Hi I have been modding xbox 360s for a few years now and played most of the games. A friend has a PS3 that he says has a knackered laser which he asked me to fix.
My question is there a way I could mod his PS3 to play games from an HDD without the need of a new laser or drive? In theory I know this should work but as ive never even played a PS3 i'm unsure as to the nature of the error function. For example if the PS3 senses a laser malfunction does it shut down the game booting altoghether regardless of whether its from HDD?
If so which would be the easiest and most cost effective?
Depending on the firmware of the PS3 (anything above 3.55) you'd need to downgrade, which you can only do by installing a chip, for example the E3 Flasher (for price in your currency use google). There are some consoles that can't be modded, later slims and superslims. Also some games won't load, because you need a game disc in the tray (any game disc) to load some games off the HDD and if the laser is dead the game disc won't get recognized.
Xbox 360: Slim untouched with a faked 320 GB harddrive for XBL, phat with LT 3.0, played Halo early, so going on live would be an instand ban, also with a faked 320 GB harddrive
PS3: Untouched 160 GB Slim, 60 GB Fat with latest Rogero and 160 GB internal harddrive.
PSVita: hardly ever play it
GameCube: Black with a Viper chip installed. With gameboy player. Trying to get a Wavebird controller.
Thanks mate. I will have a look at the firmware when he hands it over. After looking extensively on the web it seems some of the newer games will never work on any moddeyd system. Is this also correct?

nope as long as you keep up to date with CFW games will work, same as the xbox, I would say there's a one percent chance hes on 3.55 or lower, the ps3 will probably need a new laser maybe disc drive at the worse.

I got my PS3 60 GB off ebay with a "defective laser" about a month ago, wanted to trade in my PS3 slim at Gamestop for their preorder offer and originally wanted to copy it over so I did not lose my saves, when I got the PS3 60 GB it was on 3.15. The laser problem was that the previous owner seems to smoke and the console was filled with nicotine. I opened up the outer metall shell of the drive until I could see the laser lens and used a clean q-tip on it. Needless to say I did not copy my slim over to the 60 GB. I'd say with defective laser units chances are slightly higher that they are on 3.55 or below, because games didn't work on them any more, so no use in updating.
