I'm a newbie to dvd copying and hence learned from my search for suitable software that dvd shrink kicks ass. Now I have backed-up a few movies with it having no problems, then all of a sudden now it stopped working. I will inseert the dvd as usual with the dvdr+ media, but unlike before it takes forever to run. Meaning i insert the disc into the drive and a window will pop up indicating what drive do I want to open. This used to take no time at all, but now it takes quite awhile. Then once I get passed open disc part I set up what Parts I want (typically only english)and then hit back-up. Now unlike before in just going straight to the back up options, my computer just runs, runs, and runs. It does not freeze, it just states dvd shrink is not responding and so when I ctrl-alt-del to end task and shut it down it takes forever to shut down and I mean forever with the dvd shrink window almost never going away (the window just stays there). Now from this it takes again forever for my computer to turn off. If I try to run something else say explorer it will not run, the mouse does the sanddial thing but then stops and nothing. I cant run anything after this if I leave my computer on. I never really had this trouble before and am confused as what to do.
MY computer hardware is:
Amd athlon 2.2gh 64fx-51
radeon 256mb
1000gb Ram
Windows XP
Iomega dual dvd burner
I guess anyone have a clue as to what the hell is going on?
oh before i forget, new to this forum thing also. I only have the demo version of Nero, do I need to actually order Nero for it to work again?
Posted this before but dont know if i did it right, new to the forum thing.

Sounds to me like your computer is clogged up with crap. Try closing everything in the toolbar and getting rid of it in the startup menu. Re-boot, and try again. If you need help with the start up menu, give a shout back. Also if you do a lot of net surfing, clean out all the cookie files and run adware 6.0 to clean your registry. You can do a google search under lavasoft-adware and find this free program to download. If all else fails, un-install shrink and re-load it. Good luck!

Define quite awhile... depending on the OS settings and the drive it can take up to 1 minute. If its significantly long then there's something up.

I dont think so. TMK the demo is just a timebombed version of the full thing.
Have a look at the processes running in the background, which is taking up the CPU. Also, could this be a DMA/PIO issue? :)

Quote: 1000gb Ram
Holy S***!!! 1,0000gb's of RAM ... That'a alot!!! :) j/k
One other thing you can try is to defrag your HD. And when you backup make sure you run no other applications. As Pete says "Step away from the computer".

All sound advice. Sounds like my PC after I've been on a surfing safari around the net. Lot's of junk gets picked up by the system and will slow it down. Some malicious. Sounds like you may not be doing your routine maintenace. I would advise a system clean up and the routine maintenace.
Hopefully you have some nice optional software to clean up your system. First though, go into the control panel, open internet options. Under the general tab, clear cookies, delete files, and clear history. You have just removed a ton of junk, if not done before.
The Ad Aware6 by lavasoft is one of the best, so follow that advice, you can get it at Cnet as well as Lavasoft. Spy Sweeper by Webroot is another excellent program. I use them both, as one sometimes gets things the other misses. You'll be surprised if you haven't used adware and spyware removal before. These 2 play well together without problems, can't say that for others. They don't hit you with adware like some of the other free stuff does. Funny thing, Microsoft bundled some adware for you as a starter, use these progs and you'll be able to clear it as well.
Make sure all your anti virus info is up to date. Run the anti virus for a complete system scan. Norton has some trialware at times so there might be a good place to check. Their internet security has some good options and their systemsworks has as well. Just a thought, haven't checked their site in a while and not sure of their trials. McAffee is another big name. Then there is Black Ice ... the list goes on.
There are a number of registry tools. If you have one run it to make sure your registry is clean and functioning properly. If not there are trial versions you can use. Some of those can be found on CNet and ZDnet and I'm sure if you ask, a lot of folks will make suggestions.
Have you updated your windows with Windows Update? If not, update your system.
Defragging that hard drive may be an idea, especially with all the above action and if you haven't done it in a while. We all seem to forget that one on occasion. I know, some feel it isn't necessary on some systems (heading off the disagreement before it starts).
Now that your system is cleaned up, do you still have the problem? Not to fear, you have caught up on your routine maintenance and eliminated a lot of possible problems in the process. Run those anti virus scans and adware scans at least once a week if you haven't already been doing it.
Don't forget to clear the waste basket (recycle bin).

Hey Flip, I think there must have been 3 too many 0s or a g where an m should have been. 2GB RAM is a big kid on the block. That 256 mb Radeon sounds like a graphics card. What I'd like to know is how large is the hard drive and how much free space is available. Preferrably at least 15 GB and not less than 10 to 12 GB.
@weadmd
What is the HD (hard drive) size and free space and what is the amount of RAM on this system?
That Nero trial is for 30 days, if you want to keep it past that point, you have to purchase it.

Yea I know, but I couldn't help myself :-). He probably meant 1000mb's, which truely would be 1024mb's(1GB).

I agree .... take a look at this thread:
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/93229 (guy thinks he can backup with 2-3GB's of free space)

As you can see some of us here can count? We even own calculators! But I knew that you meant 1000 megs, because you knew your card had 256 megs. Only a few careless people would buy a card with that much Ram and no purpose, which suggests a reasonable understanding of its technologies.'

oops, lol yes I did mean 1gb, sorry! Oh and my hd is 120 gb, but it is partitioned into 3 components meaning I believe I have 2 47gb and 1 20gb approx. Well I used the spyware and adware which cleaned a lot of shit out for me. I stil had problems so will take the advice and defrag my hd and other maintenance issues. I did however try using the DVD Shrink in one of the 47gb partitions with nothing on it and it worked fine. I think I forgot to clean out left over movies. One question though (and it maybe retarded) does DVD Shrink store that analysis when you first put the dvd in and if so where does it store it?

oops sorry only have 1gb of RAM and have a hd partitioned into 3 sections 2 of 47gb and 1 of 20gb. Used the spyware and adware advice and cleaned a crap load of crap from my system. I will also defrag now and tell you how it went. In the meantime though I use 1 of the 47gb partitions strictly for DVD Shrink and it worked fine. Any suggestions on why? Was it a space issue maybe? Well I'll inform you how it went and thanks a lot for the advice!!!!!!!!!!

Dead on, you have to have the free space to work, but keep up the maintenance schedule. Video takes a lot of memory and computers often become cluttered which slows down the process.

Hey Sophocles, how'd you know, it does get foggy here on the river. Just kidding, we were just playing with no harm intended. We had a good idea it was 1GB RAM.
Like a lot of cases, free space was the issue. I have found it best to get those system resource questions answered up front, especially with newbies. They're hit with all the things they need to know and don't always see what is in front of them. It can be confusing in the beginning. I know I got confused a few times, still do.

Hey weadmd,
I had to do heaps of homework on dumping & burning.....heaps, thanks to various errors.
Do your cleanout religiously like the guys said. Space can become a big problem so clean out what u don't need. Also make sure your IDE's in the BIOS and Device Manager are DMA enabled and update your drivers for everything.
Anyway you asked if Shrink saves that analysis it does at the start, yes it does, it's a 1kb file located somewhere like this -
C:\Documents and Settings\weadmd\Application Data\DVD Shrink
You can delete the contents of the folder but if you want to dump & burn something that has already been decoded but deleted, Shrink will re-run the analysis. Oh yeah, you have to agree to the Terms & Con's again the first time you open it.
Oh well, Good luck, it's a lot of trial and almost as much error but worth it in the end.
I know I mess around with it too much, it's my computer!!

Possibly on your PC, but Shrink sure didn't put anything in an App folder for me at that location. In fact that folder doesn't exist in my Documents and Settings under my name. It's hid in a different folder, All Users. For each individual looking for that file, it would be best to put application data in the search and locate the folder with DVD Shrink in it. That's how I located it. Depends on how many users the OS has. You are right about the files existence though. And the size varies, I have one 7KB file in there.

Ok geekgirl, wher on device manager is dma enable? I see a check by ide, but unsure about the dma thing. I went my bios and enabled dma, but it also asked for a time? Should i put to fastest time? I set it at the mid range which was 320ns. I also enabled ecc in bios, Should I have done that? My computer though still is continously cycling, it seems to never stop, but what its cycling I dont know? I can just hear it keep going (if you know what i mean) like its processing something non-stop. My computer though was acting up for it seems to have a problem executing programs at times. For example this morning explorer would not open up, and if I cliked on something else to run like symantec it would open up and i would try a scan, but then it would sort of freeze by not responding anymore. Its just f'ed up. I cant figure out whats the problem for I defrged my harddrive already and everything else suggested. Its odd though for in task manager ill look at CPU usage and it will say 0%, but I still cant access shit. Heres an example of what the error why it would not respond or run I guess:
szAppName-UPC32.exe
szAppVer:8.10.825
szModName:hungapp
szModVer:0.0.0.0
offset:00000000
and then what the error report contains as it sends it to MS. I dont know wtf to do. I just ordered and 1gb of RAM (meaning I'll have 2gb of Ram) in hopes that maybe, just maybe that may help. I'm pretty sure though that RAMS not an issue. Anyways any idea on what to do
