Playback Issue After DVD Shrink Rip

I am using DVDShrink to backup dvd's to .vob format. Once that finishes, I use the command line to copy multiple .vob files into one larger .avi file.
Playback works fine in Windows Media Player, but for some reason the progress bar is never correct. Most recent rip left me with the progress bar saying it was a 6 second movie. Now if I click the WMP progress bar anywhere, it will take me to that part of the movie (in the middle takes me to the middle, last third = last third, etc). It just doesn't have the time value correct.
While not a pending doom issue, it is a major annoyance for someone who once spent an entire weekend renaming ~10,000 mp3 files just so they were all the same.
Thanks!

I?m not quite sure about ?I use the command line to copy multiple .vob files into one larger .avi file? and your intention.
Though it might work, if you let DVD Shrink not to split VOB files.
(DVD Shrink, Edit>Preferences, Output files tab, uncheck ?Split VOB files into 1GB size chunks?.)

I'm probably grossly misinterpreting the effects of the command line syntax I'm using, but anyway...here it is.
I was using DVDFab trial to rip video_ts folder to hard drive. Then using command line (in the proper directory) syntax "copy /b 1.vob + 2.vob + 3.vob...etc... 5.vob "new movie".avi" and that was giving me an avi file.
When opening those avi files though the progress bar in windows media player would say the file was either 0 or 6 seconds long. In that event, the progress bar of the file would move all the way to the right of the screen either instantly or in 6 seconds, while the movie continued to play.

Try using DVDFab for simply ripping your files to your HDD and then do as rtm and creaky both suggested and use AutoGK for converting to .avi. A link to t guide has already been posted graciously by rtm27 above.

No it wasn't.

Indeed. I'm au fait with concatenating files together that way in Linux, but don't see how it could work with (non-text) files in the Windows world.
As to the progress bar in Windows Media Player (apart from the fact i try not to use the bloated DRM-fest that is Windows Media Player), i do use Windows Media Player Classic (no bloat there!) and sometimes i do get the same problems with some DVD movie files and AVI files. I don't worry about it though so have never bothered researching it. The files always play ok, it's just the progress bar that goes screwy. I hardly play media in Windows anyway, i much prefer to watch movies on my old xboxes using the awesome XBMC.

Yeah I wasn't sure how that would be working either, never heard of it before.

Before I get anymore ostracized, note that I stated I was likely misinterpreting what was going on. Never the less, when the rip is complete I have a .vob file that won't play in windows media player. Upon changing the extension to .avi, it plays fine. It certainly piques my interest as to what is going on, but I never meant to offer an explanation.

No harm meant, i just don't think i've ever used the /b switch for the copy command in Windows, and have been using *nix for donkeys years since then.
What i did omit from my last reply was that any movie files (even standard VOB files) that have incorrect progress time in Media Player Classic always have a proper progress time in VLC player, though as i say i have no idea why it does this.

Changing the extension to .mpg would make more sense. That said every media player I have (except WMP11), Nero Showtime, VLC, MPC and Jet audio will properly play a VOB. They will scan and the time is shown correctly.
