Sony: PS4 lifecycle could be shorter than PS3 in some regions

article published on 1 December, 2013

PlayStation UK head Fergal Gara has implied that the PlayStation 4's lifecycle could be shorter than the PS3's was, at least in some markets. The PS3 launched in 2006 and Sony has stated they will support the system for at least a decade. Gara says (via CVG): "I think there's reason to believe that the next cycle might be shorter in markets such as the UK. It's probably a sign of the ... [ read the full article ]

...Agreed, but I think this decision will ultimately be driven by the potential for more profits. If it pads the bottom line, I see this being a likely outcome. Not to mention the fact the new gen consoles used quite a few "off the shelf" parts to lower development costs compared to the crazy cell processor of the PS3

Considering how far back a step in content the PS4 has compared to PS3. I think Like the Vita this will sell well out the gates and then as news travels the PS4 is heavily decontented....sales will drop through the floor. They will be forced to do something or will develop a way to fix that in some way. Be it a new console or a newly revamped PS4

Given that the specs are already ancient by PC standards and the trimmed-down "gaming" operating systems seem to be less efficient than Windows Vista, I certainly hope they release something new sooner...if Microsoft and Sony stick with these already outdated "next gen" consoles, it will hold back the entire gaming community.

So I guess what they're saying is the PS3 will only see 1 more years worth of titles. Good thing I didn't invest much in this round of console wars. For the PS2 I had around 150 games, PS1 probably more. Of which I could play them all on my PS3 ( 2nd model, still with the PS2 hardware). But my next move will not be to buy yet another console, especially if it won't play games from the previous generation. I think what I would like to see happen is one console/gaming PC that will emulate all the previous consoles combined. So far my little MPC does NES, SNES, PS1, Mame, TG16, SMS, Genesis, plus tons more well enough. Maybe by the time the SteamBox comes out PS1,2,3 and Xbox emulation will be well established.

Now this wouldn't take a lot of work. With Valve, who has the right idea already, make it easy to transfer licences and such to one unifying platform.

It was specifically stated by Sony and others that this set of "next-gen" consoles will likely be THEIR LAST.

The notion behind this is that sales for consoles dropped "sooo dramatically" that they aren't planning for other consoles.

Whatever! They say one thing and then do another.

All I know is PC RULES! Best graphics, longest tenure (past, present and future) and highest flexibility.

The Steambox "console" will efficiently murder both the Xbone and PS4, and IMO Sony and M$ see the writing on the wall. I'll happily dance on both their graves.

Should be longer since the gap in graphics is smaller these people have no idea what they are talking about. And the steam box is pointless since its not a custom windose box.

Copyright infringement is nothing more than civil disobedience to a bad set of laws. Lets renegotiate them.

Pardon? How does NOT being a "custom Windows box" (even though, erm, it actually is, just not with Windows installed) make it "pointless"? Neither the XBone or PS4, point of fact, are any more "custom Windows boxes" than the Steambox; ALL of them run a proprietary OS. Don't agree? Try running Excel on that XBone.

The difference? For the same money, the Steambox has better specs AND lets you change whatever you like, from graphics hardware to RAM to storage to even the OS (although a dual-boot is wise, if you care to keep the SteamOS functionality). In other words, it's a $500 Linux gaming box that you can install Windows on.

This may be the last gen of "high dollar" consoles, simply because you can now acquire better, cheaper performance by buying a $500 or so middle-range Windows gaming rig, or just buy a Steambox, and get more flexibility, to boot. That was not the case in the past; the PS3's Cell processor, for example, is a VERY good deal, considering that it normally costs ca. $2000 to acquire a Cell system (albeit twice as fast).

Sony/M$ will need to flip the paradigm back to what it was, where consoles could play games (and ONLY games) better than PCs that cost 2-4x as much, or their row will be increasingly tough to hoe.

Last I check its running lunix variant thus can not run all its library handicapping it from the start. Now if one could play most steam games on it then it would have some real muscle behind it. But as it is no fallout no elder scrolls no batman no AAA support makes it not worth the trouble.

It has to support everything out of the box with no customization in order to get anywhere other wise its just another over priced prefab desktop IMO.

Copyright infringement is nothing more than civil disobedience to a bad set of laws. Lets renegotiate them.

You can install ANY Linux or Windows you like, as well. Read more. Dual boot into SteamOS and Windows, and you can play Windows games natively.

Re: "Overpriced prefab desktop", you're way off base. You're NOT going to find significantly better hardware for less. WHen was the last time you built a competent gaming PC, including an OS, for $500? Certainly not on a Windows system...

As for "has to support everything out of the box with no customization", it already has more games set to be available at release than either the XBone or PS4, all of which will run at 1080p (or more) without the lag and stutter of either console. Having flexibility does not mean it has fewer options available. I don't see how the potential to support any (and all) extant PC hardware and software is a limitation.

The OS setup is too complicated for the average gamer, NEXT!

I can and have built better machines for the cost, NEXT!

Indie games don't sell much even less on a console, NEXT!

Like I said above flexibility is pointless if its not easy to use no one will spend 500$ just to install windose on it.

Sorry I just do not see the reason any normal zombie gamer would buy it they would be more happy with a drool box from Sony or M$ and PC gamers already have a PC and do not need it.

Much like the Ouya one is better off waiting till the 2nd generation to buy into it.

Writing "NEXT!" does not, in fact, prove your point.

- SteamOS is just the Steam "Big Picture" mode, as an OS. "Too complicated" how, exactly? Just because a more-advanced user CAN do something, does not mean all users have to.

- Sure you can possibly build better machines for (somewhat) lower cost. Those machines also do not come with the controller or SteamOS (or, in fact, ANY OS, beyond Linux, pretty much negating the whole "gaming rig" idea). Furthermore, those machines, just like the Steambox, probably have as good, or better, specs as the XBone (which also costs $500). Furthermore, weren't you just talking about

as your very first statement..? So BUILDING a PC is somehow easier?

Frankly, neither task is as difficult as you imply.

- Indie games sell just fine, actually, both on consoles and desktops. You REALLY need to look up the numbers; it's currently the fastest-growing section of the market, in fact. Furthermore, your claim of "lack of AAA support" pretty much contradicts what the AAA houses (besides EA) are saying.

Relax.

Sorry, insistence is not veracity; this isn't Fox News. If you cannot come up with an actual counterargument, that's your problem, not mine.

Maybe if you stamp your feet? Hold your breath..? I've told you before, I LIKE blue =) .

Industry numbers and developer statements back me up; it's quite easily researched by anyone with fingers and access to Google. Try it sometime.
