Went to burn my second movie using shrink, 1st movie was easy and flawless. Now I'm trying to do Last Samarai and getting error messages. I get failed to read E: drive Copy protection error, the read failed because the sector was encrypted. How do I back up this DVD? Any help would be appreciated.

Use DVD Decrypter which is also a free program and can be downloaded from this site:)
hope this helps you out!

Hi there lodin, Welcome to our little Club -

Begin by playing your DVD with your PC?s player. Play for at least a minute then open your DVD Shrink, CloneDVD, DVD X Copy or your weapon of choice - as soon as you begin your rip turn off your player so it doesn?t interfere. The playing before hand is only so that your ripping program can ?Find? your DVD.

Should that not work, Download DVD Decrypter and rip the DVD in the "File" mode.

http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_rippers/dvd_decrypter.cfm

HINT:
I create a folder on my Desktop named " All DVD Work" and before ripping my DVD?s I create another sub-folder with the name of the movie I'm backing up. (i.e. ?All DVD Work\Pirates of the Caribbean.?)

THEN,

Open DVD Shrink and find your folder using the browser in "Open Files." DVD Shrink will load it up and then you may continue as normal -

Cheers,

Pete

Now I've backed up the last samarai and burned a DVD-R using Decrypter and also backed up using shrink 3.1 and burned another DVD-R using decrypter.....now my DVD player gives me a message saying cannot read this type of disk. I don't understand because the last movie was so simple using shrink and burning a DVD-R and my DVD player which is a Pioneer had no problems reading the DVD-R, any ideas what could be causing this headache? Why it would work fine for one movie and now impossible for this movie?

Me thinks it's your media -

Time to update to the "Good Stuff."

Do a search for "Good Stuff" at Afterdawn, click on the second "Hit" on the first "Newbie" site listed -

Now again have tried burning this movie with Sony DVD -R with no luck. I tried backing up 2 other movies with shrink and burn with decrypter. Both movies went through perfect and plays fine on my dvd player. The last samarai appears to go through the motions of backing up with shrink, I can see the images, then it appears to have a file in my HDD I go to burn it and it appears to burn but then I have a blank DVD with no movie, file is blank, so I'm at my wits end. Any other ideas on why this would happen?

When you rip with Decrypter are you ripping in ISO mode? Decrypter can only burn an image file. If you want to rip amd burn in file mode or, IFO mode the you might want to look at Nero for burning.

And I might want to pay more attention to type-os.

loodin,

We might have a communication problem,

Searching for "Good Stuff" will not result in the name "Sony" being recommended. I gave you very precise instructions to take you to the correct thread AND post. Following them EXACTLY should have been no problem.

Sony ranks in the C- to D+ as media - and is mentioned as media to not be used. Did you have trouble reading or understanding the post ?

The answer was there -

Pete

Here is a link leading to a post made by our fealess administrator listing various media by quality. Sony has a great reputation with TVs and video cameras but their media is less than it could be.

Sohpocles- My last steps taken for success and failure have bean to backup with shrink I do the ISO feature, then go to back up. After that I get the image preview until it launches me into Decrypter at which point I do the ISO W and then it starts burning the movie.

Pete- Not a communication problem, I beleive an assumption problem. You assume I haven't taken your advice and looked up "good stuff" when, in fact, I have a 25 pack of Ritek's on the way. I look forward to trying them and seeing if they make a difference. My problem though, the other 3 movies work with the sony DVD-R so I assume the last samarai should equally be successful. Why would some movies work fine and this one not? Either way, I appreciate your advice and will try it once it arrives. I can back up and burn another movie now and it will work fine, some reason this one won't allow me.

You are correct, I jumped too soon - I apologize -

When I suggested ?Good stuff? and you were surprised that Sony didn?t work, it?s what threw me -

When we recommend media, we consider consistent quality. Sony?s quality is neither good nor consistent - Not being even a constant D+ can be counted upon so burning could never be predicted. I would be much more concerned with it?s life cycle -

There may possibly be other reasons for your problems but before we can determine anything else we need to eliminate media as the problem -

Memorex is a good example as media goes, figures as high as 50% coasters have been reported (One member bought a stack of 50 and got 23 good burns.), not what I would call an impressive record. 4 different companies manufacture Memorex BTW and the quality varies widely as you might imagine. Easy to see now why the quality of a big-named company can?t be trusted -

experiencing a little lag are we Pete?

Memorex wouldn't be my first choice for media, too many reported failures.
