Actually, the blog sucked. I was happy to find this though, seems I wasnt nuts after all.
After having problems with my ps3 not loading/ recognising games or dvds I've spoken to several different repair shops,
it seems that this is a very common problem, the repair shop I've taken mine to has 12 other ps3's in the queue before mine,
all have the same problem of the reader not recognising disks.
Apparently it's a known problem by Sony and they have revised and redesigned the blu ray reader twice so far but the problem has not been fixed.
The servicemen I spoke to said the blu ray mechanism and the chip needs to be replaced but the only thing that they can be replaced with is the exact same (faulty) blue ray mechanism and chip (new obviously, but still a faulty product)
as any other mechanism will not fit or work in the ps3.
They also said they will charge me $300 (Australian) as the mechanism costs them $220 + the chip and labor,
Both people I spoke to said Sony will charge $315 + postage and Sony have a 6-8 week turnaround.
So here I am, I've spent $600 on the 40gb ps3 and now I have to spend another $300 to fix the damn thing, remembering my ps3 has only had 20-30 hrs use.
Sony should never have released the damn thing if they hadn't got it right, they should at least be willing to fix peoples ps3's free of charge since they know their blu ray BS is faulty.
Not impressed Sony.
As for the noise problems you talk about dave, I haven't experienced any, sounds like the bearing in the fan has gone, should be a relatively easy and cheap problem to have fixed.
(assuming you don't use Sony's technicians to repair it)
I suggest taking it to your local repair guy.
Wow, napabull, I almost considered taking the article seriously until I noticed that you started three freaking threads complaining about the same thing. As far as the actual blog goes, I'm with grkblood in thinking that it sucked. Unlike him, though, I don't have any issues with my PS3.
That said, I can understand being miffed because of some bad hardware and even worse customer service. It's gotta suck not getting what you bought and then having the guy you bought it from be pompous enough to say, "Well, that's too bad, but tough luck."
That's all it is, though. Tough luck. Very... VERY tough luck, but tough luck all the same.
...or at least that's my thought at the moment. I'll probably see it differently in the morning.
I just wanted to add that I emailed "Dave" about his awesome article and he responded within a few hours. Seems like a really cool dude, and disagree that the Blog "Sucked". It is ironic that the blog was posted a mere two weeks before I purchased my PS3. (DEC '07)
its a freakin' blog, and a crappy one at that, stop calling it an article. lol.
all that is mentioned in this is a personal experience, nothing technical. for what its worth this should actually be classified as an open journal entry.
Here is what I have personally learned from the "laser dying" experience. I have a launch 60 gig and about 2 weeks ago I put a disc in and it would not read it. It wouldn't read any discs at all. Not having a warranty I said screw it and opened it. I vacuumed the dust out of it and guess what, it works. I have a friend that has a dead 80 gig for about 3 months. I went to his house, opened up the PS3, did the same thing to his as I did mine, and guess what, it works now. I wonder how many of these so called dead PS3s are just dirty.
Also replacing the diode is not hard if you have any electronics experience. haxnetwork.net (formally ps3hax.net) has a tutorial on how to do it yourself.
