Have you tried manually setting the output to hdmi @ 720p? I just checked and your monitor is hdcp so there's no reason why it shouldn't work.

I would start with what canuckerz said. Manually put your PS3 @ 720p then connect it to the 940bw. If it still doesn't work then it must be the cable you are using because I have my 2nd PS3 on my 226bw connected via a HDMI to DVI cable.

I'm running my ps3 on a computer monitor atm, there's nothing not to beleive. Its the exact same thing as a lcd tv without the tuner and all that extra stuff not needed for a gaming display. I checked a few more sites and they all say its hdcp. I'd say try another cable.
EDIT: I think I know the problem, your monitor has 2 inputs, vga and dvi. Check to see which one the monitor is set to atm.

LOL, you quoted me telling you I currently do the same with my other PS3! It works on mine and Canucks, but he does have a good question...are you sure you selected the correct input? This is from the guide for your monitor ~

If you selected the correct input and had it setup prior to connecting then it has to be the HDMI -> DVI cable. Does your TV have a DVI connection so you can test it on that?

So to review you have tried ~
1) Leaving the PS3 connected to your HDTV @ 720p on an HDMI input to then
2) Connect it to the Monitor using the HDMI to DVI cable
3) Changed the inputs on the monitor to correctly select signal
4) Also tried holding down the power on button to do a force reset on PS3
So we know the PS3 works, HDMI works and the Monitor works (for VGA but not confirmed for DVI) as of right now so I think it is safe to say it is the HDMI to DVI cable you got from china.

I was just reviewing what you already tried since you said your Sony has an HDMI input
Quote: it works with my sony tv hdmi to hdmi so i did what u asked of n then went to display options and set it to 720p, then with the ps3 still on i take the cable out put my dvi 1 in n nothing shows on the monitor?
Because using the HDMI output to the Sony then swapping cables to the HDMI-DVI and connecting it to the monitor on the correct input would absolutely work...basically confirming the Chinese cable is your problem from what it seems.
