Hi, I just bought a PS3 with software 3.42
I just downloaded the firmware 3.55 and other files from: (How to intall custom firmware 3.55)
Do I need a USB mod chip to play games and movies from an external hard drive? I dont see any other instructions from the above link after install backup managers.

Are there any other guides that can show what to do after installing backup manager. How to play games and movie from harddrive?

just plug in the USB HDD with a folder gamez folder with a game it in and away you go

First: install the kmaew V3.55 CFW
Second: install multiman and LV2 Patcher
Third: Connect your external hdd (with your games), run multiman and find the games
Fourth: Done

first install OFW 3.55,then install kmeaws 3.55,if you install kmeaws first you risk bricking your system,and the new multiman already has the LV2 patch,
