Okay so I was one of the dummies that installed every update...I was like, "Oh no! my blu-rays won't work?!" And now of course I'm regretting it. Thinking there would never be a way to downgrade, I then proceeded to install every other update and am now currently at 3.61 or 3.62...whichever one was after PSN came back online. Anyways, I've been searching for a way to downgrade my system without waiting forever and stumbled upon a guy who says he can do, and has done, it. He said he just downgraded a PS3 from 3.62 to 3.30 last week. Okay, nice to hear but I'm very skeptical...like I'm gonna trust this guy to touch my baby and trust I'll get it back as anything more than a brick! So I asked him for more info...something I could come to you guys with in hopes of resolving any questions involving the legitimacy of his methods. He tells me that the hard drive in a PS3 is a laptop hard drive and all he has to do is find the system core and wipe it -- then he can downgrade to the desired 3.55 so I can install cfw 3.55 (he doesn't even know what cfw stands for!). So I'm asking all of you with some tech savvy to share your thoughts in hopes that they will 1)ease my mind so I can go ahead with the process or 2)assure me that this guy is a douche and shouldn't be trusted. Thanks to the best tech community online in advance!

Your friend is an idiot and is telling you lies, there is no current jailbreak or downgrade, for anything above 3.55.

Simple reason why that can't work:
The PS3 firmware isn't saved on the harddrive.

Xbox 360: Slim untouched with a faked 320 GB harddrive for XBL, phat with LT 3.0, played Halo early, so going on live would be an instand ban, also with a faked 320 GB harddrive
PS3: Untouched 160 GB Slim, 60 GB Fat with latest Rogero and 160 GB internal harddrive.
PSVita: hardly ever play it
GameCube: Black with a Viper chip installed. With gameboy player. Trying to get a Wavebird controller.

A lot of months ago, when jailbreaking was very young, I found this somewhere around the net. I dont even remember the site. I did not trust what I read but I copied it and saved it in a txt file just from curiosity. It claims to be a downgrade method. Obviously it is NOT WORKING. I just post it... I had completely forgotten about this finding. I remembered it after reading your post.

WARNING! IT IS NOT TESTED! I CANT TELL IF IT WAS POSTED FROM A TRUSTED AUTHOR. I POST IT JUST FOR GENERAL INFORMATION

Ok im going to tell you all how to downgrade your PS3 firmware..

YOU NEED....
USB 2.0 IDE/SATA Connector
x2 USB flash drives
Firmware download (http://downloads.exophase.com/685/ps3-firmware-341)
Playstation OS download (http://us.playstation.com/support/systemupdates/ps3/pc_update/index.htm)
Windows Machine

So first off you will need to follow playstation OS instructions

Create a folder on the storage media in which to save the update data. Using a PC, create a folder named ?PS3? on the storage media or USB device. Within the PS3 folder, create a folder named ?UPDATE?.Be sure to save the update data as noted below. If the data is not saved in the correct way, the PS3? system will not recognize the update data. The folder name must be in all uppercase letters.
Location: Save in the ?PS3? folder > ?UPDATE? folder
File name: Save as file name ?PS3UPDAT.PUP?.

Then on another USB

Save the update data to a USB mass storage device
general, the storage media must have at least 120 MB or more of free space.
Save the data to the following location on the storage media. Using a computer, create a folder named "PS3" on the storage media. Within the "PS3" folder, create a folder named "UPDATE". Save the update data in the "UPDATE" folder.
Be sure to save the update data as noted below. If the data is not saved in the correct way, the PlayStation will not recognize the update data. The folder name must be in all uppercase letters.
Location: Save in the "PS3" folder > "UPDATE" folder
File name: Save as file name "PS3UPDAT.PUP"

Then remove PS3 hdd heres the removal instructions (http://us.playstation.com/support/answer/index.htm?a_id=362)

Then you will need to reformat hdd. (http://www.ehow.com/how_6026_format-hard-drive.html)

Then remove the CMOS battery and leave it out for about 10-20 minutes to be on the safe side, and then reinstall.
you will have to open PS3 right up to get at it and note !!! THIS WILL VOID YOUR WARRANTY !!!

Then reinstall HDD in to PS3

Then install OS.

Do not turn off the PS3? system or remove the storage media or USB device during an update. If an update is cancelled before completion, the system software may become damaged, and the system may require servicing or exchange.
During an update, the power button on the system front and PS button of the controller are inactive.
Insert the USB device that contains the update data in the PS3? system.
From the home menu, select (Settings) > (System Update), and then press the button.
Select [Update via Storage Media] The system automatically searches for and finds the update data saved on the storage media or USB device.Start the update. Press the button to start the update. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the update.
Confirm that the update was successful.
After the update has been completed, go to (Settings) > (System Settings) > [System Information].
If the [System Software] field displays the version number of the update, the update was successful.
Hint

Then install firmware.

Turn on your PlayStation 3 console and insert the storage media.
From the XrossMediaBar, head over to Settings and finally to System Update. Press X on your controller to move to the next step.
Select Update via Storage Media and the system will search the drive for the PUP file.
Follow the on screen instructions to begin the update. When the update is done, your PS3 will reboot and when you come back, confirm you have the firmware update. Head to Settings, then System Settings and finally System Information. If the number showing matches the update you downloaded at the beginning of the guide, then the update was successful

You can delete the update data from the USB devices after the update has been successfully completed.

When I first read this tutorial (months ago) I was wondering if it could work. But nothing similar was posted from a trusted site/forum :(

lets be honest, that would be the holy grail of ps3 hacking if it was that easy. even xbox 1 hacking was more difficult than that, so ps3 hacking.... naaaaa, don't expect it to be that easy. but how can you even believe someone who doesn't now what cfw is?

all the answers are given before, the firmware isn't stored (all the way) on the hdd, some is in the nand. and off course the real answer, the guy is an idiot/douche and should be hanged.
no cfw possible from 3.56 on, and no downgrading of the 3.56 fw and onwards.
btw. downgrading via the service menu isn't a good idea either, unless you want to get stuck there.
so you are stuck on playing original games only, and no cfw for you
