Chrome surpasses Firefox in browser market share

article published on 3 January, 2012

According to the latest data from StatCounter, Google's Chrome browser has finally surpassed Firefox, as Internet Explorer continues its gradual drop in global market share. As of the new year, Internet Explorer (in all iterations) fell under 40 percent for the first time ever, to 38.65 percent. Chrome increased 1.58 percentage points to 27.27 percent, overtaking Firefox at 25.27 percent. ... [ read the full article ]

Given that I can have Mozilla turn off Google's "I'm watching your every move" logging function, I'll never use Chrome for that very reason.

Granted, I know I can't escape it entirely, but it's nice to know I can get away from the bulk of it.

As for IE & Safari... well, we all know why they are even still around. Albeit through CPR & a defibrillator on several occasions.

Firefox completely bloated out its product - I used it for probably around three years, until it ended up taking huge amounts of time to use the browser and open it...it was ridiculous. The speed at which Chrome operates is amazing to me, and with no bloatware.

If Google wants to watch me and hold on to my information, I say let them. Hasn't given me any problems so far...you never hear about credit card numbers being stolen from Google.

I'm not worried about my credit cards. 1., I don't have any, 2., I was more worried about the happyhooters'dot'com that may come back to bite me in the ass when the divorce lawyers hunt me down...

I figured that's what Incognito Mode is for.

CRAP!!! Chrome has a button for that!!! Or did my dumb ass just fall for the old "they decided to remove gullible from the dictionary" bit again?

Not sure I'm understanding you...but Chrome does have a "record nothing" Incognito Mode, or at least that's how I understand it.
Ctrl + Shift + N in Chrome will open it.

I think the numbers may be a bit skewed, as I'm a user that frequently uses both FF and Chrome. If I need to hop on and get something quick, Chrome is my gateway, but I still favor my bloated FF, loaded with web developer add-ons and other widgets that block ads and other garbage. For that reason, FF will still be my choice, though I even end up using IE and Safari on occasion, just to make sure the websites I develop work! (And for that, I hate you IE!)

I've used every major desktop web browser, and my favorites are Chrome and Firefox. I do like Chrome more than Firefox though; I agree with everyone here that FF has become way too bloated in the past few years. As far as enterprise integration, developer tools and every other thing that Chrome can't do very well, I really don't care at all. I use my web browsers, for browsing the web...nothing else.

FF is way to slow and lacks support for more sites than any other browser I've used and I've used most out there. I would say with exception to the hard core cult followers, which I see we have some here, that FF has shot themselves in the foot and could be done if they don't wise up soon.

I won't use them anymore and rely on IE8, Avant, and Chrome these days for my surfing. Chrome needs to make a lot of improvements though before they get my full usage, the only reason I use them is fast page loading, spell checker, and AdBlockerPlus support. Their Favorites are handled extremely poor as well as some other issues.
