Check the ide controllers transfer rate, be certain that they are set at DMA if available.. Heres how.
Go to Device manager> IDE ATAPI controllers>
Check the 1st and secondary IDE controller. One at a time, please.
This is how.
Double click the 1st IDE controller, now under the advanced tab,
be sure the transfer mode is at DMA if available.
If not, change it to that.
Do the same for the 2nd controller.
Then reboot. Now check and see that it took by going back into Device Manager.
If this doesnt change the transfer mode to DMA, then you will have to uninstall the IDE controllers.
Right click the IDE controllers and left click uninstall.
Also uninstall your burner using the same method, right click the burner and left click uninstall.
You can do this for both. Then reboot. Xp will automatically reinstall them and this should fix the slow burn issue.
I already checked dma, and it is set to the following:
Primary IDE Channel (Hard Drive)
Transfer mode: DMA if available
Current Transfer mode: Ultra DMA Mode 5
Secondary IDE Channel (Burner)
Transfer Mode: DMA if available
Current Transfer mode: Ultra DMA Mode 2
I havent tried uninstalling the burner as yet.
Im very interested in knowing what transfer rate others get when reading a dvd to there hard drive using DVD Shrink and what system specs they have. Burning is fine, and sits at 4x, its just the read that i think seems a little slow.

Since you're using a burner that's about right. Your burner is locked to only rip DVD-Video at 2x. I don't believe there's any hacked firmware available for it, but there is a trick that works to get 4x rips with DVD Decrypter if you time it right. Insert the disc and wait for Decrypter to recognize it. Once the arrow (start) button turns green, immediately eject the disc and then put it back in. If you time it right you can get 4x rips.
A much better solution is to get a good DVD-ROM drive. I use a Lite-On 166S which rips single layer discs at 12x and dual layer discs at 6x.
I agree with vurbal about the Lite-On. I bought one for me and one for a birthday present for my newbie friend. His rips are 3-4 minutes faster than mine :( He's averaging about 12-14 minutes for rips with Shrink.
Of course his computer isn't clogged up with thirty DVD programs either.
The 166S is a great ROM, I got them at Newegg. About 30-35 dollars I think.
Sony DRU-510AK reads at 12x out of the box, averages around 7-8x.
As of last week there were no firmware cracks available.
I have basically the same setup as mo'badass, ripping with DVD Decrypter is done at average 7.5x, but file still needs encoding
Ripping/encoding with shrink gives the same (2,700kbs)
and takes around 1 hour from rip to burn (often less/ more if using deep analysis)
