Hi
i just got dvd shrink. Ive been trying to copy dvds but the process seems to take FOREVER. I use an optorite dd0203 dvdrewriter to read the discs at 12x speed. The deep analysis takes 20 HOURS and then the encoding takes around 23 HOURS. Please can someone tell me how to speed up the process or whats happening for it to take so long.

Christ!
First of all, what is the spec of your pc? Nothing should ever take that long to do. What process's is your computer using whilst it is reading from Shrink?
I would guess either your DVD writer is knackered or there is something majorly afoot with your PC.
Could you give us more info please?

Persistent fellow! I would've cancelled the process after an hour.
Sounds like DMA not being enabled might be a possibility as well.

I second that, WOW. Even with the slowest burner on earth I'm thinking maybe 3 hrs tops. Here are a couple of things to start checking while you give us your system specs. Your Main HD should already be on the primary IDE chain as MASTER. The BURNER drive should be on the secondary IDE chain as MASTER. Check in the device manager that all drives are set to DMA not PIO mode. Shut down all programs running in the backgroung like anti virus and anything thing else. DO NOT MULTI-TASK while backing up dvds. Lets start with this and see if we can get you running faster.

Don't forget to dim the lights, light a couple candles and chant to the burning gods.

Just for giggles I once tried a disc on my old laptop. P233, 128 MB RAM. It only took 6 hours.

I personally use RecordNow. My version was made by Stomp, but now it is made by Veritas.
Not that I have a problem with Nero. Just that I started using RecordNow and it hasn't let me down yet.
I used to be a Roxio fan. Until I started trying to use version 5 with Windows XP. What a nightmare!

Well I have Roxio 6.0 installed and I like for certain things however I was told if you install both Roxio and Nero conflicts arise. When we mention Nero I was told Nero express is the desired choise rather than the main program Nero.

No , quite the reverse ... you want to use Nero Burning Rom part of package for burning DVD-Video : )
Nero might well conflict w/ certain other writing software , uninstall everything (completely) & then install Nero as first burning app & you should be okay.
Nero 6 Ultra Edition is the package I would suggest getting btw...

I have a PENTIUM III - 500MHZ with 256Megs of memory and a 120GB harddrive and the average time to decrypt and compress is about 1 hr and 40 minutes to copy the data to the harddrive and another 15 minutes to copy it to a blank DVD. My suggestion is to break the process into two steps. Copy it to the harddrive first and then use a program to copy it to a blank DVD. To me, 6hrs is insane. Unless, I am wrong you are using DEEP ANALYSIS. Do not do this except in extreme cases. Once you do the open disc, and DVDSHRINK uses the quick analysis make your selections and hit backup instead of deep analysis. This might be your problem.

I also have a pentium III 500mz computer and a computer tech told me that I can't copy DVD's with my system, too slow. Is that correct? I would use DVD Shrink and Nero 6.o. Can someone tell me if thats true.

herbsman,
I don't know if I can go along with your feelings that Nero is the odd man out - Roxio seems in my opinion to be the fly in the ointment. Nero gets along with most everyone -
gbc410,
You are on the low end of the scale with your 500mz but you're certainly not out of the picture - it will just take you a little longer to process your work - :D)
Have at it, I say :P)

I have no problems on a AMD900 / 256k SD-Ram / 120Gb HDD...
You will probably notice time difference (ie; taking longer than other ppl) is when you come to use a compression agent.
As Pete quite rightly said 'Have at it , I'd say'

I've not had any problems w/ Nero conflicting with ANY thing myself , other writing software I have had or still do...RecordNow/IMGtool/DVD Decrypter/TMPGEnc DVD Author/DVD Architect etc etc !!: )-~
As to Roxio , I have never tried it ... but have read reports for years on how utterly crap it is ;]

As I stated in a previous post, I have a PENTIUM III - 500MHZ with 256Megs of memory and a 120GB harddrive. I have had absolutely no problems with backing up DVDs. I have even run two instances of DVDSHRINK at the same time with no problem at all.

One thing that slows the process is the drive has gone into PIO mode.
Go to
1. My Computer
2. Control Panel
3. System
4. Hardware
5. Device Manager
6. IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers
7. Open the installed IDE channels (Primary and Secondary)
8. Click on Advanced settings
9. You will see the transfer mode. If any are PIO you need to un-install the channel (right click and choose uninstall) and re-boot. Windows will reinstall the device and return it to DMA mode.
10. Be careful when using this procedure because if you have an older hard drive or storage device that does not support DMA you could corrupt your data.

After about an hour my encoding process went from 20hours to 4 hours. This is still long, but i guess its because i have a slow, P3 128MB RAM, 500MHZ computer.
Im buying a new computer next week anyway, so i shouldnt have any prolems with DVD Shrink anymore. Thanks for your help anyway guys.

If you have "Rox**" installed on your system here are the steps
1. Format your computer
2. Cancel your internet connection
3. Die
