Thanks to a Japanese forum poster, we now have concrete evidence that Sony is at least considering creating a peripheral that would give PlayStation 3 owners a way to play their PS2 games.
The new patent filed by Sony Computer Entertainment Japan shows off a "Compatibility Adapter," a peripheral that contains necessary parts to playback PS2 games, but will work when attached to a PS3.

Figures they would now try and bring the feature back now that the console has been hacked.

It might be a bit more than a piece of code; the emotion engine may be old, but it is still a lot more complex than the newest teensy++.

Erm, I know a LOT of people who still want to play PS2 games, myself included. Saying that "there can't be that many people who still want to play PS2 games" is a gross generalization and is wholly untrue.

Actually, there is no official word on this being released; sony is simply showing us all that they could do it if they wanted to, but refuse to because people would like that...and Sony refuses to bow to the desires of their customers.

again its the old story of those in control that could do something that would apeal to the masses like being able to play our old ps2 games on the ps3 but at a cost they ( proved it was do-able from the start then they dropped it when it became an issue but they dont want homebrew to work well it sounds like sony needs to make a choice either provide the end user with what they want at a cost to that end user (which most will pay) or alow homebrew to be used either way everyone will get to play their games I have rebuilt my ps2 3 or 4 times already and I own around 40 games I just dont want them to become costers or throw them on ebay for nothing more then a few bucks as a trade off of being a loyal supporter of sony and the ps* line.... sony should really rethink thier stand on this befor everyone feels that a WII or xbox is a better choice..

I also have the old one as well for 3 years now and has never had any problems at all. But I'm not one of the people who want to play ps3 games on mine.

<i>there cannot be too many people still wanting to play PS2 games out there, especially as the console reaches the very end stages of its life. </i>
One of the most idiotic statements ever.

PS3 has HDMI support, i don't even have a tube tv in my house anymore. makes it difficult for me to play my PS2 as YPbPr never worked without the adapter at least for me it didnt.

According to marketing polls, only around 15% of PS3 owners and prospective owners really cared about PS2-compatibility...which was likely the biggest nail in its coffin before.

Exactly right, and I can almost guarantee that those numbers are even lower now. The only gross generalization is thinking that because you and your friends want to play PS2 games on the PS3 that 35 million other owners do, as well.

That is just the thing..."Only 15%"...only about 5% care about 3D bluray support, but they include that. Only about 0.5% wanted a second link to the PSN store, but there it is. Only about 80% want cross-game-chat, and we still don't have it.
In the US alone, there were over 10 million fat PS3s sold...for this one portion of their market, "only 15%" is 1.5 million people. That is more than the population of some small countries, just from the sales of the fat in one large country. Sony chooses to call them insignificant...and when they take away the features you like, they will call you insignificant too.

To echo a strong sentiment, I couldn't care less about 3D.
While backwards compatability and x-game chat would be nice, what I'd really like to see is a web browser which doesn't make me want to throw the controller at the TV! Surely Sony could farm out the redevelopment of of the current pile of donkey crap to someone like Mozilla or Google (Google search is already intergrated in the XMB), then i could go back to web browsing in the comfort of my living room rather than hidden away in the home office.

I rather play the remastered collections, like God of War I and II and the upcoming ICO and Shadows of the Colossus collection. For one, the collections are remastered in HD and the second reason is that the collections have trophies support.
Peace!

Ah cute ZippyD :)
Yeah whatever, for some reasons, I get high when I hear the plinking sound of the trophies. Unlocking the elusive platinum trophy is total awesomeness. Okay, that sounds like a total dork, lol. But I'm enjoying my games with trophies/achievements. Think of this way, at least I'm not on drug... Oh wait, that didn't come out right, lol.
Peace!

True... not all trophies/achievements are meaningful. There's absolutely no reason to hate them though, even if you don't collect any at all. The wording of some trophies/achievements are funny as hell, it's like free little side jokes come with the game if you want to look at it that way. Metal Deer Solid in Cabela games, isn't that cute :)
Peace!
