I don't know where to really begin. Last night I went through the banner bomb to install the homebrew channel. I have a version 4.0 so I did step 0 and 1. Every time I try to load the CIOS fix on step 2 though the screen just goes blank. I decided to run the fix_CIOS but it seems to fail (out of option 1 where you added the IOS357 (or whatever it was and the longer file name that loaded fine. Also everything online loaded fine when it did the automatic) So I skipped that and went on and did the rest of the steps up until I believe it was step 8 (something about Mios). Since I didn't have an older version of it running it said I could skip the step and its the one after that. Once I ran that the same thing happened just a blank screen. I went back to the wad manager and installed the backup loader. It loaded fine. I tried a backup of my game and it didn't play.

My questions are.

1. Why do you think it is blanking out?
2. Is there a way to tell that everything is as up to date or revision wise as it needs to be?

EDIT: I tried doing all the steps over again by formatting my sd card and using a different source. Same result.

I'd have to go home and look exactly. The steps are numbered on my homebrew channel (sorry if all of them are like this, this is my first wii softmod).

I want to say it is step 2 (it was the step after you load IOS57 and some rev number)it is where the instructions tell you to load fix_cios. The button says custom wad manager. Oddly I can go to step 1 which I would imagine takes you to the same screen and try to run the fix_cios but it fails.

Thanks for your help.

I'm not sure you get it. It sounds like you are following a guide of some sort. There are a lot of guides with a lot of steps out there, so saying that you are stuck on Step 2 without telling me the guide you're following would be like me telling you that I'm stuck on level 4 but not tell you the game I'm playing.

So if you'd be more specific you'll get more help.

I understand what you are saying. I'm saying that its not a guide its in the homebrew channel (which is labeled with numbers 0-9)when I run it. Apparently not all of them look the same way after you load the boot.elf and get the homebrew channel. Sorry for that confusion.

I can't seem to run fix_cios out of the wad manager. Whenever I select that button in homebrew the page goes blank, the controller turns off, and you need to unplug the unit and plug it back in. When I try to load it out of the button that worked for loading the IOS37 and the rev_filename something it just says error.

bannerbomb w/ bootmii, but I didn't install bootmii. It seemed to suggest that bootmii was only if you wanted to backup the os to restore in the future. I didn't do this because I was afraid another screen would bootup on restart and the kids would get confused and screw something up. Also sorry if I'm sounding confused. I've looked up so much information in the last 24 hours that it's overloaded my brain.

thanks again.

I recently installed homebrew channel w/ bannerbomb/bootmii myself and I don't recall any steps, it just installs it for you once it finds a vulnerable IOS. Can you not even get HBC installed, or can you install HBC but then are getting troubles trying to install some kind of other IOS?

Maybe if you point out to me where you got your files from I could help you out? Also what are your goals? mIOS is meant for gamecube games and I don't even know what IOS357 is for.

HBC seems to be installed as its viewable and you can get in the channel.

Dumb question that might just end you pulling out your hair :)

If the HBC channel is there and the backup channel is there, then are we just running around in circles and everything should work, or is it possible that a file still hasn't been updated/installed?

If you want to run backups you need
1. Homebrew Channel
2. Backup Loader (if you want to run backups from recordable DVD discs)
or USB Loader (if you want to run backups from USB) These can either be selectable from the Homebrew Channel or you can make a channel of them on the System Menu
3. cIOS (at least rev 9 to use the USB loader and at least 5 or 6 I think to use the backup launcher)

Also there is no IOS357, the Wii only has 256 IOS slots.

I would go HERE and follow this guide.

You do not have to install the HBC.wad or BUL3g.wad since you already have the Homebrew Channel and WiiGator 0.3 gamma installed.

Other then that follow all steps without skipping anything.

The confusion comes in when it gets to IOS. There are so many out there. I know that you need cIOS36rev10 or cIOS38rev12/13b but these need cIOS249 to be installed to. I was having this problem too and AMathews forwarded me to a tutorial on yafaze called "softmodding w/ 4.0 when you already have HBC" and it worked out for me.

Someone should make a list of exactly what cIOS are out there, what they do, what you require to install them and in what order to install them.

Thanks :) Sorry for sounding so confused. With so many different numbers and not even knowing what cIOS stands for (figured it was something operating system) I wasn't even sure what I was really modifying.

I will try the tutorial above. Just in case bruce can you link the tutorial you have also.

The issue is the 4.0 firmware is blocking the cIOS from being installed.

The cIOS is a custom IOS (IOS is kind of like an Independent Operating System). Each IOS works on its own. The Backup and USB Loader will not work with an Official Nintendo IOS. So Waninkoko created a custom IOS with custom code that allows the Backup and USB Loaders to run.

Apparently, the CIOSrev9 link isn't up anymore. I take it installing CIOSrev13 is fine?

I would stick with cIOS38_rev12. rev13 and rev13b has some minor bugs.

You can get cIOS38_rev12 HERE.

You do have Homebrew Channel correct?

Just place the cIOS38_rev12 folder in the apps directory on the SD card.

Now launch it with the Homebrew Channel.

Make sure you choose to do a Network Install (not WAD Install) when running the installer.

Yup I have the home brew channel.

So in essence the dol/elf then points to a wad (whether it be on the network or on the card)?

yes. In general, to run a .dol file through HBC you must put it in X:/apps/name/boot.dol (or boot.elf) where X is your SD card drive and name is the name of ur program. You don't necessarily need a wad, only IOS upgrades need a WAD file which in this case u can get from WiFi.

There may also be icon.png and meta.xml in X:/apps/name/ which tag the program so it looks better in the channel rather than just looking like /apps/prog/boot.dol it will look like "__Program Name__" and have a picture showing what it is.

once everything has been done can you have a blank sd card with just a folder called apps in there? or will you always need an sd card with all the files in the folder.

Yep you can, although some apps (like SNES emulator) require you to put some other files (like roms) in another folder. What other than /apps/ do u have there now? Wad files? Yea you don't need those once they are installed.

Of course if you have legitimate wiiware games (like me) they will be in the /private/ folder.

The private folder u had for bannerbomb should be deleted.
