You should definitely keep your drive defragmented. While that may or may not be causing your current problem, it is a good habit to have.

DVD Shrink is a resource hog. Methods that may help increase speed a bit...

1.) Free up space on your Hard Drive. Systems become slower the less free space they have.
2.) Defrag.
3.) Increase RAM.
4.) Increase Virtual Memory.

Yes, it will optimize those files for easier access. Your problems may be related to DMA issues though.

I 2nd all that has been said. You might also need to clean out your junk and registory. Your pc might actually running slower, but your not seeing much of the drag untell you use DvDShrink cause DvDShrink gobbles up time on the cpu clock. Theres no good way to kick it off and maintain a good encode either. Theres several free apps on this site that'll help you out. AWC, and ccleaner to name 2.
Do you ever go and delete the analize log file? I use to never clean it out. I then noticed that Shrink would code slow or act funny. I would delete the folder and it would straighten up.

Thank you, after doing that, my Secondary IDE Channel was set for PIO and that fixed it and it now runs much faster.

My other question remains, how do you delete the analize log file? And is that a necessary step?

Thanks for the help,

I have never cleaned out the log file on my system and I haven't had any issues. Not saying that it may not be a bad idea to do so, I just never found a reason.
