I am looking to buy a new PS3, but I wanted to make sure it would be able to be modded. I saw in an older thread that someone suggested getting the old 120gb. Before going out and buying one, I just wanted to confirm that all PS3 120gb have the older firmware that can be modded to custom firmware v3.55. From reading other threads it looks like all newer versions like 160GB+ have the newer firmware.

Thanks for your help!
In order for your ps3 to be modded it has to be below firmware 3.56.
3.56 and beyond is unhackable for now.

Yes, that is what I understood from reading posts on this forum. I wanted to know whether PS3 120GB are all below firmware 3.56. It seems like the 120GB version is an older model no longer being produced, replaced by the 160GB version, but I still see some stores offering the 120 online.
Does anyone know if all versions of the PS3 120GB have firmware below 3.56? I just want to make sure before I buy.
They could be, but noone can guarantee they are. Only option is to order one and check when you get it. If it isnt 3.55 or below then you can return the ps3 under the excuse that you do not agree to the eula agreement. Some stores obviously wont like that excuse but it is well within your consumer rights considering that you are unable to read them until you buy the ps3, or read them online but then you need to find the link.
think your taking your chances on what the firmware will be.give it 1-6months the latest will probably be hacked anyway.the word impossible doesnt mean it can't be done just means people think it cant be done.

Ok, thanks to both of you for your replies. I ordered the 120GB on the chance it might work.
