I'm working on connecting my PS3 slim to my laptop to stream movies. I had my tabletop computer working in that capacity but through my router so 720P movies pixilated. I'm trying to connect my laptop directly to the PS3 through the ethernet port but it is not seeing my laptop/media server. I ran a CAT6 cable from my laptop's RJ-45 Ethernet LAN port to the ethernet port on the PS3 but it's not working.
Any thoughts?
By the way I'm using an open source media server that kicks butt and is designed specifically for Sony, it's called serviio, works like a charm.
Anyways I'm trying to get this figured out so I dont have to involve a router. I'm going on vacation and it would be great if I could figure out how to make this work so I could set up movies for the kiddos in the hotel room.
You might need a cross over cable though I doubt it.
You would have to set a static address in both the laptop and the PS3. Make one 192.168.1.1 and the other 192.168.1.2.. I like to make the gateway for each device, the IP of the other device.. Just cause..
Also, I've run 1080p through 2 routers (1 acting as a switch) with no issue. Your "kick ass" media server might not be all that kick ass. I use Tversity (also free).. Turn trans-coding off.

Also, the Ps3 only likes certain file types. mkv is not one of them. So your pixel problem might be transcoding not working so well... I also use "mkvtovob" (free) to convert the mkv to an mpg the PS3 likes, natively..
For reals? Your 1080P content streamed through media server via 2 routers and zero problems? Wow.
I dont think I want to mess with the whole IP address thing, I have a difficult time with that whole thing any time I mess with IP Addresses and internet connection settings I get a mess to deal with and I dont understand it well enough to get around without completely messing things up.
I had read that pixilating while streaming is often the fault of cheap routers, apparently they are the weak links. I have Verizon Fios and I'm not too confident in their router, they seem to spend just enough on hardware to make it work and nothing more.
I appreciate the response and I'll have to look into the mkvtovob program.
Is there a site that explains "IP Addresses for dummies" so maybe I could finally understand it?
