The following comments relate to this news article:
article published on 7 September, 2010
Sony has released the minor firmware update version 3.42 today, which brings nothing new to the table but blocks the use of PSGroove, the open-source jailbreaking software used to allow homebrew on the console.
If you do not update to 3.42, you cannot connect to the PlayStation Network, effectively forcing most users to update.
The jailbreak method, which involves running some code ... [ read the full article ]

Note to big companies, many wouldn't be forced to use Custom Firmware if all games were on the consoles, furthermore especially the PSP many people are forced to use Custom Firmware so most can Record their PSP Game Footage while regular users Cannot.
Custom Firmware IS NOT A BAD THING, take note of it. Custom Firmware allows us to keep the old classics alive(games that aren't on PSN,Xbox Live and Wii store) also allows what the companies epically fail to do on the Handhelds or Consoles,Are they jealous what the Consumer's create?
Plus how does this specifically have it to shut the Custom Firmware off exactly? Did they download it themselves?

I haven't updated my PS3 in a while. I actually don't use it to play games very often, I mostly use it as a media server and to play movies.
But really Sony, get your sh*t together. Make the console what the users want it to be. You'll probably make some more money. Morons.

Good to know however a tad to late i have already updated mine. I did not have a problem with updating im not cracking my systems anymore however i have an issue with this update not mentioning the changes and what it was updating. Noting that mentioning it could stop people updating their systems. I on the other hand would have liked a simple change log.

It's too late anyways, I pretty darn sure people have worked around this already or will be. As someone said, the cycle begins, and unless Sony can do a jedi mind trick telling you "You will not jb your system" with a vid of a wavy hand in front of your face, well you get what I saying, the odds are looking slim for Sony.

Personally, I want a CFW...Sony has had 4 years to get the firmware working, and we still don't have the most basic features like cross-game chat, MKV support, NTFS support, etc...the only time sony does anything with the firmware is when they are removing features or adding features designed to sell bad games.
Oh, and if the new games block the CFW, the sales will be low and these games will go strait to the cheap rack, by which time, there will be cracks for them so they work anyway.

There's no NTFS support because the system never uses it it's a lunix based OS so don't expect NTFS.
Sony could make the fileformat a lunix native one or one of their own FS and that would stuff up all these jailbreaks.
The cell isn;t jailbroken nor has it been hacked it's only a mode switch in the OS that is allow for this, sony just removes the mode switch and thus it's dead in the water.

Me and you are on the same boat man but in addition to the MKV and NTFS support I would also love a new web browser like maybe one built using the firefox source with HTML5 support because the one that we have now is pure crap. 1080p output resolution and I can't view a webpage at full screen. Whenever these things happen I will be a happy camper.

Sadly this is likely not to come out through Sony, my bet is it will be left in the dust as Sony continues to work on the PS IV. In the meantime maybe our hacker friends out there can find a way to accomplish all that.

Yes, it is a mode switch to startup in dev mode. But that's not the point. Once unsigned code can be run the backdoor is open. Now it's a matter of trying to get around and through other doors. The foot is in the door, not it's a matter of using this leeway to poke around the system.
With the semester started, I haven't really used my PS3 all that much lately anyways. So, I'm just not updating.
Doesnt expecting the unexpected make the unexpected expected and therefore mean youre expecting the expected which was the unexpected until you expected it?

MKV support maybe,
but NTFS - my question is why????? why do you want NTFS, it is used only by windows, whereas FAT32 is a universal (almost) standard, that works with windows, linux, Mac, ps3, xbox ect.
and why does everyone want cross-game chat? it is extremely distracting, its almost never used on the xbox and everyone only wants it cos the 360 fanboys do.
also somebody tell me when the last good game came out for psp. in my case, and most others, it has been rather a long while. why is this the case? because everyone hacked their psp, used pirated games, the devs didnt get enough money so they stopped trying.
are we all getting the picture here?
admittedly i would like some way for the user to run other apps on the system as a CFW would, but the effects of piracy are so much worse than not having these extra (and completely unnecessary) features.

maybe they should have a free app store, so that users can have pseudo-homebrew apps, to get most of the cfw benefits, also an ability to play backups, maybe have a cd-key sort of system like a PC game DRM. and the folder with the backups is inaccessible to the user so the game cannot be posted online for the world to get for free.

I don't think the psp's lack of good games is because of piracy. If that were the case than the 360, ds, and Wii would be suffering the same fate.

Wow, I use cross game chat all of the time, its a nice way to talk to my friends about school while we play our own games. I don't understand how distracting it can be to talk to someone, but I guess its difficult for you. You do know that people play for recreation, right? It is JUST A GAME. Anyways, Sony would have won this console war already, or at least won me, if they stuck with their product. It really is a great console, its such a shame that Sony won't add more features.

jokes, just because you can't multi-task doesn't mean everyone else can't as well, and who says it's almost never used on the 360? i use it all the time, so do all my friends, and friends of my friends, you can look at your friends list and you'll see that everyone is in parties all the time.
don't assume that your way is the correct way.

but with the 360, ds and wii, it is not the majority of people that hack their consoles and play pirate games, and are all much more popular consoles, so most of the people will get the actuall games to play. you are welcome to enlighten me to a more plausible theory as to why the psp, being a more powerful console than the ds, gets less good games than it.
also the 360 needs to be unaltered to pass the Ms scan (as far as i know) which is needed to play online which many people do.

i never said that my way is the correct way, none of my friends bar a select few use cross-game chat, i dont use it, and from other forums i gathered most other people dont use it aswell. and i would rather just play my game instead of talking to people. in my opinion, if u really want to talk to someone then go see them and speak.

So?..... It's called choice grandma.

Jeez, that didn't take long. Sony with it's army of programmers might likely stay effectivly ahead of any workarounds. One week it works, for the next two weeks it doesn't.
Isn't Phony able to force the updates on users by placing them on new game releases?

it does matter because it can be altered easily by sony.
because it's a Linux based os you could simply come up with your own file system only for the ps3, lock down only signed official files for any other file system or have devs alter their old game files to suit the new system.
all new games released could use this new file system and thus buying any new game would require a new update and you wouldn't be able to burn or make copies because the filesystem would be unknown.
The current jailbreak was made because someone released all the sony dev stuff onto the net, otherwise none of this would have happened.
people saying they made up their own code are probably BSing anyway, even GeoHotz code doesn't jailbreak a PS3 it does nothing really, bar peek and poke.

no. you see, the majority of DS users have not hacked their console, unlike the majority of PSP users who have. the majority of unhacked consoles mean a large amout of game sales for the DS, the majority of hacked consoles mean a large amount of pirate game downloads for the PSP.
the majority of unhacked consoles mean the game companies are much more likely to make a profit on ds games than psp games as the majority of the particular fanbase who actually pay for the game is much larger. again, is there a more plausible reason? if so please enlighten me
