I am new to DVD shrink. I am using v 3.1.6 on an HP system with XP home sp 1 and a HP DVD 300n writer (DVD+R/RW). I have made backups of about 5 DVDs. Some play fine on my DVD player but others begin skipping and break up after about 15 minutes or so. The original plays fine. I tried making another backup but it has the same problems. DVD decryptor says it's not encrypted. The DVD I am working with is "Minority Report".
Any suggestions ?

The problem lies with the discs you are using to burn to. Try changing the discs to a different brand - Ritek are a good choice. Also check out the DVD-R media threads. Don't use DVD Decrypter when also using DVD Shrink.

I'm new at this but have read most threads and printed most of the tutorials. I'm using Shrink 3.1.7 on the site and try to do a backup. All works fine until about 3 mins left and then tells me "encountered problem with VB_01 etc." Tried a copy and paste to hard drive and same thing. Doesn't matter which DVD it try. Any help would be appreciated.

Why does everyone say not to use DVD Decrypter with DVD Shrink. I have used the DVD Decrypter and made an ISO image for movies like the Sopranos. and then used DVD Shrink to shrink it onto one DVD Ritek plus 4x and burned it with Nero using the shrink program. I have burned all 4 Sopranos movies this way without any problems. I have also buned the 2 Shield movies and the 3 CSI movies this way. Anyone who says this dont work is full of what makes the grass grow green.

I don't believe anyone's trying to imply it doesn't work, just that it is an extra step that isn't necessarily needed all the time.

as for peon99 the answer is the media your using , try switching to a good quality media and hey presto your problems gone , i would recomend to anyone backing up dvds to buy good quality media ie. ritek or vertabin .
as for DVD Decrypter it is a usefull tool for when DVD Shrink runs into errors and we have all had instances when shrink encounters problems with the odd file .
that said i would recomend you install DVD Decrypter, its free like shrink and easy to use .
happy burning :o)

Okay, I went out and sprang for some "good" quality DVD+RW. (TDK). Will try them today. Never heard of Ritek and don't see it on the shelves of my local Best Buy. Is there a good way of determining the quality of the DVDs, other than price and brand name? The only thing I can think of would be recording speed, but these TDKs are 2.4x, just like my other, cheaper ones.

The age of his home DVD player might also be a consideration. Peon99, have you tried the same back ups on a different home player?

I had to go out and buy a new home player last week because my older one would not support DVD+R/RW format, which is the only format my burner will handle. So I have a brand new player, a Sony DVP-NS725P.

You can buy Ritex which I think is the best media to burn DVD at www.meritline.com. They sell them cheaper than anyone else I can find on the internet and provide free shipping. It takes about 1 week to get. They are a very nice company to so business with.

I am also getting a message "encountered problem with VB_04 etc" when I try to rip and burn a DVD-9 using Shrink 3.1.7. This happens toward the end of ripping only when I have the Target Device set to Image Recorder and the flag set to launch DVD Decryptor for burning. If I set the Target Device to Hard Disk Folder, it will complete the ripping. I've tried burning with Nero without success ("drive in use by another application" error).
Sure appreciate any suggestions...

iff you get a problem trying to rip a dvd with shrink ie. file error or so on , try DVD Decrypter first as ive found it takes no prisoners .
then try shrink to reduce it to the right size.
occasionaly shrink does run into probs ripping a dvd dont know why , ive found DVD Decrypter is usually the saviour when shrink encounters an error.
ps. i never backup a full disc i only ever rip and shrink the movie in DVD Shrink reauthor mode.
hope my two pence worth helped , happy burning :o)

The latest version of DVD Shrink allows burning directly with Nero after ripping, but you must check in options and preferences that you have enabled this. It is not recommended that you rip a disc first with Decrypter before using Shrink as quite often Shrink will not recognise or refuse to shrink the files. This is because Shrink uses its own version of Decrypter. If you have managed to do this on a disc that Shrink refuses to rip then you are fairly lucky. In my experience there are always a few discs that refuse to rip, no matter what programme you use. This is because the disc is damaged in some way and is something you just have to accept. Alays make sure the disc is cleaned before trying to rip it.

1 - rip the full disc or movie with DVD Decrypter
2 - open shrink and select open files istead of open disc
3 - load the VIDEO_TS folder
4 - select backup
5 - away you go no probs

As I say woof811 this is not recommended for copying using DVD Shrink. There have been times when these threads have been litered with posts about DVD Shrink not working after trying to load DVD files ripped with Decrypter. You should only try this if Shrink will not rip completely - even then you will be lucky (as you have been) not to encounter problems. I would guess that because only one vob had read problems with Shrink this is the reason why Decrypter has worked in this case, but if you had gotten the message 'cyclic redundancy check' I doubt if any ripping software would have been able to do the job.

I agree with Discmania, ripping with DVD Decrypter and then compressing with DVD Shrink is not always a workable solution. When DVD Shrink fails to back up a disk, I turn to DVD Decrypter, DVD2one 1.4 (which I have because it joins split movies and sometimes I need an alternative) and Nero for bunring, DVD2one can also be checked to engage Nero once the compression is finished. For type 5 disks DVD Decrypter will rip and burn.

Well, I made a copy with a higher-quality blank and the copy appears to be perfect. This is one of those cases when one can never prove that the problem has been resolved, but so far, so good. Thanx all for your help.

The plot sickens. My copies with the new "higher" quality blanks were at best marginally better than the ones using the older, cheaper blanks. But yesterday, my DVD burner died. So maybe that was the problem all along. I should get a replacement this week (hurray for warranties) and then see if I have any better luck.

I hear you loud and clear, mine has almost a couple of years on it sounds a little rough when I open and close it. I'm hoping that it will last until either a faster than 8X comes along at a good price or the release of the new dual layer recorders.
