I would suggest u get a portable usb hdd and back up ur current ps3 hdd from the menu. Then install the new one and restore it from the usb hdd. I'm not sure if u can do it ne other way. You could try to have 2 partitions on ur 500gb hdd but im not sure how the ps3 would handle that.

you can make a backup of it yes but if that is the only other hdd u have then i dnt think u cn restore the files to the same hdd. Basically u need 2 extra hdd's to accomplish this. One will be the new one ur going to install as the new ps3 hdd and the other will be the one with the backup files needed to restore the new ps3 hdd back to how u had it.

Here is a link to the world's simplist way to format any media to FAT32 (larger than 32GB partitions):

http://www.ridgecrop.demon.co.uk/index.htm?fat32format.htm

This awesome GUI will format whatever size of whatever storage media to FAT32 in just a matter of a click or two once the program is opened on your PC.

The PS3 console's own Backup Utility can be used on a USB thumb-drive, USB external Hard Drive (HDD) or just about whatever you can connect to your console. The only requirement is your storage media be formatted to FAT32 & be large enough to hold whatever you have on your console's HDD.

If the storage media you have available is smaller than your PS3's internal HDD then all you can do is delete anything you can re-download at another time. For example Game Data & PSN items (assuming you can return online to the PSN Store).
