Can't get PS3 to display on 42" HD Monitor.

I have 3 Tatung 42" LCD monitors. They will display 1980 X 1200 and have a DVI and VGA ports only. If I connect my HD Directv receiver with an HDMI to DVI cable it comes up and works great at 1920 X 1080 resolution. When I connect my PS3 with the same cable I get no picture. The monitor recognizes the input as the display is 1920 X 1080 and there is no message about no connection or anything. The screen turns whitish from the brightness but there is no image displayed. I have tried the reset method of holding the on button until the 2 beeps. The display again goes to the whitish image but no display. It does change the resolution to 640 X 350 so I know that it sees the monitor but it will not display. These monitors are older but way too expensive to throw away. Any ideas would be of great help.
