C&D letter sent to Engadget over alleged 'Slim PS3' pics

article published on 19 May, 2009

According to a post over at Engadget, the site has received a cease and desist letter over pictures of the alleged 'Slim PS3' that show the console with a heavily redesigned body that is completely slim-lined. The move gives the pictures more credibility, but we will not know officially until Sony stops denying. The message says: Dear Sir, We just find that the following web pages ... [ read the full article ]

who really cares its a <edited> picture of what might be on display if its not the new design who cares if it is then try and get reactions now before u get bad pub, and fix the problem it isnt rocket science here or are ppl getting dumber and more confused. Kinda like the boomerang ps3 controllers that almost came out. Sony use some sense and get with it please and worry about helping developers work around ur console which is running last in console sales do to the pricetag and come up with something. Sorry first post is me being frustrated with things that seem stupid or rather small when Sony has alot more <edited>to worry about

People in the market for a PS3 might see these pics and decide they might as well wait for the new one. this leads to less consoles being sold.

Morreale obviously their pushing a new ps3 so of course ppl are knowing its going to be different tho by the looks of it i'd buy one now cuz if thats the new model i'd say it looks funny to me compared to the old one so i'd think they'd sell more now then after but thats my opinion on the subject.

It's standard business practice to send a C&D letter when 'leaked' photos appear. I don't see what's so newsworthy about this, besides of course creating another 'news' where the anti-Sony boys can come in and mindlesly bash the company. That seems to be a popular sport around here.

Clueless? It is you sir who is clueless. Deliberately employing techniques used by viruses and in turn opening a backdoor to allow other real viruses to propagate is inexcusable. Sony deserves to burn.

about as on topic as this..

anti-consumer malware spreaders deserve the scorn of the buying public.. as the current crappy.. err.. sorry.. $ony sales figures show.

just because they are huge doesn't guarantee anything in a global recession.. the bigger they are the harder they fall.. ask the banks.

Ehh, being huge actually does guarantee something... especially in the banking industry. The bigger you are the higher your chances of being supported by the government/taxpayers if you make a series of idiotic moves that destroy your company.

For those that made reference to the backdoor security issues that Sony employed on a CD, I'd like to point out that I'm perfectly aware of this and I do not condone their actions. In that particular matter, Sony was in the wrong and deserved to be sued by consumer organizations for this.

However, this is an entirely different topic. A company has the right to protect it's R&D secrets and reveal them when they think is the opportune moment. Leaking early pictures of R&D could hamper their marketing strategy and as such, they are perfectly in their right to send a C&D letter to site owners.

I am not a Sony-fanboy nor am I a person who bears blind hatred towards them. I am just looking at what is the fair thing to do and in this case, I don't see any problem with them asking to remove said pictures.

Moreover, I would like to point out to all of you who hope that Sony crashes and burns that the demise of such a company would have dire consequences for a lot of regular Joe's:
- massive loss of jobs (everyone working at Sony would be jobless, effective immediattely)
- many consumers would be left hanging with no aftersales care, as the company would no longer exist. Say what you will, but having aftersales care is important to consumers who buy their products

As such, I find the remarks on this site about hoping that Sony would go bankrupt very short-sighted, selfish and borderline immature.

Like I said, it seems to be good sport on this site to bash Sony at the drop of a leaf. In some cases, people are right to attack them (the copy-protect issue), but in many cases, it is the sole result of blind, illogical hatred that basically has no reason to be.

News trumpishs petty R&D/PR worries.

AS for goign bankrupt it would be nice if one of these mega companies did go under from all the ill they do but they manage to do just enough good to stay in profit, in the end the only way one of them will go under is via heavy neglect from the top or a very bad world economy.

Very well put kyo28! :)

Plenty of people have a number of different consoles, wii, xbox and ps2 or 3 in their houses and are quite happy to play whatever they want without having to get into all this rubbish and fanboyism about which is better.

And at the end of the day people vote with their money, if people don't like sony they don't have to buy their products. Absolutely no need to rant on and on about how awful they are.

Seems to me some people just like trying to cause trouble.

Most car manufacturers have had pics taken of their new buggies and theres no chew there. So whats the prob here then? Freedom of speech should be allowed. And if you cant keep your secret "secret" then dont complain when it hits the net!!!!!!! Case closed, judge joe to the rescue. Lol
And with ref to the sub topic, I personally hope that some day 1 of these big players will go down and I hope it is sony. There I said it. ROFL.

Yes we the appeal judges agree with judge joe. Freedom of speech is everyones right.:P

Haha. "children" fighting about gaming consoles. Just play the console of your choice and keep it at that. Nobody really cares to hear about your opinions on why you think a certain company sucks and its console.

Sony made some high quality products back in the day a real stark comparison to what they make now. some of the best stuff they made was early 80's early 90's. in Y2K they started going down hill like a roller coaster of bad business practice. there last great product was the PS2.

come to think of it its the same year MS,Creative,Apple and Magnavox started on the same roller coaster ride. What happened there i wonder,Mmm.

what a great bit of free advertising for sony, release info that spreads like wildfire, deny it to stir up more interest and low & behold you have just gotten $10,000,000 of free advertising.

if the slim model is a better unit & enables sony to drop the price it's good news but sony do deserve to burn for their "%/&$ the consumers" business strategies.

thats before you even think about their controlling hand in the MPAA & RIAA & the DRM that them make which infests many a unit.

I'm all in favor of freedom of speech but it doesn't apply to patent rights, which is the law that prevails in this case. A company has the right to decide when and which information gets divulged.

Judging by the pictures, it's clear these were leaked from a Chinese parts factory (given the Chinese text on them). I wouldn't be surprised if some magazine or website offered that employee cash for the scoop. However, this still means that Sony has the right to ask them to take these down.

As for the car manufacturers, it's all a matter of marketing. Rest assured that if pictures are given out to the press of a new car, it's because the marketing department of said company thought it was the opportune moment to release them to maximize sales.

Don't they teach law and economics in high school anymore? When reading some posts here, I'm starting to doubt it.
