Hi guys , I purchased a broken PS3 Slim, for about £10 . It immediately shuts down , it's definately a motherboard fault , as I have stripped it down and found physical damage
I found a several solder points on the board that could be potentiallly missising components . There are two numbers on the board , perhaps this could identify the board revision and/or type : SUR -001 & 1-881-945-11
Here's a picture of the Mobo , I have put 1 red circle where I know there's definately damage and 4 Blue circles where there I think there may be damage
If anyone has a matching motherboard , with close up images it would help to see what's missing .
Red Circle First I will start off with what is obvious , I am pretty certain there is a boken off capacitor as I found a bit of it and there is clear damage , see pictures
2.The Other four Blue circled solder points , is there something missing in these ?
Now I know the chances are there are bits broken on this Mobo . Apparently the PS3 had been thrown on the floor , hence the low price . It had also been taken to a repair store, who had quoted the original owner a price that costs more than a replacement
Anyway I got it as a project , as I am currently studying electronics . I got the spare time to fix it and I can solder well enough
hi, i can tell you 100% that the component that has broken off is a can type capacitor exactly the same as the blue one next to the damaged pads. i can also tell you that the other points circled are actually supposed to be like that (yeah i cant believe it either but i have seen pics and they are the same). having said that i dont know how a single component could be lifted from the board like that especially from dropping. now you mentioned that there were bits of it inside - this points to the possiblity that the cap was overloaded and that points to either a severe fault on the motherboard or a really faulty power supply. i would be very surprised if just replacing this cap would fix it - in fact i would expect it to blow the new one apart if it is a psu fault or motherboard short somewhere. also check smd fuses as if it is a fault it would almost certainly have blown one. your problem now is identifying which part of the circuit the cap is connected to and figure out why it blew/fell off. good luck.
