'Star Wars' films to be re-released in 3D starting in 2012

20th Century Fox and Lucasfilms are set to re-release Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace in February, 2012, this time in converted 3D.
George Lucas, the man behind Star Wars, says releasing the film early in the year and not during the summer blockbuster season will give the movie a chance to run at the box office.

Really? converted to 3D? wow... shame, besides that most tv already do that. Even then 3D movies now are shittty only couple is worth watching cause they were made with 3D in mind and not just gimmick, the conversion should not be pretty, i'm subject to be wrong though, just my 2 cents.

I still don't understand what the big deal w/ 3D is...it's mostly the same as it was ~30 years ago, except that they can make special effects look better (since it's mostly CGI). I guess the AVATAR camera system makes it look more natural, though, so it could get even better.
"Dr. Tongue's 3D House of Pancakes" is good enough for me. ;-)

When Avatar came out the deal was that 3d made the CGI look better because CGI typically looks flat, no matter how good it is and the 3d helped with that issue.
And I tend to agree...
Adding it after the fact to something that has no need for it?
Yeah, I don't think so.
I'm looking forward to a 1080p version of Star Wars... But who gives a flying eff about 3d?

Is there any format that Star Wars has not been released on? It was a good film in its day so try to get over it and move on. This is just another attempt to milk the customers of their money or do we have to see the Black and White Version, the Mirror Image Version, the Klingon Version, Star Wars meets the Muppets version or Star Wars does Uranus.
Could there possibly be other versions or formats that need milking?

ewll what they should do is a the special editions with all the effects being re redone in CGI then the 3D applied to the CGI

Here's a crazy idea... Allow a talented director to direct new movies set in the Star Wars universe! I know it's crazy, but I think Star Wars KOTOR and KOTOR 2 had far better stories, characters, and ideas than any of the 6 movies.

I dunno but if you look at acting trends most actors these days are actors in name and fame only.Classical training? Character training? Bah who needs it....
It seems most actors have a set one or 2 character limit and even then the script has to be really really good for them not to suck.
Th original star wars had charm the new ones had alot of the charm removed by the worse writing and acting.

Another case of the film studios scratching around for yet another pointless novelty to con you into parting with your money.
Just how are the classic films 'improved' with 3D?
Avatar was an exception, a $500 million effects budget exception.
Stuffing films through the 3D-ification machine has so far been horrible (Alice & Clash of the Titans, anyone?).
Just like colorisation was unnatural, weird & thoroughly horrible on classic b&w movies.
Perhaps they've twigged that an excellent high quality Blu-ray transfer alone won't bring the sales in and so they feel they have to mess around with this crap?

Agree with all, it's an attempt at a money grab and not at all going to improve the classic SW set.
All the 3D crap coming out (except Avatar) seem to think we need things thrown at our faces or jumping out at us to entertain us. I don't know about you guys, but I don't find that entertaining at all, it's a gimmick that kids may enjoy but I prefer an engaging script and acting over stuff flying at my grill.
Avatar had the right idea for 3D as an immersive visual experience, but the latest crop of 3D simply follows the SCTV script with John Candy mocking 3D..."Anyone for Pancakes"...(loved SCTV!)

Basically it doesn't do the same thing colour did for peeps back in 1939 and subsequent years when it was rolled out and made big!!!!
Now holographic television, that might be worth it!!!!!

Why does Lucas do this? Because he will sell millions to idiots who don't know any better and have much more money than they deserve.
And, I just realized that he's doing them out of order. Skipping the originals and releasing the bastard children first.

Hey guys, this is America. George Lucas has every right to do what ever he wants with his movies. He has contributed a lot to the film industry. I mean how many other movies are made today with help from his ILM (Industrial Light and Magic tech labs. Love him or hate him, he has his secured his place in film history. Anybody who knows about THX also knows that it's another Lucas creation. I personally will enjoy lightsaber battles and the Death Star trench run in 3-D.

Yeah, I don't think anyone is saying he doesn't have the right to do it... only that it would be nice if he quit rehashing his success with an old franchise and use that very inventive brain of his to make something NEW that we'll WANT to watch.
There is no doubt that George Lucas is a brilliant man who has contributed a huge amount to the film industry. That's great.
But why remake something that's already done? Do something new and original...
LIKE STAR WARS WAS, ORIGINALLY.
Why is American Graffiti and Star Wars so successful?
Because they were new and original. They were the FIRST of their kind. Even Lucas says it himself in his "making of American Graffiti" <paraphrase> "It is successful because it is innovative and takes a chance. It would not be so successful if it was not."
Remaking Star Wars by running it through some algorithm to give it 3D effects is not new or original and is certainly not innovative.
It is merely another way to sell the same thing to more people.
Greed. Not artistic. Sell-Out. Typical Hollywood.
Hence, the dislike and even outright hatred.

Absolutely true, if people wouldn't by the crap we wouldn't continue to get more crap. Unfortunately people have become more brain washed and even those who complain about the crap watch the crap, how about that for hypocrisy.
I can see why people liked Avatar in 3D, that movie stunk so bad that anything could have helped it.
3D's functional basis to deliver is exactly as it was on its inception over 50 years ago. It has been implemented many times over those years and failed every time with some law suits ensuing do to Epileptic seizures. I have two different eras of 3D expensive gear from gimmick drives. All I can say is I was young and dumb obviously to get drawn into that gimmick but it won't happen this time around. If they can come up with a plausible way to deliver 3D that doesn?t require special glasses, sitting in the sweet spot, or medical problems then I?m all in, but not until then!
