Hi,I keep my compression setting on automatic,I realize that some movies do not need compressing(under 4.7 gigs)So with that being said if my setting is on auto will it still compress when no compressing is needed? And if not what size will itbe for example anything under 2700 does not need compressing.Im asking this because I think Im compessing when I dont need to be.
My normal steps are as follows
compress with shrink
enable nero to burn
Thank you flip for the quick reply,so then if the file size in shrink shows me 3245mb how does that translate to gigs? Also I have noticed that sometimes deep analysis is greyed out and I compressed anyway.Thank you for that tip.Ill know next time.
On almost all modern computers, a byte is equal to 8 bits. Large amounts of memory are indicated in terms of kilobytes (1,024 bytes), megabytes (1,048,576 bytes), and gigabytes (1,073,741,824 bytes). Here is a URL for a byte calculator that will even do the math for you.

That 3245 MB is approximately 3.169 GB. That is well below the level that Shrink starts to compress. Compression is what the term implies, compressing. Unless the video file is larger than the capacity of the target (disc to be recorded to), there is no need for compression and none occurrs. So on auto, no compression will occurr until the video being recorded is over 4464 MB or about 4.36 GB.
You can compress without using deep analysis. However, deep analysis won't work unless you need to compress.
It is time you read the guide for DVD Shrink. They are located here at AD, at DVDShrink.info, Doom9.org and a number of other places. Hope you like the calculator, it will solve all your byte questions.
If you are backing up the whole DVD you can also change some of the menus to still pictures if they have a lot of animations and reduce the rest of the menus and extras to as low as the custom compression will go and then leave the movie at automatic. If you increaee compression manually in those two sections the movie willl decrease compression automatically.

Thanks for the short lesson in editing. With the guides, threads, and some experimentation, I'm sure everyone can learn even more. The original question concerned file size and when compression occurred, not how to use Shrink to edit.
However, here is a good spot to say a difference between version 3.2 and 3.1 is the ability to use still image under compression settings to eliminate the extras in full backup mode (inserts a still image to replace the file one wants to delete). In essence allowing one to edit and yet maintain full menu function. That isn't in the book yet, unless someone came out with a guide in the last couple of days. I got to check out the betas, so I know a little bit about the new program.
