over the place (even though that is my personal all-round opinion but the Wii and 360 do both have a few perks TBH) because that will annoy people.

b\ Fair doos if this was a debate about the sales of consoles but it is not. It is a thread about wether or not the PS3 was going to go down in price.(IMO because of the recession)You just dragged the whole thread off topic.

Just thought I might try and nip this in the bud in case it turns into an all out flame war which would result in this threads closure.

And yes I do think the PS3 will drop in price again but not by much.

Thanks,
James.

PS. If anybody starts flaming uselessly I will call the cavalry and if the flaming is directed towards me I will call the cavalry and IGNORE YOU.

There's a very distinct difference between flaming and voicing your opinion. By telling him to keep his opinions to himself, you're insinuating that voicing an opinion and flaming are the same thing, when they're not. Honestly, I see nothing wrong with he said. It's an opinion. He said that Sony's run by "an arrogant group." That's an opinion. I fail to see where the "flame" comes in.

Again, not true. He is stating that the price drop likely won't happen because Sony's run by, again, "an arrogant group." He also added that he HOPES that the price drop DOES happen, but that he THINKS that it won't.

Opinion. I still fail to see how his opinion requires this much resistance.

...no offense, and I mean that seriously, but what makes you think that you have any sort of authority here? Trying to scare the members with threats that you will "call the cavalry and IGNORE YOU" is just... unnecessary.

That said, I can sort of understand why Sony SHOULD consider a price drop, if for no other reason than to compete with the others - the numbers just look better. But I think the problem goes far beyond that.

Their marketing scheme is horrendous. Taking a look at MS's marketing strategies, it's obvious that they want brand recognition to be a big deal. They've got the 360 stamped onto everything, sponsoring everything. Sony hasn't done anything NEARLY as expansive as that.

If anything, Sony should concentrate more on getting the name recognized than on lowering the price by anything. Buy exclusive game commercials. It's annoying to watch CoD5 TV spots, only to see the 360 logo pop up at the end when it's a multi-platform game. Sure, MS is whoring itself out in order to get that exclusivity, but it's one of the things that Sony has to contend with.

Truthfully, if Sony does anything, I'd probably say that it "whores itself out" to the more... higher-middle-class demographics. 'Cuz, y'know, it IS a machine that's going for the artsy, powerful, super-edgy look. Why not advertise itself to that demographic? It's too late to try and sponsor MTV specials when MS's already got a firm hold on it (not sure if they actually do, but y'know what I mean).

Anyway. What d'I know? I'm certainly not a business major or anything.

Sorry, that came out wrong. The words 'anybody starts' should've been replaced with 'manny2564' and looking back I do agree with you, he wasn't flaming, just voicing his opinion and yes I suppose I should've taken into account that there is nothing wrong with voicing his opinion. (freedom of speech and all that)

But I still stand by point b\ and IMO he is still an idiot. You have probably guessed is that I am a minor PS3 fanboy and these last 2 sentances are my opinion and there is nothing wrong with that.

-James

PS. Oh and how is the sentance "I will call the cavalry and IGNORE YOU" going to scare anyone? It was only meant to be a statement...

very highly unlikely they will be a price drop in the near time. there is just way too many exclusives heading to ps3 and that will generate a massive spike on sales. WHen you have the games to back up the product there is no reason to bring down the price, product will sell for itself. for example if you want to play killzone 2 then you pay 400 for the system. there is no way around it and most FPS fans are dying to get a hands on it, i donlt care if you are a pc gamer, wii gamer, xbox 360, ds, ps3, ps2 fan. KILLZONE 2 is just far and beyond anything out there for the violence hungry like me. lol. that game is just out of this world and the hype should last until we get something else like uncharted 2 or GOW 3.

Agreed.

After purchasing Killzone 2, I realized that if the PS3 did get a price drop Killzone 2 will sell more, and the more people know about Killzone, the more will buy the PS3.

I think a price drop will happen now but I reckon that the maximum drop will be £100 ($140 or something?)

I think I would finally give in to the calling of the PS3 if the price dropped by $100. But, I'm still trying to figure out what exactly the ps3 has that can compete with Netflix on the XBOX 360. Surely Sony will bring something similar to the table, but for now, it sure is nice to have a cheaper console with awesome games that you can watch (legally) unlimited movies on for $8.99 a month.

They can possibly beat 360 sales.

But I doubt the Wii sales.

It's obvious that the Wii has won the console war for sales.

I don't know. You would think that if someone was a die-hard FPS fan, they would have written off the PS3 and invested in a 360. Maybe I don't understand since I'm not a die-hard FPS fan - but would someone who owns a 360 really spend $400 + $60 + $$$ for whatever accessories just for the chance to play a couple of great FPS games?

A price drop would make the PS3 more attractive to the average person. And the number of new exclusives would probably sweeten the deal IMO. With new exclusives and no price drop, it's still the most expensive console. From a strictly gaming pov, a 360 would be more attractive to invest in if someone is just getting into the next gen gaming and deciding which console to buy. The 360 has a few good exclusives mixed in with all the multi-plats and is cheaper.

From a bluray player pov, it all comes down to how important bluray really is to the average person. They have to 1)have an HDTV; 2)want to spend more money on movies; 3)not be satisfied with upscaling; 4)not be interested in streaming. I think a $100 price drop would seem to solve all of those issues and push more consoles, regardless of whether it is for gaming or bluray. Someone trying to make a decision may be told that it's $100 more, but you get a bluray player.....but that someone may be on the fence as to whether or not they need one atm and if they want to part with $100. With the 360 base model offering next-gen gaming at a much lower price, it would be a no-brainer for someone on a budget.

That's true, but then if the salesperson knew anything else about the 360, he'd mention the fact that it has the highest failure rate of all the consoles.

Or, if even not that, then he should at least tell the consumer that the 360's DVD player is HORRIBLE. The PS3 does a tremendous job both playing and upscaling DVDs, which would be an even more enticing deal, even for folks who aren't very interested in Blu-Ray.

I've played DVDs on my PS3 (who hasn't?), and even I must admit that I don't get too many BDs simply because the PS3 does such a good job upscaling regular DVDs.

...and wow, I just realized how one-sided my post is. Oh, well. Just wanted to make sure everyone knows the 360's DVD player sucks.

when i look at a console, the first thing i look at is the controller layout, size, whieght, shape, wii has its motion remote type controller, 360 (no offense has a bulky, heaviness to it, and odd button layout and labbeling, bumber, trigger, cant be simple like ps3, L1,2 R1,2 and the thumbsticks are in odd posistions they shoudl always be on bottom, i like ps3 for its controller layout, fits nicely, and good layout and easy to rememebr buttons, also its rechargeable wihtout any addons, if i had to put it in order on which ones I THINK are best it would be
1: Wii (u get motion sensing, and interactive games that require motion, exausting after playing)
2: PS3 (bluray, high graphics, free internet, good controller layout, expensive)
3: 360 (high graphics, more variations, odd controller, $$$ internet)
thats jsut my OPINION
