Several people have said Ritek is good, Verbatim also. Are there different types of disks within those brands that I should avoid or ones I should gravitate to? Or, are all 4.7gb 4x DVD-R pretty much the same within the brand? fyi- using these to copy movies.

Generally speaking it is the RitekG04's that are considered top notch. Any media that has metal azo recording dye is considered good.

In my situation I found finding the right media - and I am still testing is subject to many variations.

What media does your burner like best? (test results with KProbe2 or DVDInfoPro etc)

What model firmware do you have installed - for example before I modded my Liteon 411S to an 811S, I'd done as everyone suggested and upgraded to the latest firmware FSOJ.....however at the time I had a huge stack of the RitekG04s.....and this firmware didn't like Riteks all that much. After doing a bit of research I found that firmware version FS0F was much more compliant with Ritek and I did have improved results.....not great but better.

Do you have a seperate rom for reading? This can made a difference to burning on the fly etc and quality of rips.

You computer system itself - OS Version, quality of data cables, etc - all add to the variances.

At present I'm trying out a few different media from cheap to expensive, A-Grade to crap......simply because the 411S has been noted on several occasions to like cheap crappy media. I'm getting great success with TEAC (CMC MAG F01) which of course are not noted in the best of category. Burns are great, Kprobe readings pretty good (not as good as the verbatim but until I can source these a bit cheaper they can stay where they are). My biggest concern with the cheapies is how long they last.

Most of the stuff I'm backing up now is kid's stuff which they will outgrow in a few years so it's not such an issue - but when we are talking about my favourite movies......Bridget Jone's is definitley worth a verbatim at any price hehehehehe

Mmmmmm I probably haven't helped you at all - just confused you.

I've had very good success with the Ritek's with the media codes of RICOHJPN01 as well. Not sure - I know nothing was listed as G04 on them but the G04's are very nice indeed. I have some TDK's that seem to be ok and they are CMC Magnetics media. Although I've been dealing with KT133A chipset issues and waiting on round cables to come in so I can move everything over to my shiney new Promise IDE Controller so I don't have to depend on the VIA chipset for my media so I can't fully test yet. :( Hopefully for the weekend I'll have my shiney new black round cables. :D

I have had a really good sucess rate w/ the Ritek G04 and also the cheaper Piodata DVD-R's. Also tried the Memorex and haven't had any problems but I have heard mixed opinions about these discs and that the lifetime isn't too long for these. I think that ProDisc is another high quality brand & I will probably give these a shot when I finish up the 250 or so blank DVD's that I have accrued in the last couple of months (probably will ebay a good amount of them). It'd really help to let people know what country you're in , so as to give correct info ;-)

P.S. Do NOT but Orange Overprint Riek G04 DVD-R or DataSafe G04 DVD-R ... I left a thread round here (in DVD Media Forum where I moved this to - lol) showing pics of the G04 discs !!

Cheeky!!!

Just have to show you this though - two scans I've just done using the same media files from HD and written to disc with Nero 6.3.1.6. Aint they the most beautiful scans you have ever seen?

Whoops! I should probably mention for those people that haven't seen or heard of KProbe before - one of it's functions is a BLER scan which informs you of the quality of your burn.

A disc with no large areas of PI over 280 and/or no large areas of PO over 32 is considered good quality........so taking that into account my scan here are in the excellent category.!!!

What is this KPROBE? Is it a program and where can I get it at? I would like to have detailed information on the quality of my burns.

Yes it is a program, and it's free! .....takes a little getting used to reading how the scans work but worth the effort. Just make sure you scan at 4x and in your burner drive.

My tip is not to scan immediately you have burnt the disc - wait a few minutes for the disc to cool down - otherwise you get too much variation in the scans.

It would be interesting to compare a Ritek G04 unbranded or Datawrite brand, to an official Grade A Ritek, RiData, CloneDisc, Traxdata....

Another interesting one would be RiData versus Arita

good thinking 99.....now if only I wasn't a million miles from anywhere I might have been able to get my hands on a few of these and could do the comparisons.

I think I can get datawrite in the nearest city centre (1 hour away) as I can TDK - but not sure about any of the others. There's slim pickin's here in the bush!!

Just shows how you can get caught too - yesterday my folks were going to that nearest city centre so I made a couple of phone calls to see what I could get in discs. Spoke to "Sam" at a certain locally well known computer shop. Said he had a spindle of 50, generic discs that were G04 - told me they were Vertex brand (which I hadn't heard of before) and couldn't really come up with the manufacturer of . Anywhoose, got folks to pick them up - the spindle arrives home after a quick trip to the pokies!! lol and the discs actually have a brand of MarVo on them - so where the Vertex came from I don't know. On checking out with DVDInfoPro and KProbe - they tell me they are SONY discs.......SONY04D1 DVD-R 4x. Has anyone had any experience with these?

When I telephone to make enquiries about something I expect to be told the correct answers. I would have been pretty irate to have travelled over there to find out they weren't what they told me and they were incompatible with my drive.......just like the week before........when what they told me over the phone didn't even exist and I travelled an hour to get there.

I asked them could they run a disc through DVDInfoPro to tell me the media code and they didn't even know what that was???? This from the guy who told me a month before that their price for CD Burners installed was $200! OMG! I told him I'd be installing it myself for a friend so would want just the cost of the hardware. Reply was that it was no cheaper as they didn't sell to people who installed their own as hardware needed to be installed by a qualified technician to be covered by their guarantee.

I then told him that for $200 I'd want a DVD burner not a CD burner and he then said whoops that he meant $100 for a CD Burner. But the best part came when I asked him about the technician's qualifications - what were they......he ummm and ahhhh a bit and so I smiled and said
Quote:
Ah I get it.....his qualifications are as good as mine
. For some strange reason he then looked a tad embarrassed and walked off to serve another customer!!

lol - salesman are great bluffers arent they. Isnt there a way you can order online and have them delivered to your house, rather than rely on what sounds like a poor choice to get your discs from (since they seem to mess you around about).

There are many sales of Ritek and Ridata on Ebay.com.au if thats any help. Im not overly sure of media sales online for Australia - Samantha on this forum will be able to help there - ill ask her for you...

Good story isn't it?

Yes I do have a contact in Melbourne where I get my RitekG04 from for $1.25 each, but it takes 2 to 3 days - and it was just that the stash was getting so low that I wanted them now!! LOL

Patience is not one of my greatest virtues.

LOL , looks like we might have to take out a restraining order on Oriphus there !! : ]-~

I'm sorry to hear of such media dilemmas grogey , Sony media is a lot more reliable if using +R format.

If you can get your Ritek G04's for $1.25 each (AUS) ... that seems a very reasonable price & I'd also suggest buying in bulk.
Usually get X2 50 spindle at a time myself , I'm pretty much spoilt for choice of online media outlets here though ;-)

Thanks for the info on KProbe, Grogey. I would like to check the quality of my burns, but unfortunately, I have a Plextor 708A DVD burner and KProbe states that the program is for Liteon burners. :(

hi:

I'm kinda new at encoding ripping etc and with this forum but here is my take with about 2 months experience. I happen to like the BeALL dvd-r's from Meritline. I still have not made a coaster with them and they play 100% clear etc. Do I recommend them? yesyesyes. however they may not be good for you. I have used Ritek GO3's and GO4's and they are also very good. My worry about the BeAll's and any blank media for that matter is how will they stand up 1 year or 2 years from now. plus I'm putting white stick on labels from meritline on mine which is not supposed to be the best thing. Its just that it is so hard for everyone to like the same brand and get good results because everyone is using a different combination of computer, writer, memory, media, software etc etc. My Beall's play on my plextor 708 with windvd 5 or in my sony 725 and sony 5 disc carousel with no problems. they play in my friends Bose lifestyle. I just tried one in my friends Sony home theater all-in-one system and it wont play. This is a relatively new system. They wont play in a cheap coby dvd player that I have thats about 1 year old. What I like about the forum is everyone contributing their experience but the bottom line is to check out different media and software on your own system and do whats best after some exhausting testing to make the best backup you can...regards

lol @ white sticky labels (yes I imagine there WILL be problems later on down the line with any disc that has an adhesive sticker put on it) !!
BeAll media is cheap , but Ritek G04 isn't a lot more in price so why compromise yourself...

I certainly would NOT suggest/recommend BeAll to anyone !!

HI:

ok I will take your suggestion and get some Ritek GO4's from meritline. Meritline supposedly will take the BeAll's back according to the website. Does it matter which GO4's? The branded, shiny or matte finish?? In the meantime Sam's Club (owned by walmart) sells Verbatums for $49 for 50 of them. I can use those as my media of choice. which do u recommend? the ritek or verbatums?? As far as the labels I have put stick on labels on music cd's and they play great after 10 years. Why do you think there will be a problem with labels on dvds if they are put on correctly. lastly an original dvd either has a label or ink on the topside. so why isnt that a problem. thanks...

I would advise branded ritek media. Why dont you try a small quantity of Ritek & Verbatim then perhaps test the burning performance of both before commiting yourself hook line & sinker. You can use Nero cd speed or DVDinfopro for testing. They are both free.

DVD's hold far more information than a CD as you obviously know. The laser on a DVD is far more sharply focussed than it's CD counterpart. Hence the possibility of a "read error" is higher on a DVD-r than a CD.

Labels, even if they appear to be fitted evenly, can offset the balance of the disk with obvious results. Labels age, and have a tendency to peel. This situation could, and probably would, damage the hardware playing it. It is strongly advised to NOT apply a label for these reasons, but hey, it's your decision entirely.

Looking for my old AD

hi brian (and others):

thank you so much for your reply. I am trying to get as much info as I can because I have an extensive dvd collection that I have started to backup. OK I have read much about the labeling problems. There is also an article on cd freaks about it. From my exp. I have dvd copies as old as 3 months using labels from meritline (full coverage) and beall blanks. Everyone comes out 100% no coasters, plays beautifully. Yes I understand they are only 3 months old. Nothing I can do about that right now. I have 82 bealls left and "might" switch to ritek and verbatum only because the consensus seems to be with these 2 brands overall. I just haven't read of anyone from ACTUAL EXPERIENCE saying that the label glue has eaten thru the dvd causing read errors. The consenus on this subject seems to be the label throwing off the balance or peeling in the future. I cannot predict the peeling but it looks like these will stay on for many many many years if kept in their cases out of the sun etc. I am using a device that exactly lines up the label. Again I am here to learn as well as share my experience with others. Also returning these to Meritline has been a hassle for the last 3 hours. No one answers at the RMA tel. #. I might just go to Walmart and buy a cakebox of 50 Verbatum but again dvdinfopro gives my bealls 100% no read errors and they play with no dots, jerky movement etc. In a way I wish they did mess up because I hate to change something that isn't broken!!!! regards...
