PS3 fan not working

I broke the fan connector off of my board and the solder points on the other side are not salvageable (broke off the power one by accident). I tried connecting the fan to a usb cord (brown to red, black to black), but it only worked for a second before turning off. I also tried it on a 12v DC adapter that I had used for a pc fan before. The only thing that that accomplished was the fan lasting for a few seconds longer before shutting off. I have seen videos on youtube of older model ps3 fans being connected to USB the same way I had it, but their's worked. It might just be the fact that it is a newer model fan, but I need a way for it to work and it would really be great if there were some way that I could plug it into a 8.5v adapter and have it work with only power and ground, but that seems like it is not the case. Any answers and any solutions are greatly appreciated!

Also, a solution that I think might work is if anyone knows if I can somehow stuff an older ps3 fan into my slim?
