ps2 controller slice and dice for ps3

So, I've been reading online about these adapters that can make a ps2 controller work on the ps3, but I'm a little confused. Why couldn't you just cut off the end of the ps2 controller and wire it to a usb plug? Worked on the old xbox controllers when using them with a pc. I've got extra usb cables and could get a cheap ps2 controller, so I was thinking about doing it. anybody tried it yet?

the ps2 controller does not have a ps menu button. rather, it only has an emblem. im sure it could be changed but that is the main problem.

Well, I guess my main concern is that I want to have a second controller for when friends come over, so as long as somebody is using a regular ps3 controller, that shouldn't be a problem. Also, just for the sake of hacking, could I rig up a home button?
