I reflowed a friends 60 gb backwards compat ps3 after he got ylod. I used a heat gun and flux and reflowed following directions. After reflow system starts, sound and video works perfectly. However when I attempt to play a game or alter any system settings the ps3 just sits and thinks FOREVER. if I attempt to launch a game that was on the hdd the system just hangs at the black screen. I have reflowed the board again and that did not fix the problem. Has anyone else experienced this issue or know of a fix? I have been crawling through message boards for days with no answer!
nice vid, negative on the propane blowtorch though. I am using a multi setting heat gun, currently I have reflowed the board twice, after the second reflow and system restore (from the restore console) I can now change settings without the system hanging, however when I attempt to play a game or demo *blob freshly downloaded from psn) the system goes to the black screen, flickers as the hdmi handshake is re-authenticated then nothing, I have to manually reset the ps3 via the power switch on the rear of the console.
I am not a noob, I have just never experinced this issue before and this friend has helped me out alot in the past. Ps3 was reflowed at 543 F, for roughly 30 seconds for cpu and gpu. After 45 minute cooling period flipped board and repeated, again allowed for 45 minutes of cooling time. Board was set level *using a carpenters bubble level to verify* when on each side and left. Does anyone have any idea why this occuring or a fix?
Have you tried wiping the hard disk using a PC yet? System restore, format, and those other Sony tools don't do what they claim to do, so problems often persist after using them. I have tried all the options, even in recovery mode...the PS3 will not format the hard disk unless you remove the drive and format the whole thing to some other format first. Typical Sony.
Oven reflow is a good option for YLOD fixes, but it does not sound like a reflow issue.
Resolved: Turned out that the brackets over the cell cpu were two tight. I simply lossened them a quarter turn at a time untill the system came back. Realized this was the possible problem while fixing a x clamp 360. The 360 was red ringing because the brackets had been super tightened. At that moment the light bulb went off and I began working on the ps3, had it fixed within 15 minutes. Never have seen this listed as an issue in my research. Thought it would be an excellent fact to share.

Wow...they must have been insanely tight; I shaved the raised edges off of my RSX heatsink and added washers; making the screws about 3MM tighter than the stops would have allowed, and I still never had anything like that happen.
Maybe this has something to do with you heatgun'ing the back of the board...maybe you did manage to melt the solder just a little, causing the RSX to be pulled a little bit away from the board by gravity.
negative, I believe that it might have been due to the age of the console. Doing the same on a separate original 60 gig that was not displaying video produced the exact same result. I was only tightening the screws to *snug.
Perhaps due to another repair and the person super tightened them and when it ylod the chip was forced into the board but I digress,
Now if I could simply understand why the hdmi does not work (event after full system reset via recovery) but component does. The owner sold me the system for 20 bucks because of all the problems he was experiencing, ylod, blue ray issue (cable) power issue (another cable lol). It now lives under my workbench and when I become too frustrated with a repair I get the ps3 and start tinkering. lol.
