Simple answer is yes. I like that tutorial. Just follow the steps exactly as it says and make sure you download all the files you need before you start the modding process. Good Luck and have fun!

If you run into any problems feel free to ask for help. Let me know how it all turns out. The kmeaw firmware is by far the most stable out I think. Once you get that installed download multiman or whatever manager you prefer and make sure to get the one that is made for custom firmware. Also, download a file called BDEMU2-355. Just google it. That way you wont have to patch your blu ray drive every time you boot your system. With that file patch it once and its done for good. The 355 is the version which is firmware version 3.55. One more thing to remember is you will need to keep an original game disc in the drive at all times to play games from the hard drive and if you google it there is a list of games that can run from usb and a list for games that run from internal drive along with if they work with game updates.

Depends. Which model PS3 do you have? Only the 20 GB (rare!) and the 60 GB models supported PS2 games in the first place, as far as I know these models also support PS2 backups (correct me if I am wrong, please). These two models also have 4 USB ports and the card reader. The later 40 GB and 80 GB models didn't support PS2 games at all. These two models only had two USB ports each and no card reader.
Xbox 360: Slim untouched with a faked 320 GB harddrive for XBL, phat with LT 3.0, played Halo early, so going on live would be an instand ban, also with a faked 320 GB harddrive
PS3: Untouched 160 GB Slim, 60 GB Fat with latest Rogero and 160 GB internal harddrive.
PSVita: hardly ever play it
GameCube: Black with a Viper chip installed. With gameboy player. Trying to get a Wavebird controller.
