Hi all. SO I have been reading some threads on this topic, and have a few questions. I just got a PS3 - SWEET!

Background:
- PS3 connected to LCD 1080p (47") with HDMI cable. TV audio out connected to Home Theatre System with optical cable.
- I have a 500 GB external HDD available, and an 8 GB USB thumbdrive.
- Wireless and/or wired router availble

Q1 - If I connect a USB HDD, it has to be FAT32 (or a partition thereof): True or False?
Q2 - If I connect via CAT5 on my ROUTER (or just use wireless), I will be able to access my PC to stream movies. True or False
Q3 - If the above 2 are false, how can I watch a downloaded blue-ray movie on my PS3 withOUT burning it to blue-ray discs?
Q4 - I can watch movies from a USB thumb drive (8 GB), in DVD or AVI format. True or false.
Q5 - What about watching HD content on my thumb drive?

Thanks everyone. This system is very sweet and sometimes overwhelming with all the possibilities.

Q1: Yes it has to be FAT or partioned FAT.
Q2: Yes, true.
Q3: For streaming HD content, being hard wired is a must,(depending on your surroudings how far from the router your PS3 is wireless may do, but you might have stuttering video etc), also having the correct codecs on your PC is needed.
Q4: True, providing the video and audio streams contained within the AVI is compatible. DVD files will play without trouble.
Q5: So long as you have enough space to hold the file, and the video and audio is compatible with PS3 you,ll have no trouble.

Hey, just to clarify Q3 a little more...

What hardware/software is required? DO I actually need to "play" them on my PC and view on the tv, or...not quite sure I understand. Thanks for all your answers!!

Re: Q3

Although Q1 and Q2 are OK you may want to look into these solutions for Blu-ray content (rips and d'loads). This is how I view most of my BD content, I also have a BD drive and I rarely deal with downloads anymore. The good thing about AVCHD format on a PS3, via an external HDD is you are not restricted to certain codecs, anything that a BD is encoded with will play in this format from an external.

multiAVCHD - Good for creating menu organized HD content for external HDDs.

AVCHD Manager - Works alone or in conjunction with multiAVCHD outputs. Great for managing multiple AVCHD folders on one external HDD.

tsMuxeR - Great for preparing M2TS files for PS3 compatibility. Pretty much all MKVs can be remuxed (converted) using this app. multiAVCHD uses this app "behind the scenes" while it is going it's thing.

Congrats on the PS3, you will not be disappointed.
