hi there,
i have used dvd shrink to burn dvd movies onto a single dvd-r disc, and they all work great.
QUESTION ??? can u use dvd shrink to copy/burn a pc game disc onto a blank dvd-r disc and it will play or run in a pc (just like the original disc does)
i was thinking that rather than use nero to copy or burn discs, u could use shrink the same way and overcome some of the hassles or security encryptions that exist on original game discs etc.
any advice or help appreciated.....GLEN
if shrink is no good for straight out copy and burn (other than dvd movies) then what is the best software to use to enable a perfect copy/burn of pc or ps2 game discs so they will play ???

yo glenpinn,
i forget if it works with ps2 (it might!) but for pc game copies Alcohol 120% is awesome. it's a super easy prog but lots of config options too and it also has disk drive emulation for up to like 32 virtual drives. it has lots of the same funtions as Nero, only does them better, but you still need Nero for all the stuff the Alcohol doesn't do...

hi turkey.
just got a copy of the trial alcohol 120 from the software section here, will have a better loook tonight. looks nice, very well laid out and has lots of functions, but ill test it tonite and try to burn a ps2 and a pc game and see what happens.
i think my bro told me that alcohol still has problems getting around security encryptions on original discs, is this correct ??? and if so, i guess theres nothing u can do about it.
anyway, thanks for your input, ill give it a go.....thanks again.....GLEN

alcohol 120% will do exactly what you need it to do, it can copy movies from DVD to DVD-R on the fly (does this with CDs too). if you had a dual layer DVD burner, you might never use DVDShrink ever again. however you might need additional software to do it.

When copying PS2 games, make sure you burn them at the slowest speed possible. That way they`ll be more compatible with the PS2, a lot easier to be read be the console. I`ve burnt mine with a speed lower than 2x and all copies play without problems.

hi there.
i have a sony dru700a dual layer burner, but cant get media for it, i can, but cost $20au each for 1 disc and im not spending that sort of money on media unless im doing a professional videography job for a client, cos they get billed for the discs, and its an expensive loss if u stuff it up.
i tried alcohol a while ago to burn a copy of toca race driver 2, and it wont play, which is what i was told anyway.
ill stick to buying the odd original pc game for all the hassles, and i tried to copy spiderman2 ps2 game using shrink, but no good, wont even get past reading the disc cos of some encryption thing.
alcohol will only copy/burn dvd movies on the fly ??? well ill stick to dvd shrink, im not a fan of copying on the fly.
shrink is a brilliant program for copy/burn movies, i burnt that 3 hour LOTR-rotk movie onto a single dvd-r disc last night and playback on our set top dvd player was perfect, just like the original, even left the menus and titles on the movie.
as for dual layer copying, not all set top dvd players will play D/L discs, so i think its still too early to use D/L professionally at the moment, its still in its infancy, theres still lots of probs with (very expensive) media conflicts etc so my sony dru700a wont be doing any D/L work for a while.
anyway, i just thought id ask about this topic thats all.....thanks....GLEN

glen,
there is a lot more to alcohol then i think you realize, did you read the thread i posted above?? i wasn't really trying to say the alcohol would replace Shrink, i was just trying to emphasize how useful alcohol can be. also, alcohol is not just for copy on the fly, it has an extremly good image burning (to hard drive) capability which works great with its virtual drive function.
...now that i think about it, maybe i come off a bit too much like a salesman...

thx turkey.
no m8, you didnt at all, i still havent had a chance to check alcohol out properly yet, got a bit busy with my ethernet swith on my pc's to research it.
i wasnt sure if alcohol would do what shrink does by shrinking a large dvd movie and burn it (with nere) to a single dvd-r disc, cos if it doesnt do that, then ill just stick with shrink for movie burning, otherwise, if alcohol does do the movie shrinking and burning, and other stuff as well, then ill look at using it (the trial i mean) if it turns out ok, ill buy a propper copy.
im a professional videographer, and do video editing as part of that, i get to use some great programs, but im not interested in having more than 3 or 4 programs that i need to use to do my capturing/editing/burning etc.
i capture dv tapes (and old vhs) and create/burn my dvd projects using SONIC MyDVD.
i use arcsoft SHOWBIZ (companion with mydvd) to do basic editing b4 i send back to mydvd to creat my project to burn.
i use adobe premier 6.5 for top notch editing, but still use mydvd to capture, its better than premier for capturing for me.
i use Nero express 6 platinum for everyday dvd copying, and use shrink for burning dvd movies (so far)
now wants the best s/w to burn pc and ps2 game discs and i guess thats where alcohol comes in.
so given all this, ill def sit down soon and try it out, im just so busy with my work (grrrrrrrr)
got a kids party to film this arvo (gotta luv kids to do this kind of work) but the money is great.
anyway, thanks for your advice/help, its a top forum and untill last week i didnt know there were any forums/sites dedicated to this area of computing, so im an avid fan, except for reading some of the silly posts that u see in here from people who try to do all these wierd and wonderful things with video/audio etc, im absolutely amazed what some people really try to do.
anyway, keep up the good work...cheers....GLEN

Hi Glen,
When backing up PC games there are a few things to consider.
The first major consideration is if you have a burner that can write EFM correctly, or what's known as a "2-sheep" burner. These writers are vital to a successful backup of the newer protections. If you don't have a capable burner, no amount of software will make up for that. It's possible to back up the older protections with a "1-sheep" burner but that's not the case with the new protections. Unfortunately your DRU-700 isn't a 2-sheeper. Do you have a CD writer as well and if so what make/model is it?
In order to use Alcohol 120% effectively you need to know what type of protection you're dealing with. A-Ray Scanner is the best out there so here's a link:
http://www.aray-software.com/
I'd also highly suggest checking out BlindWrite5. I've had better success with it on the newer protections than I did with A120. BW5 has DL DVD burning support as well. If you do try BW5 be sure to get BW5 Tweaker at the link I gave above, it's a great little add on that allows more control over the ripping/burning process.

I got a question hopefully somebody will solve this for me.
I was on a FTP server the other day and i downloaded 3 games Splinter Cell Pandora Tomorrow, Thief 3 And Spider Man 2 i burnt spider man 2 straight onto a disc using the cue file. When i came to burning SCPT and Thief 3 there were 3 or 4 discs long but they didnt come with cue or bin files they came like this (ims-spta.001,ims-spta.002) all the way up to 55 that is the same for every disc. how do i burn these sort of files to a disc so that they work ??
Thank You Dean

It also comes with a SFV file whatever that it is. I used ultra ISO to try and convert the files into ISO's or BIN & CUES but still nothing

were the files you downloaded on a private server? if these are illegal copies then what you are attempting to do is piracy...
however, i'll give you the benefit of the dought here. these wierd files are compressed or encrypted and you need to batch extract them, which will result in a single file that may be .iso or something similar. put all the files in the same directory and then try extracting the .sfv file with WinRAR.

No benefit needed. The material is undoubtedly pirated.
BrickT8p,
We're not here to help people pirate material so I highly suggest reading the forum rules, especially #5, before posting again.
