Hi andy1,
Considering you did not give us much information to work with, I can only hazard a few guesses:
- Overheating processor (overclocked?).
- Damaged/corrupted RAM or virtual memory.
- Corrupted or heavily fragmented drive.

its a brand new computer with a dvd burner it has 512 mb ddr ram , 160 gb, hard drive p4, xp.....anything else? i turned the fan off and it still doesn't work

First of all, do not turn the fan off, as overheating could still be an issue!
Does your computer restarts when you open a file or disc in DVD Shrink, as soon as you open DVD Shrink, or after you hit "Backup!" and DVD Shrink start processing the files?

If the computer restarts after the process, there's an options in DVDshrink "turn off after success" or something. Just unclick that box.

after i hit backup it will go for about 5 min then the computer will restart i'll let you know what happens it is on a different computer

You have the same problem i had a couple of days ago when i updated my memory.This is where AD comes in to its own as Praetor you may or may not know him suggested dropping my memory speed on my mob.Bingo everything was up and running perfect again.Try your memory setting on your mob to make sure they are as the should be.Also check the performance of the memory to make sure it is not running low when DVD Shrink is running.I have 1024mb 333mhz memory in my system but dropped the speed down a little and all went well again.

First there is a new version of DVD Shrink released today.
Go into the BIOS of the PC (Press Del or F1) when the PC is booting. Go through the options till you see the options to set the timings of the RAM - set this to SPD - this lets the RAM itself set the correct speed.
Get on the net and download Memtest http://www.memtest86.com/ and get the .ISO image. Grab a CD and burn the image in your burning software.
Reboot the PC with this CD in and set the PC to boot from CD - again in the BIOS.
Let Memtest run and see if it fails. If it Passes once and you have the time let it run for a few cycles - maybe if you can leave it chugging away for an hour or so and see if it fails on any of the tests.
Also if you built the PC yourself and it has more than one stick remove them and test them one at a time. Especially if it a dual ddr system as most modern P4's are - lots of RAM is fine on it's own or even in a normal pairing - but will fail when run in Dual DDR mode.

Yes.
1. This could be a virtual memory problem. Lets set your page file for video encoding. Control Panel >> System >> Advanced >> Preformance. Set the page file to 4000MB for both min and max. Then defrag your drive.
2. XP has a utility where you can monitor CPU and memfory usage real time. Ctrl-Alt-Del >> Task Manager >> Performance tab. Launch this prior to starting Shrink. Your CPU should be at a constant 100%, or close to this. If it starts to drop before the computer reboots, it is a sign of overheating.
If the virtual memory settings don't solve the problem, post what CPU value you have when rebooting.

OK if the speed of the RAM is fine and it Passed Memtest you can be almost, not totally, sure that the Memory and CPU are OK.
Once you have tried the Virtual Memory/Defrag option above, if it is still doing it.
I would try these, continuing the CPU overheating issue...Once again (I know it's a pain) go into the BIOS - look for a section called PC Health (Or similar) this will show Temperatures and Voltages. Look if the board supports something called Quiet Fan or Q Control or anything related to Fan speed and being quiet. This is a horrible technology - the idea is it slows the speed of the fan down when not under load - quiet PC - great, but the downside is "Hotter CPU" now on a lot of boards I have seen this the CPU runs within safety margins but a lot hotter than it should. Try disabling that - this will let the CPU cooler run at full speed all the time - P4 Heatsink/Fans aren't noisy anyway.
Also check the voltages on the PSU - specifically the +5v and +12v lines - there is usually a tolerance level on them - but if the +5v is below +4.5v ot the 12v is below 11.5v or they look erratic, that could be the issue - lack of power when the PC is under load.
Last but not least check for running processes - either hogging resources or even conflicting with DVD Shrink.
Look to the left of the clock on the desktop - bottom right and see if there a lot of little icons there.
Don't stop any of them - but let us know what they are - hover the mouse over them and it should say, some software will install so it runs in the background when you boot the PC - the idea being you can launch software quicker. things like Real Player, Quicktime, Microsoft Office to name three - Some of it isn't required and can, in some situations, cause all manner of problems.
