I have had DVD XCopy for a while now. I was reading and saw alot of folks recommending DVD Shrink so I downloaded it in hopes to replace XCopy. Well for some reason no matter what I do the it will not encode the movie. Everything works fine until I hit back up movie. It will start encoding and it will do the menu but when it comes to the main movie, it freezes and say program not responding. I have uninstalled Xcopy and everything and it still doesn't work. I have tried to install the older and the latest versions of DVD Shrink and they all fail. Also when it analizes the movie it takes only 45 seconds vs the 15-20 mins that the guide says. Please help me because I want to convert to Shrink and I don't understand what I am doing wrong. If I can't work then its back to 321.

BigChief1,
It SHOULD be, 15 to 20 minute?s time is what it takes a modern computer to "Backup" a DVD. The 45 seconds to 1-1/2 minutes is the time to analyze your DVD :-)
The "encode" time does seem to be way out of line. Lol
Your "freeze" sounds like a resource problem :-( When ripping and burning - be aware that these programs require just about the max resources your system has - If you attempt to operate your PC for any task while you are ripping you can expect that you'll experience that sort of problem -
That also means that programs running behind the scenes can affect the ripping and burning too.
Time to head into msconfig and shut everything down to start with, reboot your system and then begin using DVD Shrink and Nero. You'll find out in time what you can have running and what you cannot. One program that doesn't play with other kids is Roxio Easy CD Creator - as a rule, it needs to go "Bye, Bye".
To help you individually, we'll need your PC's specs and what software you have -
One last bit of advise, start using top of the line media - Verbatim or Ritek G04 or any media advertising metal AZO dye are what's required for DVD Backups.
Anywho, Welcome to our little Club :D)

Also if you are using XP hit CTRL ALT DEL and shut down any programs running in the background...the system wont let you close any stuff that will screw the system up so it's failsafe. You'd be surprised what crap is running in the background taking up resources. Also run ad-aware etc regularly to remove spyware stuff that will slow the hell out of your PC.

Hi BigChief, Here's something esle to check for better operation. Your Main HD should be on the primary IDE Master position. Your Burner drive should be on the secondary IDE also as Master. Also set ALL drives to DMA mode in device manager. This will help get the process speed right.

Hi guys,
So what else could it be? Its odd that it waits until the menu has encoded before crashing. Menus are not always encrypted so when the encrypted portion comes along....crash.
It would be great to know how much RAM he has but if it is failing with the less RAM/CPU intensive earlier versions and not failing with Xcopy, then his system resources are probably OK. Shrink also has the "low priority" mode. Maybe that would solve any resource issues.
So I'd tell him to use Decrypter first and get the files on to the hard drive and then use Shrink in the low priority mode. That would reduce system resource requirements quite a bit. That should eliminate the source disc as the problem as well.
I hope he has tried more than one movie.
Well thats my 2 cents worth, I hope he comes back with his system info!
Cheers,
Frank

I uninstalled Roxio CD creator and it still freezes. I have backed up over 200 movies with 321 and I like the DVD Shrink better. I have always used Ritek G03 or G04. I have just installed SpyKiller and HistoryKill a short while before I installed Shrink. Could they interfere? I am seriously thinking about reformatting my C drive. I don't know. I got Shrink to burn one copy and now it won't work for nothing. I don't know what I am doing wrong.

You might want to disable any packet writing programs or compleatly uninstall them ,because disableing them is not enough they always seem to run in the background just be sure you back up anything first to a disc BEFORE you uninstall then reboot a couple of times to make sure it's out of the reg. then I would do a clean re-install of DVD Shrink . I had the same thing happen to me when I had installed my SONY software for my DVD-R drive and now since I've done everything I told you I get perfect burns everytime. One other thing you might want to disable your anti-virus while your trying to rip a movie,I've got DSL & I shut my modem off then disable my (Norton 2004 systems works ) after my burnning sesion is done I turn it back on & I've got 1 gig of ram sure hope this helps you like it did me.

BigChief1,
No need ta get scared (I would if I just read all that and knew that it pertained to me). By shutting everything down in msconfig, we're giving the programs the max of resources. What I'd like you to do now is uninstall DVD shrink and Nero, reboot (It clears it out) - install DVD Shrink, reboot (it gets it settled), then install Nero, reboot NOW - lets backup a DVD :P)

I have a freeze problem too but I think mine is a read problem. The DVD I am trying to backup has been compressed about 50% and I get a error problem after a freeze for some time. (Its actually 7,6GB of info on the disk) Have I the same problem or different. I put mine down to a read error because of the compression. Shrink does not like it and also smart ripper 2.41 is the same. I thought if I slowed down the read speed it may have a chance.

BigChief1,
I've just re-read this thread and we really need to go back to the beginning -
We need to get your PC's specs -
What software are you running ?
Is everything up-to-date ?
Firmware ?
O/S Updates ?
DVD Shrink Version ?
Let's hear from you -

We need to get your PC's specs -
Gateway Pentium 4 with 80gb harddrive.
What software are you running ? PC Friendly, WINDVD, XCOPY Express, XCOPY GOLD, History Kill, Spy Killer, Nero,Norton Antivirus.
Is everything up-to-date ? Yes
Firmware ? None
O/S Updates ? No, my machine is less than a year old.
DVD Shrink Version ? Tried 3.16 and 3.17, both fail.
Let's hear from you - I used DVD Shrink and burned one complete movie and it worked fine but after that it freezes right after the extras are encoded or it will encode all the way up to 98% and freeze. I have installed and uninstalled most of all my progrms and still get nothing so I am back to XCopy right now.

BigChief1,
I understand, - the first burn was good - additional burns haven't been so good - You've never gotten to the burn stage with Nero - it craps out during Shrink's encoding -
Have you tried processing a DVD with programs in the background shut down using msconfig ??
I'd like you to try it, - we want to make available all of your system's resources available for it to use :-) (Wish I had some idea of your PC's resources and processor speed)
Anyway, let's see what happens there - We just want to backup to the HD for now (get a working folder there).
I'd like you to shut Norton off for a try also - again, we just want to backup to the HD :P)
Pete
I'm glad DVD XCopy is working, you have the following programs running that are on XCopy's "Black List", they are PC Friendly, WINDVD and Norton.
Here is their List - http://dvdxcopy.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/49908

OK. Well gents I have solved the problem. I have reformatted my hard drive. Erased everything and started over. DVD Shrink works like a charm. No problems. I have burned three movies crystal clear. I don't know but I guess one of the programs I was using was interfering with Shrink. To all those who don't want to believe, SHRINK IS WAY BETTER THAN XCOPY!! and its really not as hard to use as people say. For it to be free, you can't lose. The whole movie on one disk with out the silly 321 disclaimer at the beginning. I always reformat every couple of months but I just need to watch what I download. Thanks to all that posted to try and help me.
