The correct answer is yes and no, it depends on the firmware.
Firmware 3.55 or below can be hacked, though some games which require the latest firmware wont work, while others can be played if you are lucky they they didnt do things right.
Firmware 3.56 and above cannot be hacked at all atm.
Noone has come forward to say they are working on 3.60, but then now with the psn outage if anyone is working on it will now wait for 3.61 to be released and then work on that.
We wont know anything until probably a month after psn comes back on if a new cfw will be made by anyone, if they can get the new keys.
But there are plenty of pre3.56 games to keep you busy in the meantime. I hear second hand ps3s will be dirt cheap right now :P

Thank you both for the info!.
Will this CFW allow me to play burned games from a cd/dvd?
And what kind of discs can the PS3 play? (CD/DVD/Dual layer DVD.... etc)

well definitely not from a CD most games wont fit.
Some will fit on a DVD.
But many are much larger than 4gb.
Best to get an external usb drive and install on that. If you dont have an extra plug socket to plug the external drive then get a 2.5" portable drive those can be powered from the ps3's usb port.
Some games can only be run on internal hdd, so you may want to get a larger drive for your ps3 as well.
Here's an idea of how much space you may need. My 15 games took almost all of my 500GB hdd!

PS3MediaServer is the most awesome piece of Audio/video streaming software available for the PS3, it will stream basically everything.
As far as using CD's and DVD's for movies, natively the basic file format is DivX/XviD, for homebrew, you can install Showtime and it will read a wide variety of media, but not from disc's.

I doubt 2nd hand ps3's that are jailbreakable will be dirt cheap. People trading theirs in for 360's are people who played online, therefore, they probably are on 3.6. Any 2nd hand ps3 with 3.55 is pretty expensive, from what I've seen on ebay. I've even tried buying YLOD's and fixing hem, but they all end up being on 3.56 or higher. If you want to get into jailbreak, be prepared to spend a lot on a console that is still on 3.55. People selling them on ebay always start the ad with "these consoles are valluable and rare."

Ah right, well the ps3 does not support the most popular codecs cos sony did not want to pay for them.
Most people agree that multiman is the best thing to use as it has so many features and dean updates it very regularly. It also comes with Showtime as well now so that's an extra plus.
As for media, it supports all types I think, from CDs to DL Blurays.

So basicly if i go and buy a brand new ps3 i can expect it to be on 3.60 right? which currently and for the foreseeable has no CFW is that right?
And by the way if a ps3 gets bricked can i repair it myself? because i'm assuming sony wont agree to :)

Yes, you can only buy 3.6 PS3's. Do an ebay search for "3.55 PS3" to see what prices are out there.
Define brick. If the PS3 fails due to a hardware issue, like overheating, then it can most likely be fixed. If it's bricked due to a bad firmware installation, then you are probably screwed.

A bricked ps3, I think, can be fixed with a NAND flasher, but you have to solder it onto the ps3 so end sup more trouble than its worth, esp if you mess up the soldering.
