hello all i am new to the forum but i am having some issues with my 60gb cecha01 ps3 my question is i wanna do a fan mod but i dont wanna deal with resistors my question is could i buy a fan from a 40gb ps3 and use it on my 60gig model wired to a pot to control fan speeds? i tried this mod on a 80gb ps3 and i could not slow fan down even with pot 12v no matter what position the pot was in, my buddy told me i might need to up the resistance i didnt wanna deal with that but i did however successfully fan mod a 40gb ps3 with pot so i thought the fans in those models might not need as much resistance

1st gen ps3s have the 19 blade fan(some don't) usually its the 15 blade fan that makes the noise check how many blades it has and just replace it to an 19 blade fan(they both do the work fine getting hot air out its just the 19 blades has better bearings thus less noise)
after 1st gen FAT PS3s came with 15 blades most of FAT PS3s can use them both and usually most of the heat comes from the PSU so if you come across the metal PSU in a FAT PS3 its the one usually making most of the heat due to having metal casing check if its APS-226 or APS-231
as for resistors you can try and calculate the needed resistance using ohm law
you can also try using SPDT(single pole double throw switch)
main volt > COM
L1 <resistor bridge> L2
Fan POSS either L1 or L2
Fan NEG stay where it is
this way it should be 2 speed switch correct me if im wrong lol i used to do these kind of switches on 360 but that one used power from other place no resistor
BTW resistors tend to heat up ALOT depending on what wattage resistor you use
hope this helps lol i tend to ramble on n on sometimes(getting to old) another thing check for the thermal paste on the fan base sometimes this one fixes the loudness :D

lol it helped i just checked my fan for my 60gb ps3, it has 15 blades. The problem is when i do 12v fan mod it sounds like a jumbo jet, so i was trying to think of a way to slow down the fan but speed it up faster than factory. Since i used to have a 40gb ps3 that i successfully modded the fans with a potentiometer i thought i could do it here too, but when i wired it all up the fans were running at hi speed even with a potentiometer (basically i could not slow the fan down), my buddy told me i might need more resistance. I didnt wanna deal with resistors for the reason you said they can get real hot, thats why i was thinking if i put a 40gb fan in and just wired the pot to it with no resistors. I know different ps3 fans need different resistance, the 40gb fan might not need as much resistance as the 60gb since when i wired it i didnt even use resistors. So i was asking if the fan would just plug in my 60gb no problems, or having fan compatibility problems with operating system and install it in my 60gb ps3 and be done with it. People are telling me i should not even do fan mods but i know first hand experience my 40gb ps3 had YLOD when i got it, i repaired it and did the fan mod with pot, it has been running for almost 2 yrs it even out lived a ps3 slim my buddy got so i know it works pretty good for YLOD prevention

when you mod it you giving it all power so it sounds like a jet what you should do is either give the fan 2 voltages in a toggle or just get a pc fan controller(12v PWM via voltage regulator)
you could also do what i used to do in my pc for fans molex connector on pc gives both 5v and 12v connecting from 12v to 5v will give you 7-5v
molex 1 yellow 2 black 3 black 4 red
1+2=12v 1+4=7-5v
im not sure PS3 PSU can handle that kind of use lol(will probably blow up or something)
this is the kind of mods i used to do on 360

i guess its just a trial and error type of thing huh? what happened was i sold my 40gb ps3 cause i wanted a backwards compatible one to play my ps2 games too and wound up purchasing a YLOD 80gb ceche01 ps3 i repaired the YLOD and tried to do the fan mod but was having problems getting the fan going when i turned it on and it overheated again and YLODd again and i couldnt fix it so i cut my loses parted it out and bought a working MOBO/blu ray board and ordered the rest of the parts and im kinda building (parting together) a 60gb ps3 cecha01 and honestly with all the money i spent on parts i could have just bought a ps2 and incorporated that into my entertainment area lol im just trying to figure a way i can control fan speeds myself without using resistors like i had on my 40gb which i probably would have just kept if i knew i would have to go through crap like this lol ):S

i checked around you need 250k ohm linear potentiometer get cable from the fan and get power from the PSU on the 3.3v rail like this

ok so i HAD to check it i have this dead FAT C04 so its gray cable from fan to potentiometer 3.3v cable from PSU(splice it with another cable) and connect it to potentiometer
fan cable to L1 or L2 and 3.3v to COM(middle) 3.3v should be the 1st left cable on the PSU(check multimeter to be sure)

damn i just ordered a 200k thinking that would be enough lol thanks for the info, i have been looking for about 2 weeks for that kind of info but all i could find was info on 40gb with 100k pot so you saved me alot of headache :)

i used a 100k ohm linear pot from Radioshack since it didnt work i just wired the fan to run at 12v all the time which is proving what i thought (like a jet) while im trying to find a pot i can use which is why i ordered the 200k then i saw your reply for 250k which i also found and ordered. i guess i can try see which one works better im just afraid of damaging or frying the system, ps3 seem to be more temperamental then 360s and trying these mods ive gone through like 4 and since i have alot of money in this one i really dont wanna lose it. but with this mod i shouldnt have much to worry about right? just make sure all connections are covered with electrical tape so it cant short out on anything metal right? trial and error. also yes im sure it has its matching blu ray board cause its reading games and disks perfectly

tinning both wires and using heat shrink does the job well ^__^ also make sure you extend the wires just use floppy(40 connectors)wire they thick enough(AWG28-30) NEVER EVER use tape without some solder for permanent connections PS3 is build like a tank it has ground covering on most of steel/tin plates 3.3v wont damage it much but you cant be too careful its the amps on the rails that kill

you wont damage the system but you WILL fry the pot(literally) once i had 4 pots of 100k wired in pairs not only did they heat up the middle plate of the pot heated up(became red) they all died in a puff of smoke :D

Since speed of PS3 fan is controlled by pwm-pulse (power width modulation) on fan connector pin 3 (Pin 1 is +12 and Pin 2 is GND) I would recommend this method http://killerbug.net/PS3_E-Z_CHILL_ECDIY_ASSEMBLY.html
I personally have built and installed several of these speed controllers. Parts cost per unit is less than $10

Hi there. I was just wondering to add a potentiometer, what kind of wire should i use to connect the grey wire to the potentiometer, and what kind of wire i should use to connect the power supply wire to the potentiometer. Please help! My ps3 keeps over heating, and i would really like to use it gain so i would like to know what wire i need as soon as possible so i can do the mod. Please help!
