Google Chrome OS coming 'late fall'

article published on 2 June, 2010

When Google first introduced their upcoming Chrome OS last November, the company was very quiet on a timetable for the OS' release. Today, a top exec at the company has tentatively named the "late fall" as the release window for the highly-anticipated operating system. The OS will initially be designed to work on laptops and netbooks, says Sundar Pichai, Google's head of the Chrome ... [ read the full article ]

Did they just refer to websites as apps?
Sorry but why would facebook have to be make an app for it to work on the chromeOS shouldn't it just work like it does in a web brower?
Then again isn't chrome just based on a web brower, with a few extra things added on?

I don't see the point of the chromeOS why no just make android work on laptops/netbooks, its already on so much else.

Google's arrogance is astounding. They believe that anything they make or touch turns to gold..........forgetting that Midas' touch was a curse due to the inability to touch even those he loved.

This OS will fail heinously. I wouldn't touch it with a ten foot schlong.

The problem is that Google made a app-based OS for smart phones and it took off like a rocket...now they think people want a phone OS on their PC...and while I do not want this, I am not convinced that they are wrong...the general public might want an overgrown android rather than a windows PC. In fact, I think that about 95% of the world's computer users would be happier with an overgrown android than with windows.

Just think...it would be like OSX in it's reliability and ease of use, but it would be open, fast, and secure! Oh, and it would be free, allowing device makers to charge less for devices.

I think they are more or less referring to android apps. Iphone users have a myspace mobile app, and so does Android users. I think what there getting at is that myspace mobile for android, as just one example, would not have to be rewritten to be function on chrome. Same goes for the rest of the android apps.

another one of those rare occations we agree my friend.
one word could pretty much sum the ChrOS (cool name enit? ): Netbooks.with all due respect to old reliable XP and new Win7 both arent sufficient in offering what a netbook is truly all about-speed mobility reliability and most importantly, networking.
this OS seems to be the perfect solution, hopefully google can deliver same way they did with Chrome browser

Except people keep jumping on the 'ragging on Windows just because it's Windows' bandwagon. Windows is cosemtically similar to OSX in respect to it's "handful of goodies" and all the fun little extras as opposed to a stripped down OS like this Google crap will be.

Everyone should just realise and admit they like Windows and above all else.......recognize that Windows 7 is virtually flawless. From experience since it's RTM last August, I had one tiny and annoying little problem due to an update and a month later that was resolved with another update. I have had no crashes, no problems, no hiccups and no slowness what-so-ever in the past 6 months. OSX is not more stable than Windows anymore.

lissenup2-You must have a pristine Wins7 installation. I installed home premium in hopes it would run smooth and trouble free on this computer and if I liked it my other computers. It bites. Between it and AMD's tv tuners. No Outlook Express included with Wins7. Surprise. Still includes Internet Explorer. 7 freezes, locks up and lots of software isn't compatible. Bought Panda AV 2010 because it was supposed to work. Had a GOOD 2009 install. Took 3 weeks for Customer service to fix it. Haven't tried the latest Ubuntu or Mint because last Fall's didn't impress me. Windows 7 is not much better in my opinion and I won't be installing it on my other computers anytime soon. Will give Chrome a try.
