I am pretty new to using dvd shrink, and im using it to back up the kids dvd's. Ive reauthored and burned copies fine, but im concerned about the quality of the backup copy. In dvd shrink - the green bar is not full, and set at 4,300mb. The total running time of the reauthored dvd is 3hr 25mins,and fits on the blank dvd without any compression. Would the quality of the picture be affected at this level, and is there anything else i should have adjusted or selected?

If it requires no compression, it will look like the original.
Are you sure about the 3hr 25mins?
It just doesn't sound right.

I agree. It doesn't sound right. Are you burning to the HD or disc? Do you have the preferences set to DVD-9 instead of DVD-5??

make sure you're ODDs are in DMA mode and not it PIO mode that will cause slowdown. I'm backing up movies with no compression in 12 mins or less! so 3 hours plus is way to long

Thanks for the reply ZoSoIV. The backup process dosn't take very long, and the 3hr 25mins is the actual time the reathored dvd plays for.
I am new to this, so sorry if this is obvious - I have found if i open the disc directly into dvd shrink the green bar is full and the compression automatically set at 58% before reauthoring. However, if i decrypt it using imgburn then open up the saved files in dvd shrink, the green bar is set at 3,717mb, and the whole movie and extras easily fits on without needing any reathoring or compression. Why would this be, and has an quality been lost?

It's very important when starting a thread to give as much information as possible in the first post.
Did this movie have duplicate titles and you selected only one?
Then this thread would make sense because sometimes a duplicate title would also double the playing time in the eyes of the software thus a 3 hour movie is really 1 1/2 hours.

Thanks for all the replys. What i really would like to know is-
If i decrypt using dvdfab, then open the saved files in dvd shrink, reauthor it(no compression required) then burn using imgburn, will i lose any of the quality along the way, having run it through 3 programmes, or will it still be near to the original?

I answered that in my first post.

Is there anything that i might be doing wrong then, because when i play the reauthored dvd back the quality is not as good as the original.

the blank disc quality and burn speed could affect that.
use Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim burning at 8x max

Thanks for the advice. I am currently using Verbatim DVD+R. Using imgburn, i have the write speed set at AWS(MAX). Having never burnt to DVD before this occasion, would i be right in thinking the lower the burn speed, the better the playback quality of the burnt disc? It doesn't matter to me how long the disc takes to burn, im just bothered about the final quality.

Not always. Sometimes too low is just as bad as too fast.
Try one at 10x another at 8x and another at 6x and run a scan.

I ran the scan you suggested, with the disc i burnt at 8X. It says the quality of each individual chapter is 100, but the disc is still not the best quality, and the same as the one as i burnt at max speed. Is there something else i need to look for on the scan?

I have managed to get a better quality re-authored disc, but i still have a problem with my compilation DVD-
I have reauthored 9 seperate scenes off 3 different DVD'S(3 scenes from each DVD). On the reauthored DVD, the first 3 scenes from DVD1 play fine, as do the next 3 scenes from DVD2. But the final 3 off the 3rd DVD are blurry. It's driving me mad. I have tried burning on different speeds(6X,8X). Any ideas?

the quality problem doesn't add up since there is NO compression. can you try a different DVD burner

Here's what i just found - if i open the original disc directly into dvd shrink, reauthor it, then burn with imgburn the copy is perfect, yet the method which i originally used produced inferior quality discs, why could this be?
Here's is my original method- i was using dvdfab to decrypt the dvd's, saved the files, then opened up the files in dvd shrink, reauthored them, back-up, the opened the backedup files in imgburn and burnt to disc. I am saving the files too many times, thus reducing the quality? Any other suggestions? I appreciate your constant advice, hopefully i have nearly cracked this problem!
thanks

two things to check/try
1. make sure you haven't reduced the target size in dvd shrink, you want it at about 4350MB.
2. have you tryed using a different program like clonedvd or nero recode? and do you have the same results?
different movie files will have different compression rates. you are aware of that right?

Burning speed should have nothing to do with it nor should the max DVD size. Those 2 things may produce erratic playback and stuttering, but not blurriness problems at exactly the point where DVD3 starts. Re-do your project and put the scenes from DVD3 first and see if they still look blurry. Also what is the total runtime of this comp?
