Strange PS3 Disc Read Problem

I started getting disc read errors while playing games and bluray movies. Eventually, and suddenly, my PS3 stopped recognizing all discs. CDs/DVDs/Blurays.

I did the system menu/rebuild index fix. No luck.

I took my PS3 (MGS4 Bundle 80GB Fat) apart and looked at the drive - a two laser drive. Odd that it stopped reading all discs all of a sudden. Yet since it had been giving read errors I assumed it was the drive.

I was going to buy a new laser assembly but opted to get a whole new bluray drive for $60. I just got the replacement and my PS3 is having the same error. I put a disc in and the little disc icon in the upper right spins but nothing happens - with any disc.

I'm at a loss. If it isn't the drive, what could it be? Otherwise my PS3 works fine.

This really is quite frustrating!

Have You checked the controller board on the drive it may be goin out or be corrupted i had the same issue and remarried the drive and it fixed the problem

Yeah, that's why I replaced the entire drive. :/

I'm thinking either the ribbon (is that possible)

or something on the PS3 mainboard (yuck.)

Anything else it could be?
