Ok, I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed, I admit it but I've been burning nothing but coasters (3 good out of 26 - I never quit). Found Pete's guide (he really is a genius) and followed it to the tee using Shrink with hopes of burning with Decrypter. My DVD player and recorder are the same unit, external USB connected. As shrink begins to run analysis it pauses and I get an error - cyclic redundancy or something like that. Read about the fat 32 problem and wondered if that applies to me even though I am using XP. I just want to copy my DVD's (sob, sob)- can anybody help? By the way, I'm a recipe reader so if it's instructions lay it out to me 1, then 2, then 3. If we can work this out you know I will build a shrine to you Guys (and/or Gals) right after the coaster roast in my back yard. Mucho Gracias in advance!

If I'm remembering correctly, "cyclic redundancy" errors are usually due to poor media. Are all 23 coasters from the same batch of discs? You might try a higher quality brand. (BTW, some of us also started with RW media because of the coaster problem!)
BTW, I also have XP and an external Sony DRX-530UL burner --the only coasters I've burned recently have been media-related. So try a new brand of disc to see if you get any better results.
You might also try the following:
- Download DVD43 (a free program) -- it gets rid of the copy protection so takes care of the occasional disc that Shrink can't read.
- Use Decrypter first to rip the whole DVD to your hard drive (no matter how large); then use Shrink to compress as needed -- choose "open files" to open the video_ts folder that Decrypter created (if you ripped in file mode), then Shrink will analyze/encode as if that were the original disc, then tell Shrink to back up & choose ".iso file" and tell it what to name it; then go back to Decrypter to burn the shrunk .iso file. This, too, might take care of problems Shrink is having with the original disc.
Hope this helps. If you need more info, please make your questions as specific as possible. And don't get too stressed about the coasters ... we've all made 'em! Good luck!
Karen H.--Dell Optiplex GX240, P4 1.50ghz, 256mb RAM (yeah, I need more), Windows XP Pro w/SP1, 80gb c: drive (replaced the 20gb c: that crashed), 126gb i: drive, 124gb j: drive, 500gb external hard drive partitioned into k: and l: drives, Sony DDU1621/C1 DVD-ROM to rip/encode, Sony DRX-530UL to burn, new Sony DRX-840U to burn DL discs ... need a new computer to go with it!!

Quote: I get an error - cyclic redundancy
Dirty or scratched source disc. Have a look, if no scratches try cleaning it.

FAT32 problems... limits you to files under 4GB, so more often you wouldn't be able to use Decrypter to burn. Decrypter will only burn ISO's, and most dvd-9's compressed into an ISO are usually 4.35GB.
To check your file system ... Open my computer, right click your local disk and click properties.

What brand of media are you using? And when you say coasters, do they play on your pc at least?

Was Pete's guide not good enough? How about posting the steps you are using?

I am using Maxell DVD+R. They burn at 4x. I followed Karen's advice and did not get the error reading but my DVD player gives an incorrect disk (this was the usual error I got before I found Pete's guide) reading on screen. The steps I used on Pete's guide was as he wrote but I never got to burning. At about 38% into shrink analyizing the disk I got the Cyclic redundancy error message. My TV DVD player takes the following formats: DVD video (both formats) Video CDs (compact disc digital video audio cds. It will play CD-R and CD-RW. The three dvd's that I did get to record and play have fantastic quality and I can't recall if I did anything different to get them to work. Currently I am using decrypter to rip the video into a file on the C drive. Then I use Shrink to shrink the file to another folder on my desktop called "shrunk". Then decrypter burns the file to the DVD. My C drive is NTFS according to what I read under it's properties. I know it may be important for my disks to play on my computer but I don't know if they do because I will never watch them on my computer so I haven't tried that. One thing that I did notice was that when the file was saved by Decrypter onto the hard drive it was listed as a Winrar file. I don't know if this matters or not but when I clicked "open with" and used shrink it seemed to work OK. Anyway, any ideas on where to proceed from here? By the way my TV/DVD combo unit is a Toshiba MD20FNI. I do have Pinnacle Instant write installed and Nero and Neostandard. So, what should I try next?

Rawzero, If you're using a zip file, you must extract it 1st, then use that file to re-author/compress and then burn.
GO VOLS !

I thought this might be the case. I've gone back in and disabled my winrar compressor from working on all files except .zip and .rar files. I will begin from scratch tonight and let evryone know what happens. I really don't think this should be this difficult, but, like I said, I not well versed in the art of DVD recording - I am getting smarter though. Thanks everyone and I will keep trying.
