1) enable DMA for your drives
2) see if there's a firmware update for your burner
3) you're burning at 16x, this may be too fast for the media your using, try 8X

Hi,

thank you for the responses, first off, I have tried enabling DMA on the drives as advised and have attempted to follow the instructions given but when I open up 'IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers' in Device Manager I do not have an oprion given to me for Primary IDE Channel, the only two options I have listed are NVIDIA nForce3 250 Parallel ATA Controller (v2.6) and NVIDIA nForce3 250 Serial ATA Controller (v2.6).

I am sure I have changed the DMA setting prior to this though through a different route as my buffer levels were staying around the 4% mark.

The firmware is up to date on both the burners, I ma however using Nero 6.0023 as when I have tried using a newer version of Nero I always had compatibility issues with DVD Shrink, I was under the presumption only Nero 6 and older would work with DVD Shrink, if this is not the case could somebody advise me on the versions of Shrink and Nero I should have installed for the best performance? I am using DVD Shrink 3.2.

The media I have is 16x, have burnt before at 16x without a hitch it just seems to have happened overnight??

nero 6.6.0.18 is the best version of nero 6. nero 6 and 7 work well with dvd shrink . nero 8 doesn't support dvd shrink however you can still use nero 8 with dvd shrink as long as you don't autoburn

try uninstalling the drives then reboot that should get you back into DMA

8x is always you're best burning speed

looks like you are use Verbatim ? some are MIT or MIS which are the best ones and the MII can have problems. blank media can vary batch to batch

I am using Titanium 16x 4.7gb DVD-R discs. Tried changing the settings to a lower burning speed and it will only burn about 10% of the DVD before failing. Acyually, it looked like it had burned 10% by looking at the DVD but Shrink would not get off the initialising stage at the beginnning?

Dont know if i really want to alter the DMA settings on the drives as the buffer level was running very low and burning took an age to do prior to this.

1. you aren't altering the DMA setting since you aren't even in DMA mode. burning in PIO taxes the hell out of you're system so you have to be in DMA mode, thats why the buffer level was running very low 2. you need to use better blank media like Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim BURNING AT 8X MAX. IF YOU DON'T WANT TO LISTEN TO US DON'T POST QUESTIONS! 3. sounds like you may have a bad or going bad optical drive in which case you will need to replace it. another problem could be you have a old/inexpensive system/PC and thats causing you problems? better software may help also like using dvdfab or clonedvd & anydvd consider that

I?ve read somewhere before that Nero can?t see DMA setting correctly though nVidia driver. (I assume that nVidia driver is used because of IDE controller chip is on the motherboard.)

Is it OK to replace with atapi.sys (windows driver)?
If so, how to do it? (Uninstalling driver and restarting system might reinstall the nVidia driver?)

This might have been discussed, though I couldn?t pick up by searching

@Rossot

Though Device Manager, when you open the property window of ?NVIDIA nForce3 250 Parallel ATA Controller (v2.6)?, do you see setting or status of DMA somewhere?

Try ImgBurn as many here suggested to make sure this is not a Nero issue.

1) Your drives really need to be set to operate in DMA mode for optimal performance, try what ZoSoIV suggested:

Quote:

Quote:

This is happening because you're drives aren't utilizing DMA.

2) Your drive's firmware

Quote:
The firmware is up to date on both the burners
It's not the latest on the drive that matters as shown in the log:
Recorder: <ATAPI DVD A DH20A4H> Version: QP53

The lite-on site show the current version to be QP5B, here's the link to get it http://www.liteonit.com/DOWNLOADS/ODD/DH-20A4H/firmware/QP5B.rar

The update offers additional media compatibility which may help since the log shows that the recorder isn't recognizing the disks you're using as shown here..

Poor quality media can be very inconsistent. I don't know if you've been using this stuff for a while or if it's new, but it can be hit or miss with low quality media.
