I am going to backup my movie Scary Movie (Thats the name of the movie) I saw that if you just take the french audio off you get 100% quality. Now which program should I use to backup it. I know it probably won't matter, but are the transcoding different between these programs, and which of these programs will produce the best quality even if its at 100%

I may well be wrong, but surely @ 100% (IE no compression whatsoever) the quality of output will be exactly the same whatever package you use. So based on those facts I would use DVDshrink, because it's free.

ClipsEmx,

Just a word of warning.. I just used <DVD Shrink> to copy "The Last Samurai" . If I took the French Audio off , the compression level was at 68%. Otherwise , the comp. level = 60% . The problem is with French Audio gone, the DVD-R turned out mute !!! I had to recopy the DVD with the damned French Audio left in-place and everything was O.K. The lesson is : play the transcoded .VOB files with a DVD player program ( Ulead DVD player, PowerDVD etc...) on your PC to see if everything is O.K. before burn them to a DVD-R . Ofcourse if you have time, burn it to a DVD-RW first and see if you can play it on a stand alone DVD player.
I wonder if anyone got similar issue when copying "The last samurai" ?

Zooco I had a similar problem but It wasn't with DVD Shrink. I was burning The Green Mile with Intervideo dvd copy 2 and the audios that supported the movie were only English and French. So I only wanted English, so I selected it. After the transcoding and burning I noticed the sound was muted just like you said. I then tryed to burn the movie again and left all the audio languages on and the movie worked fine. I really didnt know why it didnt work. Well thats a similar problem to yours but I never had a problem concerning sound in DVD Shrink.

CLiPsEmX : Thanks for your info . My guess is that the issue occured with certain DVDs only because "The Last Samurai" is the first one I had problem with using "DVD Shrink" . The solution is to test out the .VOB files on the PC with a DVD playing program to see if U still get the English audio. Right now, I have no clue as to which DVD movies will produce this problem. Again, thanks .

It is amazing how different each set-up can behave. I used my copy of 'The last Samurai' to try a few different programs to get a reasonably good copy compressed on a single DVD+R: Shrink allows the best/most detailed choices of soundtracks and lets you see like no other program all the data about compression, etc. Shrink and Nero gave me 2 dreadful copies at 68% with lots of pixelation errors towards the end. I don't think it was the software though. The HD files were excellent, the problems developed with the burning process on one particular computer. Suspect firmware or poor matching between burner and Media(blank DVD). Shrink and Clone DVD worked fine but those burns were on a different computer. Intervideo DVDCopy2 was the FASTEST and the picture just LOOKED really good. I couldn't tell it had been compressed at all. Only drawback is the lack of any controls on what to keep and what to discard, very rudimentary compared to Shrink. Also a bit expensive at $80. On the other hand the program also lets you transcode to Divx, which is really nice. DVDCloner also has virtually no controls and ended up recording the Director's comments but not the original soundtrack, bummer! 1ClickDVDCopy was the surprise in this test. It was very SLOW (90 minutes) but the quality of the copy was extremely good. It also has no controls ('1Click') and kept the FBI warning, all the soundtracks and even the menu. So, compression had to be even higher than the other programs. It looked even better than Intervideo DVDCopy2. Remember this is just a subjective evaluation by myself and with one movie. I did not encounter any of the problems Zooca and Clips had. To tell you the truth, I have no idea what happened there... Hope this helps a little...

zooco,
If you notice in the video-ts folder, there would be 4 *.VOB files which contain movie. If you select THE 3RD ONE and play back in computer, it always come out in french audio. ( probably the way they make the dvd by switching audio but if when we burn back to dvd-r, there would be no problem). So if you rip out french audio, the final result would be "mute".
Also I dont have good quality in using DVD Shrink ! big pixel and many tiny black dots.
have anyone tried dvd cloner II ( but costs money). I try trial version and quality is so good. However, only half of dvd can be played even the backup *.VOB file in the HD.
this software was voted the best in dvd copy software review !! ( I agree by the quality after making backup on dvd-r)

siber,
I have tried 1clickDVDcopy , it slows but quality is good. And it have been voted 2nd best of dvd copy software in dvd copy review ! just because of using dvd43 in the background to pass scamble. However, i never get it "free" eventhough i tried all patches :) poor me
Same thing happens to dvd cloner II v2.20

Rhumcafe: I'm sure you didn't mean 'scramble' with DVD43. DVD43 is only for removal of Region Code, not for unscrambling encryption. DVD43 seems to work pretty well if you have WindowsXP or 2000. It doesn't work with 95,98,Me. I take it you also installed the 'Patin-Couffin access layer' before installing DVD43. Don't ask me what that really is but it is free and can be downloaded from the net. Without it DVD43 doesn't work.

Rhumcafe, clarify that for me. Are you saying that the program only lets you rip and burn the first hour or the first half of the movie? I got 1click on trial yesterday. It is full-function and lets me rip and burn the whole movie. The limitation is that you can only burn 4 movies in the 15 day trial period. After that you have to decide if you want to buy it. There are some other programs that actually do let you only burn 30 minutes or so in their trial version.

I'll try those software everyone mentioned. But is the 100% quality in DVD Shrink for DVD-5 movies good. Is there any othjer programs that show a difference when backuping up dvds with no compression?

rhumcafe: Thanks for a very plausible explanation of the "mute" problem in "The last samurai" copying with French audio off ! It makes sense but fortunately, this issue is only an exception rather than the norm !

I haven't tried "dvd cloner II " but as U mentioned, it sounded like it can only clone a DVD-9 movie ( no compression at all !) and use 2 DVD discs . Again, thanks for the info.

dvd cloner II can be used to compress DVD-9 to 1 dvd-r. And the quality for my picky eyes is so good. But it is not free :)

ClipsEmx, I wouldn't get all carried away with the 100% quality. SHRINK isn't really that special if no compression is needed because the entire movie is less than 4.7Ghz and fits on a single DVD. It still is good because it is free and 'unscrambles the encryption'. The best known but not the best equivalent out there would have been DVDXCopy Express before it lost its ripper. In some head to head comparisons on quality Intervideo and 1clickDVDCopy were ranked highly. Nevertheless I think most people who can easily see the difference between VHS, SVHS and DVD quality would be hard pressed to tell the difference between a movie compressed at 80% or not at all compressed done by any of the programs reviewed on Afterdawn. Your decision probably should be based more on features, speed and cost rather than on theoretical quality measured in the lab with pixels and lines of resolution. When dual layer DVD's and even more so HDTV come to home video all these slight differences we are now getting hot over will mean very little. If you find something that works for you right now, don't go looking any further.

added thought ....
I have searched some places and I dont really know why, but some people have a feedback on dvd cloner II which would give poor quality!! Also, web support is not good.

I have tried backup diehard1 6.8GB with full extras option on 1clickdvdcopy (dvd43 runs in the back). It gives 10 days and 3 copies for trial.
It is easy, 1 step, and the quality is good. it means no tiny black dots, no big pixels. Comparing to original dvd about quality (resolution) is good. It is hard to see the different under human eyes except for one thing. It seems the backup has more contrast and a little darker.
I am thinking with a devil mind :) just uninstall then re-install :):) :)
I dont know if the "rip" part which was saved to the HD can be used to burn with Nero ? I think I can.

I'm probably kind of late to add comments to this thread, but I just now read it. When I copied "The Last Samurai", I removed all languages except English AC3 5.1 and there was no problem with the audio. I did a movie only copy. If I want the extras, which I usually don't watch, I put them on a second disc. I do all of my backups this way and have never had any problem with audio except once when I deleted all of the audio tracks accidentally. Incidentally, DVD43 does remove decription from DVDs. I have it running in the background and DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter shows there is no encryption. It also allows me to use Nero Recode 2 which does not decrypt.

I experienced the same problem but I knew that the French sound track was not needed. I made another backup with the same result and then I thought perhaps I need to go into the movy's sound setup. I went into sound setup and chose English 5:1 and it worked. I tried my first disc and it too worked. This may not be what's happening to you but it's worth a try.

Sophocles: This issue is not universal ; It happened to only a few DVDs and "The last Samurai" happened to be one of them. When I removed the French audio with DVD Shrink 3.1.7 in any other DVDs, I did the same way you had done : it's the only way .

forkndave: I hate to disagree with you but DVD43 is not supposed to remove encryption. It does not even remove Macrovision. When you use SHRINK or Decrypter, both of them do remove encryption. I'm going to have to try DVD43 with Nero Recode. Now I wonder if Nero recode is able to remove encryption after the region code has been stripped. Fascinating! Maybe one of the senior members or moderators can give us their opinion on this.

siber: I hate to disagree with you but DVD43 is supposed to remove encryption.

DVD43 is a small, free tool that integrates into Windows and overrides copy-protection mechanisms found on DVD-Video discs (namely, CSS) and DVD region limitations (in case you have RPC-2 DVD drive).
This program doesn't work with Win95/98/ME.
This program doesn't remove Macrovision copy protection

I have used different programs to figure out best option for back up. Here are my observations:

Movie-KANGROO JACK

SHRINK/DVD43/DECRYPTER:Most detailed audio choices/copression.Total time 65 min.Acceptable quality on normal viewing, however shows distortion on zoom view.

NERO RECORDO2/DVD43:Detailed audio choices.Fast operation-Total time 39 min.On normal viewing, more acceptable quality than Shrink, however strangly very little distortion on zoom view(Close to original).

DVD X COPY EXPRESS(with ripper)-I click operation, little compression detail/choices.Total time 53 min.Quality not much different from Shrink or Nero recordo, however greater distortion on zoom view.

I CLICK DVD COPY/DV43-I click operation, 22%compression/Little choices.Total time 66 min.Quality not much different from Shrink or Nero recordo, however greater distortion on zoom view.

DVD CLONER II-Little ompression details/ choices.Deadly slow-Total time 116 min.Quality not much different from Shrink or Nero recordo.

INTER VIDEO DVD COPY2/DVD X GHOST OR ANY DVD(DVD 43 will not work-I click operation-works smothly. No compression details/little choices. Fastet operation-Total time 16 min. Best Quality on normal viewing-closest to original, however strangly more distortion on zoom view as compared to Nero Recordo2.

All of above observstions are for almost full disk operation. All showed more time for movie only operation except Inter video DVD Copy2(12 min). I was unable to notice any appreciable difference in video quality for movie only operation from full disk operation.

So for me Nero Recordo2 is best choice, if you own Nero 6 ulta.Otherwise Shrink/Decrypter(all free) is best choice. I have noticed in my case, Shrink works fine but there are cases when it refuses to continue(Reading/Copy protection.Nero Recordo2 was 99.9% working with combination DVD43 or DVD X GHOST.

Intervideo DVD Copy2(Trial version)-Normal viewing Video Quality-real close to original but on zoom view more distortion as compared to Nero Recordo2(Whose normal viewing quality is a little inferior).

Inter video DVD copy2-As in another thread many peoples have noticed large white blocks, I also noticed random large white block in both full disk and movie only option.BUT this was not noticed in KANGROO JACK movie. Was noticed in long movies and goreign language movies(more than 2 hrs movie). Even in these cases, normal viewing quality was best-close to original.Nero recordo was even able to produce back up of these movies with acceptable quality with out any visible defect.
