I have been using DVDXCopy for 5 months now with a 50/50 ratio of success. Support has been marginal at best with no solutions provided so this newest problem seemed a good candidate for input from a mass of experience. I am getting two error boxes one on top of the other just as the burn stage begins and the buffer and elapsed time box is up and then I get first underneath "Optical Power Calibration Area Error" and on top so it would be second "Optimum Laser Power Calibration Failed" Like I said I have had some success but these just showed up and stopped a nice streak of backed up movies. Even the failure errors in the past were erroneous most of the time and the discs proved to be good, playable copies.I have searched for Laser problems at this site but found none. Any ideas?

Try searching "power calibration" and you'll find many, many threads on the subject :)

Sounds like your DVD burner is need of a firmware update or you may need to update your ASPI layer. Go to adaptec.com and get the aspi layer update for your operating sytem.

You can also get this error when have blank media that your your burner does not like, stick to what you know worked before... just my advice - I also started with 321`s Platinum and DVDXCopy software and have had fair ammount of problems but since comming accross DVDShrink I haven`t looked back - it is free and is a lot better than than 321`s DVDXcopy AND WILL NOT give you any of the above problems, so far it has worked 100% for me - Highly Recommended

Thank you, I have gone to TDK media only. The Memorex,
and Verbatim 4x (with the fancy movie reel lable)were just not working at all. Since going back to TDK 2x I have good burns but the 4x dosn't seem to work even though the burner is 4x supported. All firmware updates and aspi layers are installed.Aspi chk says it is installed correctly. When the industry drops 2x I may be in trouble. How is the compression on the DVDShrink?
As good or better than DVDXCopyExpress? The one reason I like the DVDXCopy Gold even though two output discs
are needed for most movies is the quality of the copy.

Hey, I'm new to this but I b/u about 40 dvd's and got some to work others skip and freeze up. Then one that might have worked before would skip and freeze the next time I tried to watch it. aaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!! So some said might be media and instead of wasting fifty bucks of blank fuji 4x media I downloaded dvdshrink 3.1 and five burned and five viewed with no prob's. I think the editing is even a little easier.......

With Shrink you can split the movie to two disks as well thus preserving the original quality. When shrinking (this is what DVDXCopy Express does) it gives you greater flexibility what to omit or what to leave on the disk, that way you can increase the quality of your back up by leaving out stuff you do not want and cutting the credits at the end of the movie this way you`ll have less data to compress which will result in greater quality of the back up. I have used both DVDXCopy Platinum and Express + DVDShrink and can not tell the difference in quality of the back ups they produce. Shrink is FREE and have a lot more features than most paid programs out there.

Thanx for the info, I'm installing 'shrink today and can't wait to try something that hopfully won't give me the grief XCopy has.I'll relate my experience when I've made a few copies.

I forgot to mention that in order for DVDShrink to burn you will need Nero5.5 or higher installed on your PC. You can get a trial version from the Nero site I think it`ll be good for a month before it expires. If you do not want to do that get DVD Decrypter(free)- as well as decrypting it`ll also burn files compressed with DVDShrink. Ether way, make sure you read the help files that come with Shrink, they have a few links to some very good online guides, if you read one of them you`ll be fine... good luck!

I have gotten this error a few times when making b/u of a 321 b/u and it seems to be when I have tried to un check some options in movie. So I usually restart pc and shrink make sure disk is clean and scratch free then open disc and leave all options checked. So far so good. I've read that this usaully is because of a dirty and scratched dvd but sometimes like with any software just shutting it down and restarting fixes the prob.

Thanks Yordan, I do have DVDDecrypter and am seriously considering purchasing the latest ver. of Nero as the whole package will probably be useful at one time or another.

Hello, I have recently read some input that talks about the same skipping prob. with dvds w/labels. So I'm now taking a few off of some that I've had problems with and see if it fixes the problem. Anyone ever hear of this?

DO NOT post any links to warez on this site. Read the forum rules.
Nero has a 30-day trial version that can be downloaded from their site if you want to give it a try.

DVD XCopy/Express both have a relatively piss-poor burning engine.
DVD Shrink with either DVD Decrypter or Nero will give consistently better results than XCopy.
With Shrink, to burn with Decrypter do the following:
When you hit "Backup" you're presented with a new screen that has the option "Select Target Device", choose "ISO Disc Image" then let her rip.
To burn with Nero do the following:
Edit>Preferences>File I/O then tick the "Enable Burning With Nero" box. Now you're set to burn with Nero.
99% of skipping and freezing can be attributed to low grade media. If you're using good software such as Shrink/Decrypter/Nero/RecordNow along with quality media such as Ritek G04 or Verbatim (Metal AZO preferably) your chances of a successful burn go way up.
