Slow Bit Torrent downloads? Router configuration tips.

Here's a new one.
I've been using AZ 2.5.0.4 successfully for a long time - blazing speeds, so on and so forth.
Lately, though, I will get blazing speeds, then NOTHING. Smilies stay green, NAT stays green, I will show (in the "Seeds" and "Peers" columns) that I am connected to others (for example, "12(1232)" in "Seeds" and "8(544)" in Peers) while downloading, but 0 down and 0 up.
It will stay like that for a while, kick back in with a good speed, then kick back down to zero for a while.
NAT/Firewall Test... OK!
Any thoughts?

hi everyone.. i am using wireless network connection adapter which share network from a router. I did't hold the router. So how would i confi the router port? can know all the port number code and make adjustment so that my uTorrent need it. Have you all feedback please. Thanks.

im using utorrent
iv done the ports. no firewall.
iv connected wireless router to adsl router via ethernet wire.
iv put the ports in the wireless settings, do i have to do it on the adsl router aswell
btw. the speed is the same as ever.

pleas!!!!!!!!!! some one help donk care who but i am trying to speed up my bittorrent downloads! but i am using a publick wifi i have a good conection. i have tryd various aceleraters but they all say that i dont have a bittorent program installed! i am using bittorrent 6.0! pleas help!!!!!!!! my e-mail is korny641@hotmail.com

I'm not sure how much this has been said in this thread because its so massive that I can't read it all, but I would suggest to most people that their issue, unless you cannot connect, is the fact that you are using a public torrent. Public torrents tend to have more leechers because once they are done downloading they leave or they limit their uplaod. Private trackers require their users to maintain a high ratio (same upload amount as download amount)or they boot them off the site. As a result, there are more seeders than leechers.
Private trackers are very hard to get into but they do open up sometimes. I had the same issue. I was dowloading between 2 to 10k/sec on public then I went private and depending on the number of seeders, I'm generally between 200k and 1mb/sec.
If your port forwarded properly and you firewall has exceptions or is off, then i'm willing to bet this is your issue.

is it bad to have more then 10 ports open? Because i think i have about 400 open.I dont know if thats bad or good so can somebody help me

You only need one port open for clients like utorrent, Azureus, etc. Others like BitTornado use a range but more than one download open at a time only means each will have to share bandwidth.

thanks alot misty.i have another question tho.my max downloading speed is around 250kb.is there any way i can make that faster or is that as good as it gets?

That's a pretty good speed. Do a speedtest at various times to get a good average and set your upload speed in your client to about 80% of that. Keep in mind that most speedtests show in kb (bits) and most clients use kB (bytes), 8 kb = 1 kB, port forward a router and some modems, set your client as an exception in any firewall, disable UPnP if your client supports it.

Slow Torrent speeds
I've been digging around for information about this problem for a few weeks now.
All the other bases seem to be covered on this subject..Only one isn't, namely your service provider, and I came across it purely by accident, here's the link..

Now then .. I'm no expert in these matters, but I'm from an engineering background (hardware mainly) but I found the information on this site really usefull.
Firstly I'm using utorrent client which is very popular and apparantly almost the same as Bit- torrent.
My service provider used to be NTL and I had no problems using utorrent, just recently Virgin took over NTL's ADSL service (not cable) and I did get a better broadband connection speed. However my torrent download speed after a few days took a dive to about 10 Kb/sec and I had been getting about 60Kb/ sec before.
I tried loads of stuff to improve things then I read the article on isp's on the link above...

Hey presto, it worked for me, I set my port on the router and my torrent client to 10100 and set it to encrypt the data, no problems since.
Naughty ol Virgin huhh... but I'll bet there are other ISP's out there who are doing the same thing to try and "throttle" the bandwith we should all be enjoying.
I hope the link above helps some of you get to grips with this problem most of the other "tweaks" are well covered in this forum.

dude i changedall my ports but speed hasnt increased,m using bitdownloader..also the steps u said about typin ip address were not workin...whereas my network cinfigration step was success..help

I am not sure which post you are referring to, but if you are looking for a port forwarding guide for your router check PortForward.com Router Index.
Choose your router make and model and the program you are looking to clear and it will give you a good guide for forwarding that app through your router.

thank u mistycat! i think i've forwared my port. it means my bittorent icon changed to green. is this the identification? but my download is still low. not more than 2kb/sec. should i make changes in settings of bit torrent. is there any other way to speed up bit? and what is the meaning some times icon changes to red. please give me hand!

If green, you're set. A low download speed can depend on many factors; my speeds can range from 5 kb to hundreds and that's on private sites. It can depend on amount of seeds and peers you're connected to, how much you've downloaded compared to peers you're connected to, disabling UPnP, private versus public sites, setting your upload rate to 80% (kb are not kB, 8 kb = 1 kB) and more, give it at least 1/2 hour. I don't know if Bittorrent supports Protocol Encryption (only Azureus, utorrent and BitComet do that I know of) but enable it if you can. I'm not sure on the icon turning red, may need a static ip address or your ISP may be causing it.

ok mr.mistycat, belive me, i left it free for 2days with green icon, but it still stay with 0.1 to 2kb/sec. i agree with u. i use this bittorrent client for a year, i went up to 152kb/sec some times, but recently, my system been formated because of virus, after installing bittorrent now, it gets this problem, i need is
seeding shows 0, peers changes frequently ... and uploading goes 52kb/sec and so on. but download is 0.
q1. seeding is depending upon torrent file or it'll change according to the setting of bit clients?
q2. upload goes 50kb, why no download?
q3. if there is any other problem with setting of bittorrent in my computer, seeding would be 0?
q4. please one good way to get max. download?

It almost sounds as if you're being throttled, what ISP? Don't use a port under 10,000. If these files have never completed, there will be no seeds or if you have as much of the file as peers you're connected to, download may be nonexistant but you should still be connected to some seeds. Raising Global connections may help but could affect surfing to. I would almost say to try utorrent with Protocol Encryption: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/395674 I haven't used it but Open Office 2.41 should let you check things with either client. I just checked and there are plenty of seeds, just let it run awhile: http://distribution.openoffice.org/p2p/ (not 2.41 irc).

Good and use Peer Guardian when downloading or seeding: http://phoenixlabs.org/pg2/ Not 100% but best there is, if Vista, utorrent has ip blocker but I've not used it: http://www.teckh.com/?p=87 Keep randomize port at options>preferences>connection unchecked with a router port forwarded.

I have been using utorrent and rather than go to the trouble of port forwarding, i just unhook my router and go straight to the pc. As i only use the router when i work on someone's elses computer. I get uploads at 60kbs and downloads at around 100 kbs. Is there someting i should do or watch for, i also use peer guardian. I have a 7to 1 ratio right now on public sites, can't seem to get a private one open for sign up.

That's fine, some modems have firewalls and need forwarding too but as long as port check in utorrent is green, you're good to go. Something to keep in mind is that public sites allow DHT, private sites don't and also set your upload properly for best download speeds.
