Well I've had an interesting couple of days. Did as most people recommended a while ago and bought a stack of Ritek G04s.......what a nightmare!
Getting a good burn here and a good burn there but just as many bird scarers.......
Got the better of me yesterday - figured there must have been some incompatibility problem with the 411s and the Ritek Go4s so I went a hunting.......
Discovered that I was certainly not alone on this. Many of the 411S had trouble with any -R media and seemly mostly with the Ritek G04s. I'd already updated to the latest firmware so did some research on that and discovered that the FSOF version of the firmware was more suited to Ritek GO4s. Also suggested that RecordNow would be a better choice of software for the 411S.
So I flashed the drive again - got 1 good burn followed by 2 bad...aaarrrrrhhhhhhh. Kept hunting though and discovered that a possiblity was modifying the 411S to an 811S - which meant that not only did I have more chance of better and more consistant burns but if I ever get my hands on any 8x media I could burn at the higher speed. certainly glad I didn't spend the extra $$$ on the 8 speed when I bought the 411S.
So tonight I took the plunge - things looked a bit grim for a while - but I reread the instructions that came with the mod (Zebra Mod V4) and went back over all the steps again.
Guess what? I've now got a LDW811S DVDRW Whhoooohooo. Haven't long since installed all the stuff so really haven't had a change to check it out properly and do all the testing - but I have burnt one disc with RecordNow:
<<<<<<< Data Job - 1 Disc(s) 1 Recorder(s) - Lite-on DVDRW LDW-811S HSTQ - 4x - Record >>>>>>>
115 - 30/04/2004 11:57:56 PM |01| Job 1 - RecType:2 Mode:1 FSType:3
106 - 30/04/2004 11:57:59 PM |01| Job 1 Round 1 Started - 1 Recorder(s)
124 - 30/04/2004 11:58:04 PM |01| Job 1 Scanning
107 - 1/05/2004 12:13:18 AM |01| Job 1 Round 1 Terminated - 1 Good Disc(s)
109 - 1/05/2004 12:13:18 AM |01| Job 1 Completed successfully <<<<<<< 1 Good Disc(s) >>>>>>>
Previous burns since installing this software had been:
<<<<<<< Data Job - 1 Disc(s) 1 Recorder(s) - Lite-on DVDRW LDW-411S FS0F - 4x - Record >>>>>>>
Job 1 Completed successfully <<<<<<< 1 Good Disc(s) >>>>>>>
Job 1 Aborted by user <<<<<<< 0 Good Disc(s), 1 disc(s) to go >>>>>>> burner light had gone orange & after an hour it should have been finished!
Job 1 Completed successfully <<<<<<< 1 Good Disc(s) >>>>>>>
Job 1 Terminated with errors <<<<<<< 0 Good Disc(s), 1 Bad Disc(s) >>>>>>>
DVDInfoPro says

Book Type DVD-R
Media Type DVD-R
And on the disc error read - completely free!! Not even a white block in sight.
Also ran a scan with a program called Kprobe2 - not really sure how it works and how to read the results of the graphs other than you need PO's of less than 4 for a good read and my average was 2.19.
I'll try some different software and testing tomorrow and see what gives - if anyone has any suggestions of tests so I can give it a good stress out and run to see if it really up to scratch......but I can honestly say I am almost excited.
Neglected to add something important to this post: I didn't disable a single solitary thing during this burn - was still surfing the net, sending emails, and generally stuffing around on the computer, full anti-virus running plus 2 fire-walls and three other programs as well as the background programs
Can't wait to try an ISO Write in Decrypter - that will test it out.

Well the most amazing thing has happened: Last night I burnt two discs in a row. First as shown above and the second using DVD Decrypter ISO Read/Write method. Anyone who has read any of my previous posts on this will know that I've NEVER been able to get a usable disc using that method prior to the modification. I should mention here that when using the ISO Write last night I paid particular attention to how steady the write speed was on my now 411S@811S drive. Prior to the mod it used to be up and down and all over the place.
Write speed reached 4.0 within 20 secs and stayed steady at that speed for the entire disc - took exactly 11mins 19secs to burn. With the 4.42min read as discussed below that meant I was able to copy the whole disc (3.49gig) in approximately 16mins......and got a perfect disc in return!
I was almost excited last night, so I forgot to mention the other overclocking I did. I also have a JLMS XJ-HD166S DVD-ROM and which has a DVD read speed of 6x. I used Liteon 166-s Speed/optimize Limit Removed Beta Released (dangerous Brothers) 12x/14x mod on that drive. It now reads up to 14x with no problems at all.
Ripped disc to HD last night 3.49gig in 4.42mins with a max read speed of 12.3x in Decrypter.
My excitement levels are definitely going up now!!
Next adventure is to use a +R Verbatim that I managed to borrow and see what happens when I do a burn at 8X. I'm then off for an hours drive to acquire some more discs.....they have a few different ones available TDK, Teac, Verbatim etc so will bring a varied assortment home and have a bit of a play over the rest of the weekend and see what results I can come up with. Am even looking forward to trying an "On The Fly" copy.

Oh, jeez.
I'm interested as to why your 166S would only read at 6X. I've the same model and mine has always read at up to 14X with no mod whatsoever. How new or old is yours? I've had mine for around two years now.
I'm so glad things are working :) You've been through the ringer trying to get things to work!
Do you have DVD Info Pro? I'm interested to see who's making the TDK and Teac discs. Would you be so kind as to check them and post results?

Happy burning :)

Wasted my money on this one methinks - Drives says no media present. Both in 411S@811S and JLMS XJ-HD166S
The JLMS XJ-HD166S has always been "slow" at reading - purchased about October 2003 methinks so not that old.
So lets start burning and see just how good I hope these mods are.

Hiya grogey, thanks for the info.
I noticed the manufacturer code for the Media Cache made in India starts with "MB" which means they could very well be Moser Baer. I've not used their DVDs but their CDs weren't exactly stellar.
The Teacs look like they're CMC which is another iffy manufacturer.
Are the Riteks still giving you trouble after the firmware mod? Let us know the results when you get some of your new discs burned up!
Take care :)

Play in JLMS XJ-HD166S DS1C FIRMWARE (patched) just fine!
Play in Celestial standalone: Just fine!
Play in XMS888 standalone: Just fine!
So what ya reckon??? Me is pretty happy but lets see what happens as we go along.

THE RESULTS ARE IN!!!!!
The headlines in Tuesday's local paper (yeah yeah I know - but we only have two issues a week - Tuesdays and Fridays.........I keep on telling ya's I live in the bush!
GROGEY'S BURNER WORKS!!
In astounding developments over the weekend, local DVD addict, Grogey, was able to burn 7 DVD's in a row without a single solitary error.
One of the amazing aspects of this story is that Grogey used a variety of software and methods to carry out feats that had previously been unattainable. Some of these methods are listed below:
1)Teac DVD+R media - RecordNow software - write to disc from HD.
2)DigiMedia DVD-R media - CopyToDVD software - write to disc from HD.
3)RitekGO4 -R media - RecordNow software - write to disc from HD
4)RitekG04 -R media - DVD Decrypter software - ISO Read/Write method.
5)Teac DVD+R media - CopyToDVD software - disc to disc - OnTheFly!!
6)Teac DVD+R media - CopyToDVD software - write disc from HD
7)DigiMedia -R media - CopyToDVD software - disc to disc - OnTheFly!
In an effort to make sure that all results were verified, Grogey meticulously tested and took notes on each method. Results seemed to vary little, with the exception being on the Kprobe2 charts. Overall the PO scores were well within range on each scan, however the PI score on the ISO Read/Write method did seem a little high. Testing including error read in DVDInfoPro, BLER can in Kprobe2, error check with CDCheck, Speed readings in DVDInfoPro, Nero CD-DVD Speed.
Although the technical tests showed postive results, the true success of the modifications came with the actual playing of the DVDs. In all 4 available devices (LDW411S@811S drive, JLMS XJ-HD166S drive, Celestial Standalone player and XMS888 Standalone player) viewing of the actual movies was an astounding success. Grogey received a thunderous round of applause, yelling and screaming from her three rugrats when they were allowed to stay up a little later than usual to watch Toy Story - the original of which had long been allocated to the unusable spindle.
Grogey informs us that although she is more than ecstatic with the results so far, she is keen to see just how good these upgrades are. On the board for future testing are:
1)Using Nero.
2)Using DVDShrink with a Nero burn.
3)Finding which one of the recently purchased discs will allow 8x burning and use it.
Further developments will be reported as the results come to hand.

Three cheers for grogey!! Outstanding progress :)
Question for you though, I've read that K-Probe isn't as accurate when using Lite On ROMS instead of their burners. Have you found this to be true? I have a 166S like you , but no Lite On burner so I was wondering how accurate K-Probe is in the 166 compared to the burner.
Take care :)

Very true Nephilim, you can do the scan on them but the Roms don't stick to the specified speed like the burners do. Out of curiousity I did do a couple in each drive just to compare and they are way way different.
You really need a burner for the BLER scans to be effective.

Interesting. I have a 411s myself, and about 150 Ritek G04 discs purchased from Shop4tech.com. I updated my firmware to the latest FS0J(I think), but not the Z-Mod. The only problem I found was one of my hard drives would read at a max of 3.5x so burning at 4x was pausing. I fixed the hard drive, and now everything is great. I'm tempted to try the Z-Mod, but keep thinking the old addage "If it aint broke, don't fix it."

I decided to try the Z-Mod. Works OK, but still can't burn 8x even with speedhack. I was using HS0P firmware and still had some problems on Ritek G04-R. I installed the latest HS0Q firmware and got a perfect burn!

as i started typing this, i was gonna say i just did the zmod with success(appears to be success)
but went to burn and it didnt recognize the disc in drive.....then did.....
then took forever to initialize disc....then said there was an error...
then took a lil while to initialize disc again and now has started to burn.
BUT there is 59 mins left and its at 7% only
so it seems like its not burnin at 8x, but 1-2x like it was before...
i guess as long as i can burn copies i will be happy..
FOR NOW!
