Much help needed on this one amigos. Just installed a brand new Plextor 708A (with latest updates), latest version of DVDShrink and DVDDecrypter, plus NERO 6 Ultra (with latest updates as well) on my friends computer:
Dell 8250
P4 2.6MHz
256 RAM
120 GB Hdd
Win XP Home

I have copied several movies to hdd and started the burn process with DVDShrink and/or NERO 6 and burn process fails when the 65-67% is reached. I have used verbatim dvd+r medium (which btw is very good) but have made 4 straight coasters. Now I have gone to dvd+rw medium with same results...I am at a total loss, can anyone help me out on this one? I have a similiar setup at home and burn witn NO problems at all.

What error message is Nero giving when the burn fails?

Have you checked if DMA is enabled for the burner?

Is the burner on Master?

Here are the last three entries from the log I saved.

5:22:35 PM #30 Phase 38 File APIProgress.cpp, Line 266

Burn process failed at 4x (5,540 KB/s)

5:22:35 PM #31 Text 0 File AudioCompilationImpl.cpp, Line 828

DRM: DRM burn session terminated.

5:22:35 PM #32 Text 0 File AudioCompilationImpl.cpp, Line 857

DRM: Closing entire DRM handling. Bye.

Also, How do I check to see if DMA is enabled for the burner?

The burner and dvd rom are on cable select?

Also, I made sure that there are two folders VIDEO_TS, and AUDIO_TS and that all movie files are in the VIDEO_TS folder and AUDIO_TS stays empty.

jazzyg: Start with DVD Shrink. Let it rip the DVD files to your HD, compress them, and burn them using Nero. This works for me. Ipp

Hiya jazzyg,

Try this for checking DMA:

1.Open Device Manager.

2.Double-click IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers to display the list of controllers and channels.

3.Right-click the icon for the channel to which the device is connected, select Properties, and then click the Advanced Settings tab.

4.In the Current Transfer Mode drop-down box, select DMA if Available if the current setting is "PIO Only."
If the drop-down box already shows "DMA if Available" but the current transfer mode is PIO, then the user must toggle the settings.

I'd also suggest setting the burner to Master and the ROM to Slave - it may help :)

You're getting this with Nero? I've never run into this myself. What DVD are you trying to back up? Is it one of those mixed DVD-A and video deals?

I don't know if this helps but you mentioned that you set your DVD writer to cable select. I would recommend you set it to master. For my writer, my installation manual recommended the master setting for best results.

Hope it works for you.

I also have a 708A Great Drive. You didn't mention this so i'm assuming you didn't do this.
Go to the Plextor homepage and download the latest firmware for the 708A and install it. also your ASPI Layer must be working properly, you can get these drivers at http://www.adaptec.com
One last thing, make sure your patin-couffin drivers are installed, That should do it.

All those Dells seem to come with both drives set to CS. Change the jumpers on them to slave and master. The one at the end of the IDE cable should be set to master and the one in the middle to slave. Your Plexor should be in the top bay, at the end of the cable and set to master, your DVD ROM should be in the lower bay, connected to the middle of the cable and set to slave.

After you do that, set your IDE busses to DMA.

Start> RT click My Computer> properties> Hardware> Device manager.
From the list, find IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers and click on the + in the box to expand.
RT click on the Primary IDE channel> properties> advanced settings.
Change the Transfer Mode to "DMA if available".
Repeat the process for the Secondary IDE channel and reboot.

OMG! You people constantly amaze me!! (She says with a very sweet grin on her face - and no sarcasim at all intoned)

Although the problem discussed in this thread isn't the problem I was researching tonight (whoops I mean this morning) - I just thought I'd quickly take this opportunity to express my thanks and gratitude for the freely given expertise and advise on this site.

I'd been having a couple of specific problems and started with a search a couple of hours ago - yes I found the answers to my queries and a whole lot more I must add. The time has just flown by as I've become more and more engrossed reading the threads and discovering more and more information.

I'm quite excited now!! Ahhhh its off to the search engine again to check out my next query.

I am truly frustrated with this. I have changed the burner and dvd-rom from cable select to master/slave, reinstalled Nero 6, made sure that the controllers are dma and not pio, and reinstalled Nero 6...what else am I missing?

Everything is fine until about 72% then there is a write error and the program stops (every single time). Do you all think I need more ram (currently have 256mb)?

How do I check to see if I have the correct aspi layer and patin couffin? HELP!

grogey,

It's DVD Info Pro and can be found here:

jazzyg,

If you download Adaptec's ASPI 4.7.1 and extract to a folder, there should be utility there called ASPICHK which will give you the skinny on your ASPI :)

Nephilim

Downloaded the aspichk and found out that I was missing all four components. However, after I followed the instructions and retried the burn still had problems at 72%. Rechecked the aspi and found out that only two (aspi32.sys and wnaspi) of the four components were added to my system. WOWpost.exe and Winaspi.dll or missing. Where can I download these?

Thanks Nephilim, you are a treasure.......just downloaded and installed then.

I didn't find it before as I got totally sidetracked with all the other threads I started to read.

If you are using XP you will only have the two aspi drivers(aspi32.sys and wnaspi).

I used the info tool that's part of the Nero 6 Ultra package and it tells me that the system aspi is corrupted. How can I go back and uninstall the aspi drivers or overwrite them?

The info tool does that but that doesn't mean that your aspis is corrupt it just doesn't read it right. All you need are aspi32.sys and wnaspi and you can uninstall it over and over again, reformat and start with a clean install and it will still read it as corrupt. When you downloaded the drivers from adaptec all you had to do was make certain that you have the right drivers for your operating system. If you want to undo it you can use sytem restore and go back a couple of days and they will be gone.

I tried to use the restore but for some reason it will not work. I have tried to restore back two, three, and even a week, but the system restore will not work...do you have any suggestions?

If you download ForceASPI and extract to a folder there should be an MS-DOS batch file in there called KILLASPI that will wipe the layer and allow you to reinstall however you like :)

I had similar problem with the burner Sony DRU-510A which stopped at 88% -> 92% at 4X writing speed !

I used Intervideo DVD Copy 2 and used its embedded burning program . After 4 coasters, I currently used "Intervideo DVD Copy 2 " just to trancode the DVD-9 then used Nero Ultra 6.3.1.6 to burn from the hard drive at 2X. So far it worked well .

I still do not know for sure why ?? It is interesting to note that I had no problem burning DVDs at 4x with Nero Ultra before. The issue appeared only a few days ago.
It is frustrating to burn DVDs at 2X , especially when Nero Ultra and Sony DRU-510A both support burnt-safe . I would love to hear further comments on this issue. Thanks,
