If your defrag couldn't finish, your drive probably doesn't have enough room for defrag to work in.
Check your drive for the amount of unused space. 15% is the minimum required by Microsoft defrag but sometimes more is needed when you have a lot of large files. Delete a lot of stuff you don't need or get a larger drive.....

dumping avast is a good way to speed things up,it scans fk'n everything even on startup, even worse when surfing it's great for noobs, basicly i dump as many programs from bloat like avast, adobe & others for lite versions like clamwin anitvirus & sumatra pdf, unimportant software is removed from "start with windows" msconfig comes in handy in that respect, yeah anyway best to make sure no virus or walware present first so get log posted for 2old & what specs are laptop i.e dual core,4gb ram etc

It sounds like the malware has messed up some of the system files and you may be looking at a reformat/reinstall of windows.

SUPERAntiSpyware has a portable version that will run from a Thumb drive and will sometimes work but, if the Systemfiles have been corrupted, it may not.

First, try going to Safe Mode with networking and see if you can run HJT and post a copy of the Log from there..

hi mate ,i wasn`t sure what you were getting at but i do now , cos i was looking for a way to save the log but it wouldn`t let me it kept saying that the log file didn`t exist and do you want to create a new one ,,also when i run hijack scan a widow pops up saying >>>>

for some reason your system denied write access to the host file, hijackthis may not be able to fix this..

so i ran the laptop in safe mode and then done the scan and it worked perfect , so now i know something isn`t right and ive been ignoring it the last two weeks cos antimalware bytes was coming up negative ,after i scanned i saved the log and went back to normal mode and done another scan and again up popped this window>>>

for some reason your system denied write access to the host file etc.......

but it did save the log file this time ,so maybe when i done it in safe mode it created the log file in the program files for it to be saved to any how ill post the two logs now ,sfe mode and normal mode

These entries have been positively identified as malicious programs.
Reboot your computer into safe mode. by tapping F8 while booting.
Run HijackThis again, and place a check mark next to the following entries.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = local;*.local

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {91C18ED5-5E1C-4AE5-A148-A861DE8C8E16} - (no file)

The following are Not dangerous, but unnecessary. It is suggested that you place a check mark next to the following entries, as these programs may be taking up system resources and slowing you down. Removing these will Not remove the program and it will still be available when needed. It will simply keep the program from starting and running all the time and free up some system resources.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickSet] C:\Program Files\Dell\QuickSet\QuickSet.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Adobe Reader Speed Launcher] \"C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 9.0\Reader\Reader_sl.exe\"

Press the "Fix checked" button. Then close HijackThis.

Go to Control Panel -> Programs and Features (or whatever it?s called in Vista) and uninstall Ask Toolbar or Ask.com Toolbar or Nero Toolbar all that you find.

Go to C:\Program Files\Ask.com and delete the folder ?Ask.com?

Reboot ? that will get you started and as soon as we can get rid of the Malware we?ll work on getting your drive cleaned up.

When you get back from your trip and get to it, I?ll be here.

Hey,

Glad to see you?ve returned from your trip in good shape. It?s about my beddy bye time here so, if you?ll do the following for me, I?ll look over the logs when I?ve had a little rest and we?ll see if we can get you fixed up. Remember, from what I?ve seen so far, it may take a little time so don?t get discourged?.

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
? At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
? If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
? Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
? When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
? Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected. <-- Don't forget this.
? When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be found here: C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt

? Please post the MBAM Log and a fresh HJT log in your next reply and let me know what symptoms you have and what it?s acting like?.

ok bud i already had malwarebytes and always scanned with it once a week but i always had the latest version but a while back something happened and i resorted back to an earlier version, so i clicked on malwarebytes and went to updates,,and i checked for updates but it kept failing so i just done a full scan and when it got to 3 hours and 189,000 files scanned i aborted cos its never took that long before to do a scan maybe 2 and half hours max so i uninstalled it and am going to download the latest version but i feel cos the computer is running a bit slow that the scan is too so ill report back

Run HijackThis again, and place a check mark next to the following entries.

O3 - Toolbar: Nero Toolbar - {D4027C7F-154A-4066-A1AD-4243D8127440} - C:\Program Files\Ask.com\GenericAskToolbar.dll

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QTTask.exe" ?atboottime

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickSet] C:\Program Files\Dell\QuickSet\QuickSet.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [iTunesHelper] "C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe"

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IgfxTray] C:\Windows\system32\igfxtray.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HotKeysCmds] C:\Windows\system32\hkcmd.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Google Desktop Search] "C:\Program Files\Google\Google Desktop Search\GoogleDesktop.exe" /startup

From the HJT Log: you haven't done these steps yet. Please do all the steps to remove the items I have listed and then maybe we can carry on.

Remember I don't have a crystal ball and must depend on you to perform the cleanup steps and show me the Logs in order for me to help you.

2 Programs I use are ccleaner and diskeeper professional.

My Pc is never slow.

Ccleaner cleans temp files ect and Diskeeper will auto defrag your pc and you never have to do it again.

Diskeeper is geared for servers & is unnecessary for desk or laptops, ultradefrag or auslogics would've been a better choice both are free,i've also fallen into the trap of buying software that later i found out could be done for free & have a much lighter foot print, however the OP's issue is infection not overbloat it would seem
