Does anyone know if when you get a dual layer burner if you could still use dvd shrink or is he going to have to redo the program? I am thinking of getting one here soon but i dont use dvdxcopy. I only use shrink.

Shrink won't need any changes since it doesn't burn on it's own not to mention with a DL disc there won't be any need for compression.

For DL, DVD Decrypter would suffice for ripping the disc and then something such as Nero 6 that has DL capability to burn the files.

If you're using Decrypter to burn through Shrink, then it's a matter of if/when the author of Decrypter decides to add DL support.

It will be nice to have the Double Layer option. The Sony DRU700 is an 8X DVD+/-R burner with DL capacity. I think that in the end - especially if you are like a lot of us just interested in the movie minus all the other 'extra's' - you will continue to use SHRINK to fit a 5-5.5 Gb movie on a regular 4.4 Gb DVD for less than $1 MOST of the time.

On the rare occasion where you'll need 7-8.5 Gb for a 3-4 hour epic (Return Of The King), you may be willing to spend $8-10 for a DVD/Double Layer. Not cheap...

I have decided to just purchase those movies that are too long to compress rather than try and back them up. Just be careful not to scratch or damage those precious discs that are too long to back up or you will be buying them again.

Overall, it just isn't worth it currently to bother with a dual layer drive and media because the discs are so expensive and the movies that when stripped require massive compression are so few.

One aside to this: I bought 'The Return Of The King' which is a 200 minute movie. As a test, I used DVD Rebuilder with CCE Basic to rip, compress and burn on a DVD+R. Absolutely excellent results. I watched the movie on a 45 inch HDTV-ready screen. Just glorious. I'm not sure how much I will be using Double Layer. Maybe to record 8 Divx movies, like the collected works of Adam Sandler...
